Applied Dynamics International (ADI) sup-plies tools and services for the development of electronic systems found in modern aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, military ground vehicles, weapon systems, unmanned aerial vehicles and more. ADI technology and expertise are involved in the development of aerospace and defense products with a focus on intelligent integration through the use of real-time simu-lation and simulation-based software test. Aircraft development programs include tight schedules and the integration of substantial new technology such as advanced flight con-trols, new cockpit displays and controls, cut-

The typical aircraft integration lab provides a flight simulator used by engineering teams to develop, integrate, and test aircraft subsys-tems. Subsystems such as flight controls, avionics, and cockpit displays are brought to the integration lab, connected to the simulator and taken for a virtual flight test. Real-time simulation is used to integrate those compo-nents of aircraft flight that are difficult or costly to bring into a lab such as aerodynamics, six degrees-of-freedom motion, changing global position, and 70,000 lbs-thrust engines. during simulated flight test is much more cost effective and imposes far less risk on the de-velopment program than flaws found during final flight test.

Aircraft development programs of yesteryear would task a group of software and electri-cal engineers to develop “home-grown” real-time simulation systems from the ground up. Home-grown real-time simulator development added significant cost and risk to the develop-ment program.

Today, advanced aerospace and defense pro-grams rely on ADI’s ADvantage framework to provide a real-time simulation backbone offer-ing:

• More than a decade of success on the most advanced development programs

• Development costs spread over a large user base

• Field proven scalability and reliability• All software features required by the

most demanding development program

As simulation technology continues to evolve with new versions of popular simulation lan-guages, such as Simulink and SystemBuild, and as new standard aerospace interfaces, such as ARINC-664 are adopted, the ADvan-tage framework continues to evolve with sup-port for the latest technologies.

Overview

The typical aircraft inte-gration lab combines real aircraft electronics and avi-onics with distributed real-time simulators. Real-time simulators provide those components of aircraft flight that are difficult or costly to bring into the lab. An effec-tive integration lab simulator allows engineering teams to have a high level of visibility into the inner workings of each electronic and simu-lated component.

Intelligent Integration is an approach used to perform highly efficient integration for aircraft development programs. When performing Intelligent Integration, a pure-software “vir-tual integration lab” is implemented in parallel with real-time simulator implementation. This approach allows for greater parallelization of development activities and thus reduces the overall cost and schedule for aircraft integra-tion.

The ADvantage framework is the only simula-tion framework designed specifically for Intel-ligent Integration. ADvantage provides seam-less movement between low-cost desktop simulation and high-performance real-time simulation to optimize integration efficiency.

Aircraft Integration APPLIED DYNAMICS

A concern that often prompts the develop-ment of “home-grown” real-time simulators is the question: “Can I guarantee interoper-ability and compatibility with all my existing and future technologies?” Aircraft integration labs must interface with a combination of cut-ting edge and proprietary technologies. This

raises the concern of whether an off-the-shelf real-time simulation framework will keep pace with the latest technologies and whether it will enable company-specific technologies to be easily interfaced. By building a “home-grown” real-time simulator, aircraft integra-tion projects can have full control over system

compatibility and interoperability at the cost of increased development effort.

The ADvantage framework provides the best of both worlds by offering a large-user-base, easy-to-use, reliable, and lower-cost simula-tion framework combined with complete com-patibility and interoperability. Full compatibility and interoperability is achieved by using a fully open architecture. This open architecture in-cludes numerous real-time and non-real-time interfaces enabling integration teams to cus-tomize and extend the framework functionality to meet legacy, present, and future needs.

Integration teams make use of the depth of functionality that exists within the framework. When unique customizations are required, the integration team develops only the required unique components connected through well-documented, reliable interfaces.

Intelligent Integration

Aircraft integration is a high pressure, technologically challenging activ-ity. At ADI we’re proud of our highly trained experts who’ve been in-volved in many of the most demanding aircraft integration projects over the past twenty years. ADI’s areas of expertise include:

• Turnkey simulator design & manufacturing• Test system design & manufacturing• Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation system development• Simulation model development• Integration lab support• Sensor emulator, electronic circuit, and board design• Embedded system programming• Real-time operating system (RTOS) software development• User interface programming• Test script development• Enterprise automation development• Revision control integration• Automatic test report generation

Advanced aircraft in-tegration labs include a complete cockpit. Simulated test flights are performed to allow for human factors as-sessment, test system interaction, and catch avionics software bugs early in the development program. Ultimately, the duration and cost of final flight test is reduced by finding design and implementation errors through simulated flight test.
