IHE HOSIA mutant monster rises out of Seoul's Han river hell-bent on devouring all that stands in its way in this favorite from

last year's Fantastic Fest. "THE H05T is a movie that provides something of everything from suspense to tenor, fiom

drama to a little touch of comedy, this fllm has it all. What's more surprising is that it delivers all of them very well

and provides great entertainment 0n the way. The opening of the fllm is perhaps one of the strongest l've seen.

turning the battle 0fThermopylae into one ofthe most anti(ipated movies ofthe year. lfthe film finds its audience,

we (an expe(t to see Snyder's adaptation of graphic novel THE WAT(HMEN in 2008.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA IURTLESHumankind's only hope against a disgruntled tech-industrialist's plan for world domination rests with a team ofninja-trained turtles who live in the sewen of Manhattan: leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael. 8ut firstthey have to get over the humiliation they suffered at the hands of their arch nemesis - a defeat whi(h caused the

Turtles to grow apart. Though this installment is (Gl, the film is a sequel to the first two back in the glory days ofthe

early'90s, and director Kevin Munroe promises more action than the four shellshotkers have evet brought before.

SUNSHINEA team of eight astronauts is sent to re-ignite a part of the dying sun. Seven years ago, another crew was dispatched

on the same mission, but they were never heard from again. Danny Boyle follows up 28 DAYS LATER with his second

foray into the srience fiction genre. We're primed for his vision (the film's set 50 years in the future) and the social

commentary that gave his beloved zombie opus mu(h of its heft. The international cast including Michelle Yeoh and

Cillian Murphy means worldwide appeal, and rumor has it things get reaaal freaky.

MEEI THE ROBINSONSA boy genius named Lewis has his latest invention, a "memory scanner," stolen by the nefarious Bowler Hat Guy.

Just when he's given up hope he'll ever retrieve his creation, he meets Wilbur Robinson, a curious young fellow fiomthe future, who invites him to travel forward in time to meet his e((entri( extended family (who really need Lewis!

help), hunt down the thief, and perhaps learn a se(ret or two about his own past. With everything from dinosaurs to

rocketships, many are saying this is going t0 be the best animated family film since THE lN(REDlBtES.

From its J0hn Lennon-approved, nearly fanatical following in the'70s duling midnight streenings

to its vari0us bootlegged in(arnations and forever-announted, never-materialized sequels (at one

point staning Marilyn Manson), Alejandro Jodorowsky's EL T0P0 remains an enduring cult-film ex'

perience. EL T0P0 opens with a passage that (ould be an existential ioutney for one's soul or a spooi

of a Sergio leone spaghetti Western: The bearded, leather-clad gunfighter El Topo (Jodorowsky him-

self) and his young son (Brontis Jodorowsky) ride through the desert and into a hamlet of bloodill

decimated people and animals. From then on, it's a winding, spiraling toad of evil bandits, mystical

foes and whip-cratking dykes, spiked with indelible, inexplicable imagery. "l am Godi'El Topo at

one point intones, and Jodorowsky completely means it: Playing deity in front of and behind the

camera, the director uses film as a direct pipe into his own mind, and the bursting valise of ideas.

stumbles onto a town run entirely on farts where latterday gladiators compete inside a huge dutch oven known,

as "Thundeldome'i The movie also stars Tina Turnel as the singing mayor of Baftertown who sends our helo into

the arena against the formidable Master/Blaster, the baddest symbiotic-two-person-bullying-entity-composed-

of-one-mildly-retarded-guy-and-one-evil-genius since Bush/(heney. See Mel in all his pre-anti-semiti( pro-

(hristian glory as he plays father figure to a group oforphaned children whose worldview is infotmed by the Who's

It's tough being an Eddie Murphy fan nowadays. Moviegoers quirkly fotget how funny someone used to be when all they

do is make the same sequels every summer. The Eddie Murphy of today is often a complete stranger, with only very small

glimpses of his former manic self peeking through the big-budget artifrce. Think about what's funnier - Eddie Murphy

in his fantastic live concert frlms or NUTTY PR0FESS0R 2? This movi€ opens with a (ute sequence with Eddie as a young

boy, entertaining and eventually shocking his family with some decidedly nasty jokes. I ncidentally, this sequence features

SamuelL.JacksonasEddie'sunde! Whatfollowsis90minutesofsomeoftheharshestandstrongeststand-upyou'll

ever see. Eddie rovers his favorite topics - sex, money and women. While many claim that his over-the-top views mask

some misogynistic or sexist views, I rhoose to see it as a performer playing a role. At this point in hh career, Eddie just

had his audience wrapped around his finger, and this guy knows how to work a room. While lots of comedians rely on

extreme profanity to just shock people, fddie used his mouth as a comedi< weapon. His skills as an impersonator are

equally impresive. Try to watch his takes on Richard Pryor and Bill (osby and not crack a smile. And as always, some of

To us, Joe Dante is one of the most distinctive and subversive voices in mainstream

This is a completely insane Ftench crime-sex film with a gorgeous high contrast visual aestheti( and a

jumbled plot that exists for no other reason than to propel the viewet from one unsavory scene of sex ot

violence to another. A Rosetta Stone ofsleaze that l'm still trying to decipher. lt seems to be about a drug

and prostitution ring that puts a (ontrad out on its rivals. But the film was te-edited by the American

dhtributor to eliminate any time-wasting scenes of plot exposition 50 it's often hard to determine who

that naked woman is or why those junkies are beating that guy up. No complaints though. This movie is

like a cluster bomb of sex, violence and pure mid-60s Eutopean (ool. I teally can't tompare this to any other

movie. lt's more like an extended L5D hallucination or a particularly vicious black and white dream. Rare,
