Dear Valued Customer,

I hope the summer months have provided you and your family

time to enjoy our many beautiful destinations.

It’s always a great pleasure here at Gulfstream International Airlines to partner with those individuals and organizations who share our mission of giving back and improving the lives of our fellow man.

As you relax and enjoy this magazine, ponder that a majority of economically disadvantaged youth not only don’t know how to read, they don’t even own a book. They couldn’t even read the words you’re reading at this moment. But for more than 10 years, an extraordinary man has been trying to make a difference in childhood illiteracy—and succeeding.

Every year, former Miami Dolphins linebacker Twan Russell has made it his mission to help 800 at-risk youth get a better shot at life by knowing how to read and write. The Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation, (RLSARF) is dedicated to childhood literacy, making the joy of reading part of the game plan. RLSARF provides free after-school reading programs to increase reading proficiency, raise reading levels, create a passion for reading and share life skills that empower young persons in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

For the past six years, we at Gulfstream International Airlines have partnered with RLSARF’s signature fundraising events, Laughs for Literacy, Links to Literacy and Art and Athletes with proceeds benefiting their mission to eradicate illiteracy among our youth. We’re proud to be part of such a powerful movement and hope you’ll be equally inspired by this promising athlete, who found he could live his dreams through books even though an injury robbed him of the remainder of his professional football career. He’s shared that love of reading with thousands since founding RLSARF in 1999.

“Forty million adults in this country are ‘functionally illiterate,’ reading at or below a fifth grade level. Millions of people cannot read things we take for granted,” Russell says. “Success begins with reading, having people believe in you and believing in your potential.” We believe in him and invite you to learn more about Twan Russell’s work by visiting www.russellreadingroom.com.

Your tax deductible donations will help at-risk youth obtain the lifetime gift of literacy and increase their chances of becoming productive and successful citizens.

Enjoy the flight. Happy reading. Sincerely, Dave HackettPresident and CEOGulfstream International Airlines

It’s been estimated that Americans alone spent upwards of $7 billion a year on skin care products, hoping for a miracle or magic. Now a new product created from natural ingredients that measured so

high in anti-aging and antioxidant components that a laboratory, using French government grants, had to re-test to verify its fi ndings, has hit the market. It’s called Paris-Bahamas. The ingredients: Bahamian seagrape and Bahamian Royal Poinciana. Paris-Bahamas founder Christiane Weschle, international marketing manager for one of the world’s top three cosmetic and skin care companies for more than 10 years, was visiting The Bahamas when she was captivated by the luxuriant growth of plants and brilliantly colored blossoms. She took tree

and plant samples back to France for testing and when the seagrape turned out to have the highest natural antioxidant properties researchers had ever tested, she began working with a lab. Two years later, she launched Paris-Bahamas. The line, packaged elegantly with clear acrylic and Bahamian pink sand, has captured the attention of high-end fashion and lifestyle magazines in Europe. In The Bahamas, it is available at John Bull, Bay Street, Cole’s of Nassau and Bahamas Sol at Lynden Pindling International Airport among other locations.

$12 Million Fantasy IslandA fantasy island in The Bahamas

awaits. It’s called Neptune’s Nest and like the mythological god, it feels like a fairy tale rising from the sea. The 117-acre island lies in the pristine Berry Islands where fi shing and diving are still boast-worthy. Trimmed in beachfront, it has sheltered anchorages on three sides and elevations up to 50 feet. Contact, Marilyn at (242) 364-1422, BahamaIslandsRealty.com or call your Realtor.

Paris-Bahamas Nature’s Miracle

Entertainment giant Disney, through its Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, and The Nature Conservancy are joining hands to save a protected area of coral reefs off Andros, the largest island in The Bahamas and site of the world’s third largest great barrier reef. When the expansion of the Westside National Park of Andros is completed, it will be a record 55 square miles of reef, almost two and a half times the size of Manhattan.

Without such efforts creating a network of well-managed protected marine areas, scientists say, the fragile coral reefs of the Caribbean, now home to hundreds of marine species including dolphins, sea turtles and a wide range of fi sh, could be wiped out in 50 years.

“We’re excited to collaborate with The Nature Conservancy on an initiative that takes the impact of Disneynature’s storytelling to an entirely new level,” said Alan Bergman, president of The Walt Disney Studios. The project also lifts protection to a new level—stretching the 300,000 acres to nearly a million acres of protected reef along the west side of Andros, often referred to as Nature’s Undiscovered Gem.

