our November meeting.

Letter from Frank and Louise Coleman
As you may have heard, the AJS honored the
long time membership and related service to the
AJS provided by Frank and Louise Coleman at a
luncheon in August. We received this letter from
Frank and Louise.

AJS Board of Directors Meeting
On October 10, 2011, the AJS Board of
Directors met over lunch at Aldo’s restaurant to
discuss various topics. The following actions
were taken by your Board:
Lew George suggested that we move the
monthly dinner meeting to the fourth
Monday of each month to avoid conflicts
with some holidays. The Board
determined that this action was not
necessary.
Board members unanimously approved a
suggestion from AJS Membership
Director, Wil Sommer, to initiate a “New
Member Buddy Program”. Wil’s idea is
to ask an AJS officer to mentor new
members. The Board approved this
suggestion.
Board members had some lively and
thoughtful discussions that resulted in the
nomination of the following members as
2012 officers. Elections will take place
at the November dinner meeting at
Aldo’s Restaurant on November 28 at 7
PM. Up to the time proceeding the
voting, you can self nominate and we will
accept nominations from the floor just
prior to voting. So if you are interested
in running for an office or would like to
nominate one of our members, please
contact me on my cell phone (770) 630
0878.

2013 Jaguar XE - Spy Shots…Jaguar’s
answer to the Porsche 911?? (Photos courtesy of Road & Track magazine)
The long-rumored 2013 Jaguar XE sports car
has finally broken cover in development tests
and it looks like the front-engine/rear-drive
Porsche 911 fighter draws a lot of its styling cues
from the larger XK. The XE will be offered as a
2-seater in both coupe and convertible forms, as
well as a possible 2+2 coupe and a track-oriented
R model. Power is expected to come from a
range of V-6 engines. Jaguar, which turned a
profit under its Tata ownership, is obviously
putting the money to good use in investing in
future products like the XE, which could debut
as early as next March’s Geneva show as a 2013
model.
June’s Corner
Member News By June Mindrup, Health & Hospitality Director
Frank Coleman recently sent a hand written
note to Bob Daly and Don Hart for the luncheon
honoring him engineered by Don Hart. The
notes started out "What a super surprise!!! I was
stunned by all the wonderful AJS guys and
ladies!" Well, Commander Coleman, all us
AJS'ers were plumb pleasured to be there to
honor you and recognize all the work you have
done for our organization through the years.
Marcia Lauria will be in California and she
regrets missing the Concourse d'Elegance this
year. We'll miss you too!
A handwritten note was received from
Dabney and Alan Talbott for the floral
arrangement AJS sent to them when Alan had
back surgery. And did you know, Dabney was
admitted to the hospital the evening of Alan's
surgery? We're happy to re-port both are doing
well now.
Betty Jean and Rock Spann recently spent a
week in Pennsylvania visiting their daughter, son
in-in-law and 2 children in their new home. A
job transfer relocated them to Pennsylvania as
Betty Jean and Rock wanted to see their new
abode.
Fidel (Eddie) Ramos and wife Ming will be
visiting Erlinda McCabe October 6 - 9. The
occasion is a book launching of Eddie's life,
written by an American journalist. Ming is
Erlanda's sister and as all of us know, brother in
law Eddie is a former President of the
Philippines. Here's hoping book sales soar high!
Judy Scarborough is back from her 3-week
trip to Italy. She and her friend visited Cortona,
Tuscany and Trieste (all new places they had not
seen before). Judy said "It was HOT but in spite
of the weather, it was a most enjoyable trip.
Lew George is going to help his Mother
celebrate her 87th Birthday in Perdido Bay.
Mom is thinking about following son's footsteps
and buying an electric car!
Rita Anderson went to St. Mary's Academy
in Indianapolis, Indiana to celebrate her High
School Class Reunion. She didn't say what
year...but it couldn't have been more than her
30th anniversary.
Dabney Talbott went to Beaufort, North
Carolina visiting long term friends (since
elementary school). About 5 days were spent
rehashing their youth!
Update on the Steen's from Dave Ulmer via
Fran McNair. John and Mary Ruth Steen have
sold their home and now are living at Windward
Retirement Home, l00 Witlock Street, Room
1105, Marietta, Georgia 30064. Their phone
number is 770/428-6200. Word is that John is
not a Happy Camper, but Mary Ruth seems to be
enjoying their new location. Perhaps some
AJS'ers will remember them with a note, card or
phone call -- am sure they would enjoy hearing
from you.
Carolyn and Marvin Sikes' have been invited
to show their 1960 Jaguar Mark 2 on November
6th on the Judging Field in Hilton Head. That's
quite an honor! And we're so happy for you to
have your car so recognized. Carolyn added this
most important and newsy report "Marvin is
97% being all healthy. It's been a tough year but
you celebrate the end result."
November 3rd marks the l00th Anniversary
of the Telephone Pioneers of America. A gala
celebration will be on October 15th at the Crown
Plaza Hotel in Atlanta. The annual International
celebration will be in Boston, Massachusetts
where the organization began. Fran McNair is a
long time, dedicated member of this
organization.
New Member Department (all joined at the
Concourse held at Nalley Jaguar on October
2nd).
Wade Kingsbury from Alpharetta, GA. ,
drives a l985 Black XJ-VDP.
James Strickland drives a l961 E Type
Roadster (Gold). And for a little bit of trivia,
this car is the 3rd E Type in the U.S. AND
Frank Sinatra tried to buy it but the distributor
refused!
Michelle and David McKay from Alpharetta,
GA. who have a "fleet of Jaguars", no less!
They own a l957 XK 140; a l959 MK l-X; a l960
MK-2; a l969 XKE; a l986 XJ and a l996 XJ-12.
Doug and Becky McDougal from Cumming,
GA. drive a red 2006 S-Type.
A great big welcome to all of you. We're
so glad to have you with us.
Activities Kim Daly, Activities Director
This month brings two possible activities for
your participation. We begin next weekend with
a visit to the Georgia Aquarium for “Oceans and
Autos” Classic Car Show. What makes this
event so special is we have two members, the
Frosts and the Sikes, who have been invited to
display their cars in this car show. The list of
cars is impressive including the 1961 Mako
Shark concept vehicle, 1931 Duesenberg, 1969
Ford Shelby Prototype, 1957 Cadillac El Dorado,
1952 Jaguar XK120, 1930 Packard
Roadster….in all, forty fabulous cars will be
displayed in the ballroom and around the
aquarium.
We have chosen to visit the exhibit on
Sunday, October 23rd
. You will need to reserve
your tickets by going online to
www.georgiaaquarium.org and click the link to
the “Oceans and Autos” information. From there
you will be able to purchase your discounted
required general admission tickets to view the
auto show and aquarium. The discounted tickets
are only available online and cost $22.95 for
adults and $18.95 for seniors. Please plan to
enter the car show and aquarium at 10:30 AM on
the 23rd
.
For those of you who have worked up an
appetite after viewing the cars and taking in the
aquarium for a couple of hours, we will drive
over to The Nook on Piedmont Park to have
lunch. The Nook is located at 1144 Piedmont
Avenue NE. If you plan to attend this activity,
please call me to let me know so I can make the
luncheon reservations.
EAT, DRINK and BE SPOOKY
Saturday, October 29th is the date for our
third annual Halloween party to be held at the
home of Alice and Dick Thyer located at 792
Brannon Road Cumming, GA (770-887-1312).
Alice Thyer is the Queen of Halloween. I am
sure you have never seen so many Halloween
decorations outside of a haunted house, making
Alice’s home the perfect venue for this event.
The festivities begin at 6:30 PM. Please
bring a heavy hors d’ouerves/finger food or a
dessert to share. We will provide wine, beer and
sodas.
Costumes add to the fun, but are not
required. I ask you to RSVP to me by October
26th
.

