Airport product portfolioFit for purpose bitumen solutions

Shell Bitumen delivers fit for purpose bitumen solutions to meet the performance requirements of modern runways, taxiways and aprons.

With investment in product technology combined with technical expertise, we have developed a range of products for the airport sector.

  • Shell cariphalte A premium binder meeting the needs of high performance airport pavements

Shell Cariphalte is a premium bitumen formulated specifically to meet the key performance requirements identified by the respective Airports Association:

Groove stability resistance to groove closure and edge break

    Resistance to permanent deformation

    Resistance to moisture damage

Ease of construction with the asphalt

    Resistance to fatigue.

Shell multiphalte multigrade bitumen for airport applications

First used in 1992, Shell Multiphalte has been established as one of the most popular high performance binders in Australia and France. The improved performance properties of Shell Multiphalte, combined with straightforward handling characteristics and transportability provide a binder ideally suited for many airport applications.

In a well designed asphalt mixture, Shell Multiphalte helps to achieve the following requirements:

Groove stability resistance to groove closure and edge break

    Resistance to permanent deformation

    Paveability of the asphalt

    Transportability.

Shell Multiphalte has been used at a number of airports including major works at Darwin, Hong Kong, Charles de Gaulle, Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns International airports.

Shell cariphalte fuelsafe improving the fuel resistance of asphalt

Shell Cariphalte Fuelsafe is a binder that was developed to improve the resistance of asphalt to the effects of fuel spillage. Used in a number of airports, it has proven to be an effective solution to combat the softening effects of minor spills on asphalt, while providing rheological benefits compared to standard paving grades.

    Significantly improved fuel resistance

    More durable surface mosaic

    Greater resistance to permanent deformation.

  • domestic/regional airport applications Sprayed seal surfaces

Shell cariphalte and mutiphalte Sprayed Seal Sprayed seal solutions for domestic and general aviation airport

A high number of domestic and general aviation airports are used to serve rural communities. Many of the runways and taxiways at these airports are granular pavements with sprayed seal surfaces designed to be tracked by light aircraft.

The performance of sprayed seals on regional airports is therefore key and appropriate binders should be selected for these applications. Prevention of Foreign Object Damage (FOD) from loose aggregates is an essential requirement on airport applications. Shell Bitumen has two recommended binders for sprayed seals.

Shell Multiphalte sprayed seal is engineered bitumen that improves resistance to stripping and bleeding. At high in-service temperatures the bitumen exhibits the viscosity characteristics of a 600 Pa.s material, whereas at low temperatures the binder behaves as conventional bitumen. It also allows for higher binder application rates for improved stone retention while reducing the potential to bleed.

Advantages of Shell Multiphalte sprayed seal over conventional sealing binders are:

Reduced stiffness at low temperatures minimising cracking potential

Increased stiffness and viscosity at high temperatures reducing the potential to bleed

Improved fatigue resistance characteristics helping to combat cracking.

Shell Cariphalte sprayed seal is a high performance SBS modified sealing grade bitumen that helps to control pavement cracking. The performance characteristics of bitumen can be significantly improved through the addition of appropriate polymers. Changes to the rheology of the base binder confer beneficial properties on the seal, resulting in the following:

    Reduced temperature susceptibility

    Increased stiffness modulus

    Substantially increased elasticity

    Improved adhesion.

Shell S-Grade Binders Accelerates asphalt productivity and workability to reduce operational downtime

Shell S-Grade Binders have been especially designed to improve the workability of hot mix asphalt. Due to special additives, Shell S-Grade Binders can enable lower application temperatures as low as 135C instead of the 180C needed for some polymer-modified binders. This allows the compound to cool and harden quickly to make the runway ready for aircraft taking off or landing. Shell S-Grade Binder technology can be used across the full range of bitumen grades, including any layer, as well as conventional paving grades and polymer-modified binders. They can also be used in combination with Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP). The properties of Shell S-Grade Binders lower the viscosity of the asphalt mixture at high temperatures whilst, increasing the viscosity at lower temperatures, when designed to do so.

Lower viscosity at asphalt production and laying temperatures eases compaction and extends laying windows

Increased binder viscosity at service temperatures delivers better rutting and adhesion performance than conventional bitumen

The binders can exhibit an increase in the softening point.