Miami Wine Fair Uncork the Best

Five hundred producers from 20 countries will descend upon the Miami Beach Convention Center from October 14 -17th for the 9th Annual Miami International Wine Fair. The event, open to the public on the 15th and 16th, offers everyone from the casual and curious to the fi ne wine connoisseur a taste of the grape from vineyards around the globe. Dozens of seminars and guided tastings provide opportunities to sip more than 1,600 wines, though such ambition

is not recommended on an individual basis. The Wine Fair has become such a popular Miami event that it’s a must-do for those who want a taste of the good life. For more information, (866) 887-WINE or check out www.miamiwinefair.com.

Island HoppingYour guide to The Islands of The Bahamas

Just 50 miles east of South Florida’s coast lie over 700 tropical islands and cays that combine the seascapes of the Caribbean with the untouched quality of the

South Pacific. Flamingos walk the shallows in search of shrimp while just beyond, along the sun-drenched pink-and-white sand beaches, iguanas feast on hibiscus flowers. In The Bahamas, “fast paced” is confined to wave runners and roulette wheels. Here, world-class resorts offer accommodations for families, business travelers, and couples in search of seclusion.

The Abacos The famous red and white candy-striped lighthouse still serves as a beacon to

all the sailing, fishing and yachting enthusiasts who come to play in the tranquil waters of the Abacos. The 130-mile stretch of bays, beaches, secluded inlets, pine forests, lagoons and pastel New England-style villages welcomes visitors who seek first-class diversions. The Albert Lowe Museum, located on Green Turtle Cay, highlights the area’s unique culture, from its shipbuilding traditions to its local artists. This quiet island escape entices those seeking unspoiled beaches and an extremely laid-back atmosphere.

AndrosAndros is the largest island in The Bahamas and the fifth-largest in the

Caribbean, attracting divers and fishing enthusiasts, as well as casual sightseers. Mostly flat, its 2,300 square miles is one of the biggest unexplored tracts of land in the Western Hemisphere. It consists of pine forests, thick impenetrable bush, mangrove marsh and palm-lined beaches along the east coast, riddled with lakes and creeks, and most of the local residents live along the eastern shore. The Andros Barrier Reef, the world’s third-largest and healthiest barrier reef lies off the coast, and divers come from all over the world to explore it. The reef plunges 6,000 feet to a narrow drop-off known as the Tongue of the Ocean. The island also offers a vast array of Blue Holes for the experienced diver. These underwater cave systems are found both inland and in the ocean, and though no one has even gone in one and out the other, it is believed that they do connect. Bonefishing here is among the best on earth, and Andros is also known for its world-class marlin and bluefin tuna fishing.

BiminiBimini is made up of three major

islands—North, South and East Bimini—that are rich with history and natural resources. Most of the islands’ population, about 1,600 residents, live in Bailey Town in North Bimini, while the main tourist center is in Alice Town, also on North Bimini. Most of the hotels, restaurants and fishing operations can also be found here.

It’s believed that this tiny island was once part of the road system of the Lost Continent of Atlantis. But

today it’s the fishing that makes this island known throughout the world.

Cat IslandNamed after the pirate Arthur

Catt, Cat Island is the sixth largest island in The Bahamas, located near the Tropic of Cancer. With temperatures in the high 60s during the short winters, rising to the mid-80s in summer, and pristine virgin beaches, Cat Island is one of the most beautiful islands in The Bahamas. Local historians claim that Cat Island residents were the first to

see Columbus. The great explorer himself was believed by some to have been welcomed here by the Arawaks.

Beautiful beaches offer an array of water sports. Boating and diving are among the main reasons to go to Cat Island, and diving lessons are available for novices.

Eleuthera Eleuthera is one of the longest

islands in The Bahamas, 110 miles from top to bottom. This intimate isle of rolling hills and lush green forests beckons visitors with the subdued charm of yesteryear. Quaint colonial villages echo the history of the island’s pilgrim settlers who arrived over 300 years ago and named the land Eleuthera, “freedom” in Greek. Vacationers indulge in that same carefree spirit as they roam miles of pink sand beaches that lead to lush plantations where exotic fruits from pineapples to mangos grow in abundance. The mile-long Cave at Hatchet Bay invokes the Earth’s past with spectacular stalagmite and stalactite formations that glitter by torchlight.