In the news By Alan Talbott, Reporter/Photographer at Large
Stolen Car:
John Travolta had his $100,000 1970
Mercedes stolen in Santa Monica recently. He
parked on a residential street and walked to the
dealership around the corner. It happened to be a
Jaguar dealership! Something must have caught
his eye. He came back ten minutes later to
discover the Mercedes was gone. There was no
witness nor any leads for the police. A car,
particularly of this vintage, can be stolen in less
than a minute. Travolta had the key but had left it
unlocked.
10 FASTEST CARS OF 2011
10. Jaguar showed up as the 10th fastest car on
this recent list. The XF-R’s 510HP engine hit 0-
60mph in 4.5 seconds. It costs $83,000 list but
has it all going on in terms of style and luxury as
we all know.
9. Ford Shelby GT500. This is least expensive
car on the list at $49,600 but its 550HP will take
it to 60mph in 4.4 seconds. Don’t look so much
for luxury but if you want muscle here it is.
8. Mercedes C Class AMG both the C63 and the
CLS63 have the same engine at 4.4 seconds to
60mph. However the C63 is a little car with two
doors and a big engine and costs $60,000 while
the CLS63 is priced at $99,000 with the
appropriate luxury upgrades.
7. BMW X6 M. Basically an SUV it’s still fast
at 4.3 seconds to 60mph. $90,000.
6. Cadillac CTS-V. 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds at
$65,000 seems like a value.
5. Audi R8. Good looks and good times 0 to 60
at 3.9 seconds makes this all-wheel drive car a
blistering machine. At $118,450 it’s a bit pricey
to go to the convenience store for bread.
4. Chevy Corvette ZR-1. Also at 3.9 seconds is
the venerable Corvette with 638HP. At
$113,500 it’s not much less than the Audi. Bet
the route 66 boys never dreamed of that much
speed.
3. Bentley Continental SS. This all-wheel drive
behemoth beats the Corvette by a tenth (3.8) to
60mph and only costs $272,000!
2. Porsche 911 Turbo. 0-60 mph is 3.2 seconds.
You can see why they win some races. Isn’t
cheap at $136,000 but you can take it from the
dealer to the track and be competitive instantly.
1. Nissan GT-R. Never heard of it but it smokes
them all to 60 at 3.1 seconds. Some say it is
better than the 911 in overall performance and I
would have to agree based on seeing this Nissan
pitted against the Jag XF-R on a recent Top Gear
show. Smoked the Jag on the straight and in the
corners and is about the same price as the XF at
$91,000.
Just to give you some perspective of HP to
weight ratio my motorcycle does 0 to 60 in 3.5
seconds and cost $11,500 and I don’t have the
fastest one!
2011 AJS Concours d’Elegance THE PARTY
