1  Abstract The problem required the calculation of the internal loads and moments in a fuselage frame with an elliptical cross sectional shape and uniform depth. Complementary energy methods were used in order to solve the problem, however the mathematics became tedious when considering an analytical solution and as such much of the problem was solved numerically. This was simplified with the use of Microsoft Excel, where certain integration problems were solved using the Trapezoidal Rule over small increments (where the method is considered suitably accurate). The resultant internal moment at the top of the frame was calculated as 60275 Nmm, the resultant internal axial force at the same location was calculated as -160 N, and the rotation angle due to the applied moment was calculated as 0.196 degrees. Finally the maximum stress at the top of the frame was calculated as 8.559MPa.

1.  Geometric Analysis

The following figure shows the right-hand half of the structure under analysis. Symmetry is exploited

in this case because the angular displacement in the vertical plane at the top and bottom of the

frame is equal to zero. Notably the effects of shear are ignored as the effects of bending momentand internal axial load are far greater in magnitude.

Analysing a cross section with two elliptical defining perimeters required an expression relating the

radius of the ellipse with angle of rotation around the ellipse. For the geometry in the problem this

expression could be represented as:

Hence for the thickness of the frame at any point, the difference between the outer and inner radii:

This calculation was required to calculate the moments of area for each infinitesimal sector of the

frame, required for determining the internal load distribution.

Due to the structure being opened along the vertical axis and the wing moments situated along the

horizontal axis the loading was different for the top and bottom halves of the analysed section. Thus

In the case of the fuselage frame, the value for b is a constant (given as 10mm) and the value for h is

actually the local value for the frame thickness (difference of outer and inner radii). The value for

frame thickness was calculated for each degree of rotation and thus for each degree of rotation the

value for moment of area could be calculated. This local value for moment of area was required for

the numerical calculation of the integrals P, Q, R, S and T.