Harbour IslandHarbour Island was a noted

shipyard and sugar refinement center in the late 1800s, and the resourceful residents have also made their way in the world as skilled shipbuilders and farmers. The island itself has little fertile soil, but residents were given land to farm on the “mainland” (Eleuthera) in 1783, and much of that original grant is still being tilled by Brilanders today.

The ExumasThis 100-mile-long string of 365

islands and cays—most of them uninhabited—is the great yachting mecca of The Bahamas. These waters, some of the prettiest in The Bahamas, are also ideal for fishing (bonefishing especially).

The Exumas stretch from Beacon Cay in the north to Sandy Cay in the south. The Exuma National Land and Sea Park, protected by The Bahamas National Trust, encompasses much of the coastline.

The park is accessible only by boat and is one of the major natural wonders and sightseeing destinations, with an abundance of undersea life, reefs, blue holes, and shipwrecks. Portions of the James Bond thriller Thunderball were filmed at Staniel Cay. Not far from George Town, the largest settlement on Great Exuma, is the rapidly growing Emerald Bay area with the luxurious 5-star condotels at Grand Isle Resort & Spa and the famous Greg Norman Golf Course.

Grand Bahama Island A favorite port of Old World

pirates and modern day rumrunners, Grand Bahama remains largely untouched since its swashbuckling days. Those seeking adventure can explore uncharted primitive forests, scuba dive through prehistoric underwater caverns, or swim side by side with dolphins. Freeport/ Lucaya offers posh resorts with service designed to pamper, splendid

oceanview suites, and nightlife from casinos to musical revues. This tropical metropolis appeals to the sports minded with championship golf, renowned tennis facilities and deep-sea fishing. Discover vibrant island history where remnants of the Arawaks, the native Bahamians, depict the ancient culture that invented the definitive tool for the skilled beach bum: the hammock.

Nassau Captains of all walks of life have

long welcomed the sight of the sheltered harbor in Nassau, the capital of The Bahamas. Parliament Square in downtown Nassau displays the island’s colonial history with the Old World pageantry of the Supreme Court and the traditionally dressed police force. Visitors roam through the straw market filled with handwoven baskets before heading to scores of designer boutiques that house fine jewelry, watches, leather and perfumes. Hit the white sand

beaches for the ultimate in water sports and relaxation. The club scene comes alive with lively cabaret shows and upscale casinos where visitors revel—and gamble—into the night. From steel drum bands to cab drivers, the inherent charm of the locals makes a stay in Nassau truly a pleasure.

Paradise Island Aptly named, this island

treasure attracts the world’s most recognizable people for world-class yachting and casino action, Bahamian style. Stately hotels line the sugary sand beaches and pristine reefs adorn the shallow coastal waters. Though the jet-setters call this port the Monte Carlo of the New World, the island’s West End retains the flavor of its colonial past with white picket fences, exotic flowering plants and breezy front porches. Visitors can slip into the island mentality without leaving luxury behind.

A two-year odyssey that transformed a lanky halfway house runaway named Colton Harris-Moore into an overnight Internet sensation as he

led police on a chase through nine U.S. states, parts of Canada and eventually the northern Bahamas came to a dramatic halt in the waters off Harbour Island, Bahamas, in the early morning hours of July 12. The 19-year-old who became known as the Barefoot Bandit crisscrossed three countries, stole five airplanes, an unknown number of vehicles and at least four boats before being spotted by an alert security director at the exclusive Romora Bay Resort & Marina.

The contrast between the man who captured the imagination of those who followed his derring-do, flying and successfully crash-landing planes, hotwiring boats, crossing open ocean waters, surviving in the woods or breaking into people’s homes, and the place where he was finally caught added to the fascination with the story. Here on this tiny 3x1 mile, glam-packed Harbour Island where CEOs and stars hail each other on golf carts that dominate narrow streets, the bug-bitten and road-weary young man was the celeb du jour. News teams gathered. Peter Van Sant from 48 Hours, Peter Alexander from NBC, a separate crew from Dateline NBC, nearly everyone who was anyone in news descended on the island or sent camera crews. The Barefoot Bandit was caught and news of his capture was as hot as Lady Gaga on a summer night. Behind all the commotion was the quiet Kenny Strachan, a security director who was making his rounds walking between the common grounds near an infinity pool and the dock when he heard a young man’s cry for help. “‘They’re gonna kill me, they’re gonna kill me,” he was yelling, running up the dock toward me,” Strachan said. He was ready to help the fellow in trouble who’d just tied up a boat at the end of the dock crowded with luxury yachts at the marina. “Then I saw he had a knapsack over his shoulder, he was barefoot, they had just put posters up around the island and I recognized him.” The look of recognition sent Harris-Moore fleeing once more, through the bush. He stole another boat nearby from a private dock. Strachan flew into action, contacted everyone he could, despite phone failures —a line had been cut by a work crew on the island that day—followed instructions, disabled the boat the Bandit had come in on, rounded

