MIMO: AN INNOVATIVE MULTI-DIMENSIONAL APPROACHMIMO is defined as “spatial multiplexing” where multiple

unique data streams are sent and received in the same

channel at the same time thereby maximizing spectral

efficiency and simultaneously increasing data rates

along with range and reliability.

MIMO is a revolutionary technique that actually relies

on multi-path, signal reflections previously thought to

hinder performance. Each multi-path route can be treated

as a separate channel creating multiple “virtual wires”

over which to transmit signals. MIMO employs multiple,

spatially separated antennas to take advantage of

these multiple “virtual wires” created by multi-path and

transfer more data. In addition to multiplying through-

put, range is increased because of an antenna diversity

advantage, since each receive antenna has a measure-

ment of each transmitted data stream.

With MIMO, the maximum data rate per channel grows

linearly with the number of different data streams that

are transmitted in the same channel. MIMO is the only

multiple antenna technique that increases spectral

capacity by delivering two or more times the peak data

rate of a system per channel or per MHz of spectrum.
