PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Something old, something new..

It is hard to imagine CCTMC becoming old, however it has become a regular staple in the yearly conference lineup. It is also known for its quality education and networking. Of all the cities ever to host my favorite has been San Antonio, and Im sure this years offerings will not disappoint. If you have not already planned to travel, think about stopping by CCTMC and the Critical Care Procedural Anatomy Program, the Scientific Forum, the Simulation Tournament of Champions, and for the lectures themselves. I certainly will be there and look forward to meeting all of you. CCTMC has been going strong for two and a half decades and I cannot wait to spend time with an old friend.

The last fall we had the opportunity to start a new tradition for AMPA. We held our 25th Anniversary celebration at Del Friscos in Fort Worth. A special thank you to Kevin Hutton and Golden Hour Data Systems for helping to sponsor the event. We were fortunate enough to have Frank Thomas speak about the founding and beginnings of AMPA at Snowbird, Utah in 1992. Past Presidents, Founding Members, AMPA members old and new attended the celebration. We were also fortunate enough that evening to honor another of AMPAs most distinguished members. The Board had decided that Frank Thomas would give the first Pat Petersen Lecture with the hope of starting a new annual tradition. Pat Petersen has been with the organization from the beginning, and whenever I ask a former president or AMPA member about her, it is clear her role has been indispensable. She not only manages AMPAs daily affairs; she has the long-standing institutional stewardship that helps maintain our organization. To paraphrase a former AMPA president, Pat is AMPA. I ask that the next time you see or speak to Pat, please thank her for all she has done. I also hope to see you at next years Air Medical Physician Symposium (AMPS) and look forward to the second Pat Petersen Lecture.

The AMPA Board has been working hard to improve your options and ability to network on the AMPA website, www.ampa.org. Please check out the members only section, post comments or make queries. Use this AMPA benefit.

Best regards,

Lauri Bolton, MD

President

AMPA Awards

AMPA Distinguished Physician:

The Air Medical Physician Association Distinguished Physician Award was established in 1993 to recognize a physician who has significantly contributed to the air medical profession, and to recognize lifetime achievement and service to the air medical community. Recipients are nominated by their peers and selected by the Board of Trustees.

This years Distinguished Physician has been a practicing flight physician for nearly 30 years, and has provided care for thousands of patients requiring critical care transport. He is a Clinical Professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and has been published in textbooks and peer reviewed journals. He has lectured internationally, and has for many years contributed to the air medical community.

This years Air Medical Physician Association Distinguished Physician is Dr. Michael Abernethy.

AMPA Medical Director of the Year:

The Air Medical Physician Association Medical Director of the Year is awarded to a physician who has made outstanding contributions to their program. Nominations for this award come from the staff of individual programs and the Board of Trustees selects the recipient. This years recipient has long been involved with the Life Link III program, and was recognized for his dedication to excellent in safety, training, education, and quality. This is extended to not only the members of the team, but to patients, customers, and partners.

This years Air Medical Physician Association Medical Director of the Year is Dr. R. J. Frascone.

Did you know..

Most of those who attended the October, 2017 Medical Director Core Curriculum and AMPS conferences in Fort Worth were AMPA members, between 41-50 years of age. They first heard about AMPA from a colleague, and have on average been an AMPA member for five years or less. The majority are emergency medicine physicians who have been a medical director five years or less, and most spend 20% or less of their time on medical direction or critical care medical transport activities. Their transport programs are CAMTS or EURAMI certified. These members have attended the conferences primarily to network, or increase their education and felt that the topics covered were more important to them than the location of the meeting or the number of CME awarded. Most did not need approval to attend the meeting, and the registration fees were covered by their hospital and/or transport program, or they paid themselves. Attending the AMPA Medical Director courses were more valuable to them than attending AMTC or CCTMC. The majority also felt that they would benefit by a Medical Director Certification.

(Information obtained from Entrance Surveys completed by conference attendees).

Welcome to new AMPA Members!

Interest Group

Friends,

Best wishes to all!

Brief updates from the AMPA Flight Physician Interest Group:

First, as you notice above, we have decided to refer to the group as an interest group rather than a committee. This change is for consistency with similar AMPA groups going forward.

Second, the AMPA Flight Physician Podcast is live! Please find our inaugural podcast at www.AMPA.org. After arriving at the main page, click on members, and then, audio file sharing in the drop-down menu. More to come!! (plans do exist to upload podcasts to other venues like iTunes in the future)

Third, if you havent registered a login for the website, please do this today!! We wont be creating an interest group listserv (as was our plan) in the hope that all discussions/communications can happen on the sites new discussion boards. I can attest that on my first pass, they were easy to sign up for, as well as navigate.

Last, if you have any desire to get more involved with the Flight Physician IG, please send me an email at: [email protected]

Cheers,

Mike Steuerwald, M.D.

New AMPA Membership Category

The AMPA Board recognizes that for physicians outside of North America, an AMPA membership is significantly more expensive than professional memberships with other organizations they might join. In an effort to support and foster more involvement from our international colleagues, a change has been made in our dues structure to be more welcoming to the Non-North American physician member. Beginning January 1, 2018 the annual dues for this category is $200.00 USD. Please encourage your non-North American colleagues who have had to let their AMPA membership lapse due to cost that a change has been made and to rejoin.

Watch the AMPA website www.ampa.org and your mailbox for the CCTMC 2018 brochure! CCTMC always promises excellent clinical education for the critical care transport medicine providerand they deliver!