The end of the long journey for Colton Harris-Moore, known as the Barefoot Bandit, came in darkness in the waters off Harbour Island, Bahamas after an astute security director at the exclusive Romora Bay Resort & Marina spotted the 19-year-old running down the dock, disabled the stolen boat he had tied up and helped organize local police and assist with the capture. Bahamian police were given full marks for handling the case delicately, at one point talking Harris-Moore into dropping the gun he had pointed at his own head.

ound up help from among marina guests,

including those on the M/V Picasso who launched their tender along with another boat, now both laden with police.

By the time the two boats caught up with Harris-Moore, he was aground. The dark had caught up with him in the tricky waters. The long journey was over.

By the next day, Romora Bay was serving Barefoot Bandit drinks and considering re-naming its popular Sunsets Bar and Grill after the 6-foot-5 legend whose luck ran out at this marina where escaping by sea collided with guests’ good deeds and a security guard’s sharp eye. By the next day, a modern inter-island ferry system had announced a new day trip called Get Caught in Harbour Island. There was a sadder side to it, too, and credit goes to Bahamian police who got the Barefoot Bandit to drop the gun he had to his head.

The story had not yet ended for the tri-country adventurer who amassed a following of more than

85,000 fans and friends on Facebook, updating his page from wherever his last venture took him. The irony of his capture where the rich and famous go to play was no less bizarre than the irony of how his run had begun, just a young kid wanting to break out of a halfway house. Now, two years older and a lot more tired,

he was heading back to the U.S. where various jurisdictions would fight over where he would stand trial, keeping the story of the boy who lacked shoes but not courage, alive.

Florida FanfareYour guide to the Sunshine State

Mention Florida and instantly images appear of white-sand

beaches, endless expanses of blue sky, sunshine and sparkling turquoise waters, but Florida offers much more. World-class restaurants, shopping, museums and cultural events fill city streets, while theme parks, nature preserves and historical parks cover more square miles than sunbathers. Here are just a few of the many things to do while visiting Florida.

Fort Lauderdale Often referred to as the “Venice of

America,” Fort Lauderdale is world-renowned as a yachting and sporting destination. Boating enthusiasts enjoy the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, one of the biggest in the world. Water lovers will also delight

in water skiing, kite surfing, canoeing and kayaking, while landlubbers will revel in hiking, biking and fishing. Fort Lauderdale’s diverse ecosystems provide a magical world of flora and fauna. Scuba Diving magazine has named Fort Lauderdale one of America’s “Best Dive Destinations” and “Best Overall Value” for diving. For those who enjoy a more leisurely day, Las Olas Boulevard provides boutiques and art galleries, world-class cuisine, sidewalk cafes and jazz houses. Tucked away in the heart of the city is the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District, a delightful assortment of shopping, dining, waterfront parks and major cultural attractions.

Key West Visitors to Key West can pet a shark, tour a cemetery, visit Hemingway’s former

home with a wall dedicated to portraits of his wives and lovers, or experience the riches of a spectacular salvage expedition. The island’s beaches offer ample sunning and water sports opportunities, while beneath the surrounding turquoise waters, historic shipwrecks, a living coral reef and a myriad of marine life beckon

www.aircurrentsmagazine.com Volume 11 Issue 2 | 41

underwater exploration. Hardly a weekend goes by without some kind of special event or festival. January brings the Key West Literary Seminar, celebrating the island’s heritage as a writer’s haven. In July, the 10-day Hemingway Days Festival begins with writer’s workshops, costume contests and other activities. In late October, Fantasy Fest features revelry and surprises to the island.

Land lovers can discover the coral reefs without getting their feet wet at the Key West Aquarium, the first tourist attraction in the Keys. And no visit to Key West is complete without viewing a sunset at Mallory Square or atop LaConcha Hotel.

