AIRSLIDETM CONVEYOR INSTALLATIONObservance of the following, where applicable, will produce optimum performance of the Airslide conveyor:A. Caulking compound must be applied to the entire face of the conveyor end flanges; this

also includes the face of the flange supporting the fabric as this is the only gasketing usedat these joints.B. When installing any Airslide flowgate, make certain it is installed with the operatingmechanisms of the valve downstream of the flowgate with respect to material flow. This will

assure the gate will open in the direction of material flow.C. The side discharge valve is an aligned mechanical device. In order to insure

satisfactoryoperation, any conveyor misalignment must not be corrected by exerting anytwisting action through the valve. The conveyor must be supported so that no strain isbrought to bear on the valve. Drawing 108-75-2-5505 shows the suggested method ofAirslide supports that can be used on an enclosed Airslide conveyor.

    D. It is important that any open type Airslide conveyors, when supported off the sloping floorof asilo or bin, be supported throughout their entire length. Additionally, provision must bemade to recess any intermediate flanges in the supporting member, in order that no weightwill be carried by the flanges. Do not walk on the fabric of allow it to become wet. For themethod of installing open type Airslide conveyors in silo or bin cones see drawing 108-02-3-0026.

    E. When Airslide fabric edge is exposed to the elements, we recommend a coat ofmoistureresistant paint be applied after erection.

    F. Avoid any unnecessary Airslide fabric. If burning or welding is necessary, protect theexposed fabric from sparks or hot metals. If necessary, several fabric hold-down bolts maybe removed in the area in which work is to be performed and a thin steel sheet inserted forprotection.

    G. The system is designed to convey dry, pulverized material. The presence of lumps ormoisture in the material will retard or stop the flow.

    H. Temperature of material being conveyed is not to exceed 350F (175C) for polyesterAirslide fabric, 475F (246C) for kevlar Airsiide fabric, or 800F (425C) for fiberglassfabric. Higher temperatures will damage the Airslide fabric.

    I. A fan type blower (usually equipped with an intake filter) should be located in as dust-freean atmosphere as possible in order to minimize the amount of dust drawn into theAirslide air chamber through the fan intake.

    J. Where a positive pressure blower unit is supplied, the filter or filter-silencer unit should beserviced regularly in accordance with the maintenance instructions printed thereon. If thisunit is not serviced properly, the filter element will become fouled, causing foreign matter tobe drawn through the blower unit and into the Airslide fabric and thus affect theperformance of both units.

    K. Air supply for the operation of the Airslide system must be clean and dry, free from oil ormoisture, otherwise the Airslide fabric will eventually become plugged, requiringreplacement. See drawing 108-02-3-0029 for standard air piping methods which are usedto supply the required clean air.

"Procedure for Field Assembly of Airslide Sections""Typical Assembly Airslide Conveyor Section""Typical Assembly of Airslide Conveyor Section with Wire Screen"

See drawings below when using the Airslide fabric stretcher to attach fabric to an Airslidesection:Drawings:H65-C2320 (4" & 6" Airslide); H65-C2091 (8" -16" Airslide; H67-D520 (19" - 24" Airslide)VENTINGThe Airslide conveyor(s) must be relieved of any positive pressure above the Airslide" fabric forsatisfactory operation. See Venting Guide Drawing H62-D2361.OPERATIONThe blower unit( s) should be located as near as possible to the Airslide conveyor air inletsserved in order that the air piping as well as pressure losses can be kept to a minimum.See drawing 108-02-3-0029 for Airslide standard air piping methods.A. PRE-START CONTROL SETTINGS

Initially the butterfly control valves should be set as follows:1. Set the valve(s) at fan type blower(s) to half open.2. For any open-type Airslide to be activated - set the control valve at full open.3. For any Airslide or air feeder immediately adjacent to material inlet throughwhich material is to be withdrawn from a bin - set the control valve at full open.4. For any Airslide material trap - set the control valve at one quarter to one

half open.5. Set all other control valves to Airslide conveyor( s) to half open. The Airslide conveyor(s) must receive activating air from the blower(s)before Material is introduced for conveying.

    B. START-UP PROCEDURE FOR FLOW CONTROL DEVICESWhen starting the system(s) any Airslide flow gate or airfeeder installed for use as amaterial flow control should have an initial opening of 1". This is accomplished as follows:For hand-operated Airslide butterfly flow gate, open the gate on the handle quadrant toapproximately 30 and tighten at this position. Check material flow and adjust the gate ifnecessary to obtain proper flow capacity. For air-operated Airslide butterfly flow gate, back off the adjustable stop to the desiredgate opening. Gate opening should be approximately 1" above the top of the fabric. Checkmaterial flow and adjust the gate if necessary to obtain proper flow capacity. For hand-operated slim model Airslide flow gate, raise the gate until the mark on thehandle quadrant is in line with the locking bolt and tighten at this position. For air-operated slim model Airslide flow gate, loosen the bolts holding the air motor to itssupport bracket and slide it toward the centerline of the gate as far as i t will go; then backoff 1". Retighten bolts. For cast aluminum air-operated Airslide flow gate, the dimension from the bottom of thehand know to the top of the nut equals gate opening. For an airfeeder, a 1" handle movement equals a 1" gate movement.

