PuresAnd Other Support Gases

Air Liquide is one of the largest producers

of pure gases globally. Because we

produce most of these gases ourselves,

we closely control the consistency

and quality of each gas. Our customers

can be sure of getting the best quality

possible for every pure gas we deliver.

We offer three grades of ALPHAGAZ™

pure products with specifications that

meet typical application requirements and

enable you to reduce the number of

various pure gas cylinders you must keep

on site. Three grades of CHEMGAZ™

products standardize grade selections

for process gases as well as simplify

your ordering process. Three electronic

grades support a wide range of semi-

conductor, optoelectronic and other

electronic applications, while our applica-

tion-specific products provide additional

application versatility.

ALPHAGAZ Pure Gases

Choosing the right gas products for a particular analytical instrument and

application can be confusing. Air Liquide has simplified gas selection by

reducing the complex and confusing matrix of available gas grades down

to two levels of purity as represented in our ALPHAGAZ product line. Instead

of focusing on the total purity of the gas, we set limits on the critical impurities that affect the

performance of the instrument and application used.

Three Grades, Two Purity Ranges

An Air Liquide research and development team surveyed major analytical instrument man-

ufacturers to determine the recommended gas purity for their instrumentation. Studies were

then conducted on many of these instruments to determine the effect of varying levels of

impurities on their performance. Our findings indicated that two basic ranges for gas purity

are necessary to ensure optimal performance of analytical instruments in most applications.

ALPHAGAZ 2: The Highest Purity Level Possible

ALPHAGAZ 2 products exhibit the absolute lowest impurity levels available in the industry,

making them the best choice for laboratory, analytic and process control applications

where uncompromised ultra-high-purity is needed.

ALPHAGAZ 1: One Convenient Grade for Many Applications

ALPHAGAZ 1 products exceed purity recommendations of most laboratory instrument

manufacturers, making them an obvious choice for all-around use in the laboratory. Because

they provide guaranteed low impurity levels, ALPHAGAZ 1 pures are ideal for most analytic

and process control applications, including petrochemical, secondary electronics and

optoelectronics as well as scientific research and many other applications.

ALPHAGAZ 1000: Cryogenic Solutions

ALPHAGAZ 1000 provides the same specifications as ALPHAGAZ 1, but is offered for those

applications requiring cryogenic liquid argon, nitrogen and helium. Since large volumes of

gaseous nitrogen or argon are needed for ICP and FTIR instruments, cryogenic supplies can

be better suited than cylinders of compressed gas to fill this need. Liquid helium is often

used to cool magnets in instruments such as NMR spectrophotometers.

ALPHAGAZ Grades Replacement Chart

Most pure gas applications require specific impurity levels. Working with our research and development

team, we made it easy for our customers to select appropriate pure gas grades. Below are the most

common industry grades with their ALPHAGAZ replacement grade. In addition, our cylinder shoulders

are color-coded for fast, positive visual ID of cylinder contents. Although we provide visually identifiable

cylinders, users should always read the cylinder labels before using the product.

Gas Detectors

12 AIR LIQUIDE AMERICA SPECIALTY GASES LLC 800.217.2688

ALPHAGAZ™ ensures a perfect match for your instrument

and application

Chemiluminescence Detector (CD) These detectors are affected by the presence of trace

levels of the specific compounds that they are designed to measure. For example, trace

levels of sulfur often cause a shift in response.

Discharge Ionization Detector (DID) Trace levels of oxygen, moisture and hydrocarbons

can reduce detector response and affect baseline stability.

Electron Capture Detector (ECD) Moisture and oxygen in carrier gas can reduce response

of the detector. Trace halocarbons in the nuclear counter gas (P-5 mixture) can cause base-

line shift or negative peaks.

Flame Ionization Detector (FID) Hydrocarbons in carrier gases, fuel gases and oxidizer

gases can decrease detector sensitivity and reduce the life of the detector. Trace oxygen

and moisture in the carrier gas can damage chromatographic columns.

Fourier Transform Infrared Detector (FTIR) Impurities present in the carrier gas with ab-

sorbance bands at the same wave length as the species being measured can result in

inaccurate response. Moisture and oxygen can interfere with IR spectra.

Helium Ionization Detector (HID) Trace levels of hydrocarbons, oxygen or moisture can

affect detector stability.

Mass Spectroscopy Detector (MS) Impurities with atomic mass at the equivalent of the

species being measured can result in inaccurate response.

Pulsed Discharge Electron Capture Detector (PDECD) Moisture and oxygen in carrier gas

can reduce response of the detector. Trace halocarbons in the nuclear counter gas (P-5

mixture) can cause baseline shift or negative peaks.

Pulsed Discharge Helium Ionization Detector (PDHID) Trace levels of oxygen, moisture

and hydrocarbons can reduce detector response and affect baseline stability.

Pulsed Discharge Photo Ionization Detector (PDPID) Trace levels of oxygen, moisture

and hydrocarbons can reduce detector response and affect baseline stability.

Photo Ionization Detector (PID) Trace levels of oxygen, moisture and hydrocarbons can

reduce detector response and affect baseline stability.

Pulsed Flame Photometric Detector (PFPD) Trace levels of oxygen, moisture and hydro-

carbons can reduce detector response and affect baseline stability. Contaminants in flame

fuel and oxidizer can interfere with detector response.

Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD) Trace hydrocarbons and oxygen in carrier gas can

corrode the filament detector wires and reduce sensitivity.

Impurities Affecting Gas DetectorsALPHAGAZ MIX™

Certain laboratory instruments require

the use of standard gas blends. These

stock blends include such products as

fuel gases for FID detectors, flow through

gases for nuclear detectors, and gases

for the operation of special detectors for

gas chromatographs.

Air Liquide introduced the ALPHAGAZ

MIX product line of stock mixtures for

many laboratory analyzer applications.

Each product is blended to meet the

specifications required by most instrument

manufacturers. Specifications also

limit critical impurities that may impact

the performance of instruments for

which they are intended. Information

on these special products can be found

on pages 209 to 212 of this catalog.

Air Liquide simplifies selection of pure gases

while ensuring instrument performance

and sensitivity through guaranteed low-

impurity levels.

Safety Information

Neon is an inert gas that does not support life.

Can cause rapid suffocation.

Did you know?

The first neon sign in America appeared in 1923 when Earle C. Anthony purchased two signs from the

French company, Claude Neon, to hang outside his Los Angeles car dealership. Somewhat sedate

by today’s standards, they simply read, “Packard.” French engineer, chemist and inventor, Georges

Claude, who cofounded Air Liquide in 1902, displayed the first neon lamp on December 11, 1910 in

Paris and was granted a U.S. Patent (1,125,476) for his invention on January 19, 1915.