Miami From parks to animals, shopping

to nightlife, you can be sure to find the right activity to fit your personality and budget. Nature lovers will enjoy Everglades National Park, the third largest national park in the continental United States, with 1.5 million acres of rare and beautiful ecosystems. Miami Metrozoo lets you experience the excitement of the world’s jungles with more than 800 animals in a 290-acre habitat. For late-night fun, head for South Beach and Coconut Grove, where you can dance the night away in a trendy nightclub, sample the fare at a world-class restaurant or shop at the stylish boutiques. Check your calendar because Miami also hosts festivals throughout the year, including Taste of the Grove, a food-lover’s paradise, Coconut Grove Arts Festival, for those who are more artistically inclined, and Calle Ocho, an extravaganza of Cuban music, food and dance.

Orlando The Orlando/Kissimmee/Lake

Buena Vista area is home to some of Florida’s best-known attractions. Walt Disney World theme parks guarantee to bring out the child in us all. Adventurous types will want to check out Universal Studios Florida, where they can “ride” their favorite

movies. More thrills can be found at SeaWorld’s newest attraction, Kraken, a floorless roller coaster that plunges underwater. Downtown Orlando boasts Church Street Station with restaurants, shops and games for the whole family. Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven slows you down and offers stunning botanical gardens and Southern belles in billowing skirts. On the water, the action-packed water ski shows are as thrilling as they are entertaining.

Pensacola

Known as the “City of Five Flags,” Pensacola’s history gives tourists the chance to soak in its varied and colorful past. Historic Pensacola Village offers guided tours of exhibits including furnished period houses, museums, and archaeological sites spanning from the earliest Spanish explorers to the 1920s. The downtown area burgeons with art galleries, theatrical and symphony performances, big-name musical stars, and delightful restaurants and shops ranging from down-home to exquisite. To the west is the Naval Air Station, which boasts the world-renowned National Museum of Naval Aviation and hosts the Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show each November. Boasting some of the most pristine white sands in the state, Pensacola’s breathtaking beaches offer the perfect setting for a seaside vacation. Nearby Milton offers opportunities for camping, canoeing, kayaking and tubing along its crystal-clear spring-fed waters.

Tallahassee

With its rolling hills, canopied roads of moss-draped oaks, and Southern charm, Tallahassee defies the stereotypes most people hold when it comes to Florida. With the Gulf 25 miles away and the Georgia border only 14 miles to the north, Tallahassee is strategically located in the foothills of the Appalachians and at the juncture of Florida’s Panhandle and peninsula.

Magnificent plantation houses, the newly restored capital building and the Museum of Florida History reflect the city’s deep-rooted history. Florida State University, home of the Seminoles, is the second largest university in the state. The city is brimming with school spirit, and football season is a colorful and exciting time to visit when there is a game in town. With college students around, a thriving nightlife is far from lacking. But if a leisurely day about town is more your style, you will find every sort of shopping, dining and interesting things to see.

Tampa Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is

335 acres of family adventure, combining world-class animal habitats with heart-stopping rides. The exotic African theme whisks you to another land as easily as the roller coasters whisk you into the air. For something different, try Duck Tours of Tampa Bay, a narrated 80-minute land and sea tour in a genuine WWII amphibious vehicle. Wander along beautiful Tampa Bay, with shops, restaurants and sights for visitors of all ages. Be sure to stop by historic Ybor City, restored to its old-time charm. Watch Cuban cigar makers roll a stogie in Ybor Square,

and dance the night away along La Séptima.

West Palm Beach Featuring historic architecture and

a variety of restaurants, West Palm Beach’s downtown makes it one of the most unforgettable cities in South Florida. Check out the first signature restaurant of Bravo! Network’s “Top Chef” star and Palm County native Stephen Asprinio—Forté di Asprinio. Featuring modern Italian cuisine and

500 bottles of wine, the restaurant is already creating buzz on a national level.

Those wishing to venture further afield can take a drive on the wild side through Lion Country Safari, one of the world’s first cageless zoos. For the less daring, the Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park is the number one family attraction in Palm Beach County. This 23-acre zoological garden is home to more than 400 animals from around the world.

