Aircraft Tow Bars
Specially desgined aircraft tow bars havesince many years been an integral partof the complete Cavotec Fladung range.Thanks to their innovative designfeatures and high quality, the CavotecFladung tow bars are capable of towingall types of aircraft from all majormanufacturers such as Boeing, Airbus,Tupolev, Ilushyn, Saab.
The standard available tube lengths are3.510mm, 4.430mm and 6.885mm.Each can be fitted with optional featuressuch as torsion adapters, shockabsorbers and a pivoting towing eye.
The towing tubeThe main part of any aircraft tow bar isthe towing tube. Cavotec Fladung towbars all feature either a specialaluminium or steel tube. Each individual
tow bar is specifically designed for acertain type of aircraft and is thereforecapable of towing any load related tothat individual aircraft. The tube comesequipped with handles on both endsand a towing eye with a 76mm diameter(NATO towing eye).
Undercarriage and hydraulicsThe tow bar undercarriage consists of arectangular tube construction and comesequipped with an optional swing axleand two tyres. Each tow bar can beadjusted in height through an hydraulichandpump, allowing it to be raisedtowards the nosewheel hook-up point.Remember that when connected to theaircraft the tow bar must be lowered tothe correct transport height. Thelowering speed is adjustable through avalve mounted on the tow bar.
The drawing on the next page show thedefault undercarriage and hydraulicsconfigurations of both the standard anduniversal tow bars.
Handling extra-long tow barsIt is possible that a situation occurswhere the distance between the tow baradapter head and floor is too low. Thiscan be due to, for instance, the extralength of the tow bar or height of thecoupling on the towing truck. As thissituation occurs when the tow bar is inits lowered position, the tow bar has tobe transported in the raised (upper)position. To ensure a safe operationhowever, the tow bar must only beraised sufficiently to obtain enoughspace between the adaptor and tarmacapron.

Tow bar adapters
A very important part of each tow bar isthe adapter head, as it provides theactual connection between tow-truckand aircraft. The adapter is a handoperated locking device fitted withaircraft specific claws that interlock withthe towing device at the nosewheel.
The transfer of force and pressure fromthe tow bar to the adapter head goesthrough two specially designed shearbolts. These bolts are constructed insuch a way that when too much force isexerted on the connection they willbreak away, preventing further damageto the nosewheel.
To ensure that the adapter head cannotbe pulled out of the flange, it is fittedwith an additional screw that remains inplace even after the shear bolts havebeen broken. The shear bolts must betightened using a torque wrench andaccording to the specified amount oftorque.
Adapter optionalsThe Cavotec Fladung tow bars andadapter heads can be fitted with anumber of optional devices. For theadapter head the most importantoptional is the “Turning Device forAdapter”. This device allows theadapter head to be turned 15°degrees in both directions providingunprecedented flexibility whilemaintaining a completely safeoperating environment.

Mini Tow Bar
The Cavotec Fladung mini-tow bar isspecially designed for towing smallaircraft with a maximum of 2000 kgnosewheel weight (or 15% maximumtakeoff weight). It features a steel tubemounted with a special heightadjustable drawbar eye, anundercarriage with soft tyres and anoverall length of only 3.800mm.
Operating this tow bar is simple as thenose wheel support-shell is lifted andlowered by hydraulic cylinders operatedeither by handpumps, or by the oil pumpon the aircraft. The lowering speed canbe set over a one-way restrictor with abuilt-in rope winch, enabling easyplacement of the nose wheel into thesupport-shell.
