welcomeIt is with great excitement that we present the best of Melbourne and Sydney’s Children’s International Film Festival held this November-December with a series of fun and vibrant films for kids, families and the young at heart.

As many parents and carers now know after a very unusual year, with kids at home for an extended length of time, there is an abundance of moving-image content available for children online, which makes it more important than ever to make sure that their young eyes and ears experience the very best of what cinema has to offer.

In partnership with CHIFF, we are helping to pursue their mission to deliver a programme of high-quality children’s films that go far beyond what Australian kids typically have access. Our spectacular programme of West Australian premieres contains the newest of new films, many of which have been sourced from the most prestigious children’s film festivals around the world.

These are films that are otherwise not available in Australia, so do not miss this unique opportunity for your family to see them on the big screen and enjoy the cinema experience once more in our parkland picnic venues.

This year’s programme features new re-imaginings of classic characters such as Lassie and Sherlock Holmes; plus Dino Dana making her feature film debut and a special free screening of the classic The Princess Bride. You will also get the opportunity to meet beloved film and literary characters from other parts of the world such as Coconut the Little Dragon and 5 year-old Ella Bella Bingo. And if that’s not enough we herald the rise of our own famous quokka, Daisy, who sets out to prove that the world’s most lovable animal is in fact the most scary.

So join us as we present the best of CHIFF as we have a film for you!

Coconut the Little Dragon: Into the Jungle

Coconut is the little orange dragon who proves that sometimes the smallest can be the biggest.

Coconut is a Fire Dragon who usually hangs out on Dragon Island with Oscar, a Gourmet Dragon, and Matilda, a porcupine. The trio of best friends love having adventures, but get more than they bargained for when their ships sink while they are on their way to school camp and they find themselves in a strange jungle inhabited by the mysterious Water Dragons. Friendships are tested and new allegiances are formed so all species of dragons can work together to fend off the jungle’s deadly carnivorous vines.

This feature animation about friendship and bridging cultural divides is a terrific introduction to the world of Coconut the Little Dragon: a beloved series of best-selling books that has been translated into more than 20 languages.

Very mild sense of threat in some scenes.

Daisy Quokka: World's Scariest Animal

Champions come in all sizes!

When an unbearably adorable, eternally optimistic Quokka named Daisy wants to achieve the impossible – to win the annual ‘World’s Scariest Animal’ championship, she enlists the guidance of a washed-up, former champion, a grouchy Saltwater Crocodile, to help her achieve her dreams and prove that champions can come in all sizes.

Featuring an all-star voice cast including Angourie Rice and Sam Neill, this new animated feature film brings to life a spirited set of Australian animal characters for a fun and inspiring adventure.

Some scenes may scare younger children, very mild fantasy violence, some mild bad language.

Dino Dana: The Movie

Where are all the kid dinosaurs?

Dana, the 10-year-old who has the power to imagine dinosaurs into the real world, makes a triumphant leap to the big screen with this feature-length film based on the hit Canadian TV series that celebrates science, a thirst for knowledge and the power of imagination.

Dana is ready to commence dino experiment 901 to find out just why there aren’t any kid dinosaur fossils. However, this time Dana has the help of her new neighbour Mateo who can also see the dinosaurs she conjures. The problem is that the T-Rex and Spinosaurus that the young palaeontologist-in-training has brought into the world are out of control and it’s up to Dana, Mateo and their older siblings to save the day. Along the way they learn some valuable life lessons as they solve the mystery of the missing kid dinos.

Very mild themes concerning an older child choosing what parent to live with after a divorce, mild sense of threat in some scenes, some scenes may scare or upset younger children.

The Elfkins - Baking a Difference

Good things come in small packages.

The tiny gnome-like Elfkins have lived in hiding, under the German city of Cologne, for more than 200 years. One day, after being dismissed by her fellow Elfkins one time too many for her inventions, the young Elfkin girl Helvi decides it’s time to try and return to the human world on the surface. Along with two slightly reluctant Elkfin boys, Helvi gets tangled up in the affairs of disgruntled pastry chef Theo, who is about to lose his cake shop to his scheming brother. Remembering that once upon a time Elkins used to help humans, Helvi and her friends decide to learn how to bake so they can save Theo’s business.