Shhhh. That’s the silence that signals a new age has arrived at sea. The environmentally-friendly technology that led to the hybrid’s

popularity on the road is leading to a new era in yachting, the non-diesel-belching hybrid luxury vessel. The era of the hybrid yacht is dawning and when it breaks, it will revolutionize the way people boat. In time, the thriving business of slating the never-ending thirst of inboard and outboard engines will be replaced by an insatiable appetite for battery banks. Admittedly, the pace of hybrid yacht production is slower than it is for hybrids that replace fuel-guzzling autos and SUVs. Perhaps the demand has not kicked in the way it has for cars because those who can afford megayachts are not as concerned with cost of fuel. But there may just be a better reason than wanting to save a dime on a gallon of gas to bet that hybrid horsepower will someday very soon be fueling yacht growth and that’s the silence. It’s powerful.

The positive plug for a hybrid sea brand is based on absolute scientific analysis. I had a ride on the first hybrid luxury yacht and I liked it. A lot. And I boat. A lot.

The vessel was a Mochi Craft Long Range 23, built by Ferretti. The 23 refers to meters, translated into non-metric that means a smidgeon over 75 feet in length. At $5.2 million, it has many of the finer features you would expect to find in a yacht of that price tag—beautifully finished brightwork, gleaming floors and bulkheads, salon with plush seating, well-equipped galley with stainless steel appliances, master cabin decorated in whites typical of a 5-star hotel suite, forward cabin with soft aquas, built-in sound system throughout, even his and hers heads (bathrooms), hers with a

bidet. And there the similarity with comfortable yachting ends and the future of yachting begins.

On this vessel, Hull #5, and the first one in the Western Hemisphere, the long range version of Ferretti’s respected Mochi Craft can operate either totally on diesel, totally on electrical or a combination. Gliding out of Lyford Cay, we are on electric and it is absolutely silent, even quieter than sailing if only because there is no one at the helm shouting orders. Nor is there any exhaust. No fumes, no sound, no hassle. Cruising the inlet to leave the harbor was like setting off on a magic carpet ride, the sensation of smooth, it was to boating what Belvedere is to vodka. While the silence was thanks to the electrical powering system, the lack of rolling was the result of another revolutionary concept, a new trans-planing hull that reduces by up to half the roll associated with a displacement hull. The design is called FER.WEY, Ferretti Wave Efficient Yacht and with the high freeboard (sides of the hull from waterline to top) it takes a bit of a toll on the sleekness of the lines,

but for the owners or guests, what is sacrificed in looks is more than compensated for in comfort. A second hybrid propulsion system adds to stability and helps deflect the stern-down, digging in jolt normally associated with an increase in speed.

The boat’s quiet purring is part of its eco-friendliness. Luxury yachts that frequent marinas also often stay offshore, near a beautiful beach or in a sheltered bay cove, dropping anchor(s) in a spot that is pristine and promptly revving up a huge, loud generator to keep icemaker, air conditioner, lights and electronics humming. Fine for the passengers onboard who are oblivious to the external sound that their generator is making, but not so good for others at the anchorage or for the marine life. On board the Mochi Craft Long Range 23, tying up at a marina and plugging in to electricity for a few hours can power up the battery bank enough to keep everything operating silently without a diesel generator all night long.

The first ‘Zero Emission Mode’ yacht over 60 feet, the Long Range 23 is also the first to be awarded the Green Star and Clean Energy

Propulsion certification. Every one of its stats is impressive: fuel capacity is 2,061 gallons, water is 528 gallons, engines are two, 550-hp MAN diesels, beam is 20’6”, average cruising speed is about seven knots and fully charged, she can cruise for more than a day on electrical power alone.

For the ordinary passenger fortunate enough to catch a ride on the extraordinary vessel, it’s the yachting version of the Tesla sports

car, both riding the wave of the future.

When I was a kid I fantasized about owning my own island. You know, the quintessential mansion overlooking a sun-drenched ocean and a large

staff to take care of my every whim. It wasn’t until I started growing older that I realized it would probably take trading places with someone like Johnny Depp or Sir Richard Branson to make this dream a reality.

Let’s face it, super exclusive island getaways are for the super rich. But what if I could personally experience living on an exotic island in luxury fit for famous movie stars? I did—for a magical weekend at Bahama Beach Club, a getaway designed to bridge the gap between fantasy and reality.

