It’s not just help, it’s HOPEPamela Jordan is in training to be a case manager for The Breathing Association’s HEAP program. During a recent visit to a client’s home, Pamela immediately recognized the desperation in the young mother’s eyes. Because she’s been there.
Pamela recalls the day a Breathing Association case manager came to her home, barely 5 years ago. She had just returned from the emergency room diagnosed with pneumonia and wondered how she would manage the mounting bills. Making ends meet when she was healthy was hard enough, but the complications of asthma and diabetes made it that much more difficult, especially with a job that did not provide health insurance. Just leaving the house in the bitter winter cold to get to work could land her back in the ER.
That visit from The Breathing Association began to turn things around for Pamela and as she works with clients today, she knows that more than the help with the heating bills, more than the prescription assistance, more than the referrals to other resources, it is hope that she can leave behind.
Pamela is grateful to no longer be in crisis and have the chance to give back. She knows the programs and services offered by The Breathing Association can be lifesaving and life changing. And she celebrates each and every victory with a full heart.

Raising the tobacco sales age to 21 would cut smoking, save livesMost smokers will tell you they started smoking before the age of 21. Studies show that the effect nicotine has on adolescent brain development results in a stronger nicotine addiction, heavier daily tobacco use, and more trouble with quitting later in life.
Increasing the minimum sales age for tobacco products can be an effective tool to reduce youth tobacco use. Tobacco 21 is a movement to raise the legal age to purchase nicotine and tobacco products from 18 to 21. We congratulate the citizens of Upper Arlington, the first Ohio city that unanimously voted to pass this legislation for their community’s families. Several other cities in our area are actively working to follow suit to protect their youth.
The Breathing Association is a committed supporter of the Tobacco 21 initiative and has a long history of promoting legislation to reduce tobacco addiction and exposure to second hand smoke in Ohio. Read more at Tobacco21.org and follow us on Facebook to learn how you can support this important effort.