CAUTIONDo not flush the conveyor with material by raislnq the gate

Blade too much; otherwise, flooding of the receiving equipment, dusting, and venting problems can occur.

Any side discharge valve in the system should be actuated only with material flowing or withno material on the conveyor.Never actuate the valve with the conveyor deactivated and full of dead material. With material being fed to the Airslide conveyor(s), observe the flow of material throughan observation port(s) and regulate the Airslide feed until the required capacity isattained. Then readjust the hand-operated air control valve(s) until the most satisfactoryconveying occurs with a minimum of dusting and turbulence. When deactivating a system(s) be certain that the feed is shut off to the Airslide?"conveyor(s) before stopping the blower(s).

"CAUTION"Observance of the following, where applicable, will produce optimum performance of the Airslide conveyor:A. We particularly call your attention to the fact that caulking compound must be applied to the

entire faces of the conveyor and flanges; this also includes the face of the flange supportingthe fabric as this is the only gasketing used at these joints.

    B. When installing any Airslide flowgate, care must be taken to make certain that the flowgateis installed with the operating mechanisms of the valve downstream of the flowgate withrespect to material flow. Flow direction is indicated on Hi-Top valves with a flow arrow. This will assure the gate with open in the direction of material flow.

    C. The side discharge valve and stream splitter are aligned pieces of mechanical equipment. In order to insure satisfactory operation, any conveyor misalignment must not be correctedby exerting any twisting action through the valve. The conveyor must be supported so thatno strain is brought to bear on the valve.

    D. It is important that any open type Airslide, when supported off the sloping floor of a silo orbin, be supported throughout its entire length, with provision made to recess anyintermediate flanges in the supporting member, in order that no weight will be carried by theflanges. Do not walk on the fabric or allow it to become wet. For method of installing opentype Airslide in silo or bin cones see drawing 108-02-2-0026.

    E. When the Airslide fabric edge is exposed to the elements, a coat of moisture resistant paint, applied after erection is recommended.

    F. Avoid any unnecessary burning or welding near exposed Airslide fabric. If burning orwelding is necessary, protect the exposed fabric from sparks or hot metals. If necessary, several fabric hold-down bolts may be removed in the area in which work is to be performedand a thin steel sheet inserted for protection.

    G. The system is designed to conveyor dry, pulverized material as specified under GeneralData. The presence of lumps or moisture in the material will retard to stop the flow.

    H. Temperature of material being conveyed is not to exceed 350 F. (175C) for polyesterAirslide fabric; 475 (245C) for Kevlar Airslide fabric, or 800F (425C) for fiberglass fabric.Higher temperatures will damage the Airslide fabricNOTE: These material temperatures are with the aeration air to the Airslide operating.

    I. A fan type blower should be located in as dust-free an atmosphere as possible in order tominimize the amount of dust drawn into the Airslide air chamber. When the fan is suppliedwith an inlet filter, the filter unit should be serviced regularly in accordance with themaintenance instructions.

INSTALLATION OF GAX-19 FIBERGLASS FABRIC:When installing fiberglass fabric on Airslide equipment, the cut ends must be treated/sealed withurethane and Viton (to prevent fraying) using the following step:1. Rough cut fabric - allowing 1/2" to 3/4" overhang at each cut end.2. Coat with Y-300 urethane cement (both top and bottom) approximately 1" to 1-/2" (includingoverhang) at each cut end. Urethane cement includes a hardener and should be tinned

enough for complete fabric saturation.3. After proper curing, per manufactures recommendation, cut fabric to required size and

shape. Note: Cutting will be approximately mid-point of the urethane application.4. After mixing G-420 Viton cement with G-421 activator, per manufactures recommendation,

brush on a thick coat over the areas already cemented with urethane cement (top andbottom). Allow to dry (approximately 30 minutes).5. Attach fabric to one end using required hardware.6. Smooth out any wrinkles and hand pull "tight", but not taut to opposite side (fiberglass fabricshould not be excessively stretched). Attach with required hardware.7. If needed, trim fabric with a sharp tool. A straight metal edge guide can be used if desiredon fabric edge for cutting.REQUIRED CEMENTS:1. Y-300 urethane cement (with hardener).- Available container size: pint, quart or gallon.

    - Coverage: Edge coverage is approximately 25 lineal feet per pint.2. G-420 Viton Cement (with G-421 Activator).- Available container size: pint, quart or gallon.- Coverage: Edge coverage is approximately 65 lineal feet per pint.NOTE: Above cements must be purchased from FLSmidth, Inc