A little more than an hour’s flight from South Florida and less than a half hour from Nassau, the club is located in Treasure Cay, Abaco. Settled by a group of Loyalists from New York state in the 1800s and never growing much beyond the original thousand who populated the settlement at its highest in the 1790s, Treasure Cay continues to be one of the most pristine, unspoiled tourist destinations in The Bahamas.

Like its Family Island neighbors, the cay has a warm climate, balmy ocean breezes, palm trees and lush vegetation, and an intriguing small town culture. But the cay’s crown jewel is its beach. Bahama Beach Club sits on one of the world’s most stunning beaches. It was rated “The Best Beach in the Caribbean” by Caribbean Travel and Life magazine and one of the world’s 10 best by National Geographic. Exploring the three-and-a-half mile windswept shore is like walking on fine sugar. At the far end of the beach is a tip known as Sandy Point where even at high tide the water near shore is barely more than ankle deep, making it a great place for toddlers. What I didn’t expect to find walking out further, a half-mile into

a knee-deep, postcard-perfect sea, were delicate white sand dollars literally every other step of the way.

The warm winds of the Gulf Stream keep the water temperature above 72 degrees most of the year. Ideal for boating, the surf at Bahama Beach Club is constantly calm thanks to several nearby islands like No Name Cay and Green Turtle Cay which act as wave barriers. It was a serene boat ride through these very same waters that first lured the owner of the club to the cay, an enticement so strong that he immediately quit his news anchor career in Florida to open the resort.

By design, the commanding ocean view is shared by every villa on the property. What makes each luxury condominium unique is the signature décor of the various homeowners. From tropical chic to streamlined modern, guests are able to select from an assortment of fully-furnished styles of 1-bedroom, 3-bedroom, 4-bedroom and 4-bedroom-plus-loft villas ranging from $350-$910 per night, depending on villa size and season. My family and friends stayed in a three-bedroom villa outfitted with wicker fixtures, palm trees and sage-toned walls. The home away from home had the look and feel of a tropical retreat but with all the comforts of the digital world—flat screen TVs in every room, a DVD player with surround sound, cable TV and an iPod deck to play music through the condo’s Bose stereo. Free long distance in-room calls to virtually anywhere in the world is a bonus feature and free Wi-fi is accessible throughout the resort.

Treasure Cay also offers a pleasant escape from one of city life’s biggest hassles —traffic jams. Golf carts are the main means of transportation, so much so that there’s a drive-in movie night just for cart drivers. The carts (most of them rented from Cash’s Carts) and bicycles make for a safe stroll to the marina or grocery store and the relative absence of cars, trucks and honking horns or even a traffic light adds to the peacefulness.

Golfers will be relieved to know there is a 72-par, 18-hole championship golf course designed by Dick Wilson in walking distance from the resort. Once ranked the “#1 Golf Course in the Bahamas” by Golf Digest, it features a front nine that runs parallel with the ocean and duck ponds on the tighter back nine.

There is certainly no shortage of tropical beverages to rehydrate yourself after a long swim at the club’s outdoor bar and grill and beachfront dining is world class. Fresh local ingredients, including pineapple and conch, paired with unparalleled ocean views make any traveler feel as though they’re living the lifestyle of the rich and famous. This is where we fell absolutely, adoringly in love with Treasure Cay. Try a different table every night, with a slightly different vantage point, and you can’t go wrong—especially when the live band is playing.

Private island homes are no longer the exclusive playground for dot com moguls and trophy wives. Today, a luxury island escape is just an easy option for almost everyone. Powdery sandy beaches, a championship golf course, the conch fritter delicacy and, for the truly adventurous, a dive with dolphins. In days gone by, business trips rarely allowed time for spa treatments. And the last thing a visitor on a beach

vacation wanted was to connect with the office. But thanks to external technology and self-imposed demands, to business centers in seaside resorts and go-anywhere offices like BlackBerrys, mixing business with pleasure is the vacation de jour. So it’s surprising how few resorts cater to both. Business hotels all too often remain bland, beige boxes while strictly-vacation resorts get glitzier.

Yet a little over 50 miles from West Palm Beach, Florida lies a place where corporate travelers, honeymooners and families can all find perfection. Lazy days on the beach, international business meetings and serious golf are all available thanks to the twin pleasures of the Reef Village and Radisson hotels at Our Lucaya Resort on Grand Bahama Island.