Inspired by tales from German folklore, this is a fun and high-spirited story about reconciliation, looking beyond old prejudices and being the best person (or Elfkin!) you can be.

Very mild slapstick violence, mild sense of threat in some scenes.

Ella Bella Bingo

Friendship is forever… except when everything changes.

Ella Bella Bingo is an imaginative 5-year-old who loves spending time with family, friends and neighbours, and coming up with imaginative ideas for things to do. Ella especially loves hanging out with her best friend Henry. Her latest scheme – to put on a circus – is going to be her best yet! However, things change when cool kid Johnny moves into the neighbourhood and Ella becomes jealous and possessive of Henry. Then the worst possible thing happens: Henry and Ella have a big argument and Henry no longer wants to be part of the circus.

Based on the hit 2011 pre-school series, this charming new feature film relaunches the world of Ella Bella Bingo as she discovers the true value of friendship.

Some scenes with a very mild sense of threat.

“It is rare for an animation to be simultaneously entertainment, information and education as much as Fritzi is.” —Cineuropa

It is 1989 and 12-year-old Fritzi lives in East Germany. When Fritzi’s best friend Sophie goes on holiday Fritzi happily agrees to take care of Sophie’s dog, Sputnik. But then Sophie doesn’t come back: she and her mum have fled across the border seeking refuge in Hungary. Fritzi becomes determined to reunite Sophie and Sputnik so starts planning to cross the border herself. Through encounters with hostile townsfolk, sympathetic friends, members of the local resistance movement and Stasi officers Fritzi discovers that life in a communist state is far more hostile and restrictive than she had ever realised. But change is in the air, and Fritzi is about to become part of something extraordinary.

Mild impact violence, mild impact themes concerning political oppression and persecution.

The Great Detective Sherlock Holmes: The Great Jail-Breaker

Director: Toe Yuena, Matthew Chow | Hong Kong | Language: English2019 | 84 mins | Recommended for ages 8+

“The Holmes that kids and dog lovers have been waiting for.” —The Hollywood Reporter

On the streets of Victorian era London, nothing gets by Sherlock Holmes the dog and his trusted companion Dr Watson the cat. Nothing, that is, except for the notorious burglar White Storm, who may well be a Robin Hood type who only steals from the rich to give to the poor, but the law is the law. However, things aren’t what they seem.

As well as trying to catch White Storm, Holmes and Watson must also protect him from Scarface, a vengeful bear. Teaming up with two Scotland Yard investigators – a gorilla and a fox – the world’s greatest detective is on the case!

From the popular Hong Kong book series, this animal variation of the Sherlock Holmes stories is both a morality tale and a rollicking adventure with terrific action set-pieces.

Mild impact violence.

Lassie Come Home

Cinema’s most famous dog returns in a modern re-telling of a classic story.

Lassie and 12-year-old Florien are inseparable best friends, so it breaks both their hearts when Lassie is sent away after Florien’s father loses his job. While Lassie’s temporary minders, which includes 12-year-old Priscilla, mean well; Lassie is mistreated by an opportunist caretaker and escapes the first chance she gets. It is the start of an epic adventure across southern Germany as Lassie makes her way back home while Florien and Priscilla set out to find her.

Eighty years after Lassie first captured hearts in English novelist Eric Mowbray Knight’s classic Lassie Come-Home, the iconic long-haired collie is ready to be discovered once more by a whole new generation.

Mild sense of threat, very mild themes concerning references to grief and loss, very mild violence, coarse language.

THE PRINCESS BRIDE

As you wish…

An elderly man reads the book The Princess Bride to his sick and thus currently bedridden adolescent grandson, the reading of the book which has been passed down within the family for generations. The grandson is sure he won’t like the story, with a romance at its core, he preferring something with lots of action and “no kissing”. But the grandson is powerless to stop his grandfather, whose feelings he doesn’t want to hurt. The story centres on Buttercup, a former farm girl who has been chosen as the princess bride to Prince Humperdinck of Florian. Buttercup does not love him, she who still laments the death of her one true love, Westley, five years ago.

This has become a modern day cinema classic beloved by all ages.

Mild violence, infrequent mild coarse language. The content is mild in impact.