The Radisson Grand Bahama Island Our Lucaya Resort, a AAA Four Diamond property, was named one of Forbes magazine’s “Top 400 Hotels” and Reef Village Grand Bahama Island Our Lucaya Resort was named the best beach resort for families in the May 2008 Parents Magazine.

It’s easy to see why. Maybe the 7.5 acres of white sand beaches, sparkling blue waters and lush, tropical surroundings was the deciding factor. Maybe it’s the not one, but two 18-hole championship golf courses, the Lucayan Country Club course and the Reef Club course. Or maybe it’s the 14 taste-tempting restaurants, lounges and coffee bars that give the edge to Our Lucaya. Truth be told, it’s not any one of these reasons—it’s all of these reasons. Every element of Our Lucaya

is award-worthy on its own, but when all the elements are brought together the destination becomes magical.

The resort ably caters to all manner of clientele. With its children’s pool and award winning Camp Lucaya playground, babysitting services and plethora of youth activities the Reef Village attracts families and young vacationers. With a full-fledged business Center, large and small

meeting spaces and spa facilities the Radisson caters more to the business and corporate traveler. Both hotels offer a wide range of water and land-based activities and full service accommodations.

No resort would be complete without a wide variety of cuisine to easily satisfy the discerning palate. Those opting for elegant dining can visit Churchill’s Chop House for exquisite steak and seafood. The Willy Broadleaf restaurant offers guests a broad hot breakfast buffet or a la carte menu. For more casual fare visit the Sugar Mill Pool Bar & Grill or the buffet at Barracuda’s. Those guests who wish to be a little rebellious and swim after eating, ignoring their mother’s advice, can patron the poolside Hammerhead’s or Waves bars and grills.

Aside from ocean-based activities including snorkeling, diving and boating, there are plenty of land-based activities to satisfy. Grand Bahama Island has more golf courses per capita than any other Bahamian island and Our Lucaya features two of the best. The Dick Wilson-designed Lucayan Country Club course features nearly

7,000 yards of elevated greens and tree-lined “doglegs,” or sharp turns on the course. The Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed The Reef Club course is more water based, as the name implies, and features many water hazard designs to challenge even seasoned golfers. The two courses have been host to numerous prestigious international golf competitions, including the Caribbean Golf Classic and Senior PGA Tours.

For a different kind of ball game guests can jump onto one of the four internationally styled tennis courses at The Radisson Grand Bahama Island Our Lucaya Resort. Play on natural grass, a la Wimbledon or the hard surface of ‘Decoturf’ as used in the U.S. Open. Test your skills on a Red Clay court, imported straight from Paris or play on the Australian Open-styled Rebound Ace surface, made from recycled Nike shoes.

After a long day of athletic prowess or an even longer day of corporate meetings pamper yourself with a well-deserved visit to the 25,000-square-foot, three-storey Radisson WORKOUT powered by Reebok Spa

& Fitness Center. Enjoy a soothing massage with indigenous herbs and plants, a lime-infused skin exfoliation, a Moor-mud bathing ritual or a Swedish or Hot Stone massage. Wash your cares away (as well as the mud) with a seven-headed Figi shower or enjoy the sweet flavors of the Eminence edible-facial line. Senses also features a fully stocked gym with free weights, strength conditioning and cardio

equipment as well as bootilicious, spinning, aerobics and Pilates classes.

There are daily flights from southern Florida to Grand Bahama Island, most taking less than an hour. You can find Our Lucaya at www.ourlucaya.com or via telephone at (242) 373 1444 for the Reef Village or (242) 373 1333 for the Radisson. Book your relaxing vacation or business trip today, and don’t be afraid to mix the two.

After a day spent basking in the sun, you can wash your cares away in the sensuous free standing bathtub illuminated by soft chandelier lighting or step into the large walk-in shower boasting oversized jet shower heads and a sitting bench for a spa-like experience. A round decorative porthole window invites sunlight, sunsets and star gazing, adding to the essence of seaside serenity.

wood decking, the living is laid back from sun up until sun down, and then some.

The beauty of this quaint 37-room boutique hotel lies in the understated elegance that transcends the property, set along the notorious pink sand three mile stretch of beach recognized as the most beautiful beach in the Caribbean by the Travel Channel, and consistently voted as one of the top five beaches in the world.

From family to celebrity friendly, a steady stream of vacationers, honeymooners, love birds, fishing buddies, and groups looking to spend quality time away seek out this glorious destination year round. With weather

There are restaurants around the world where the memory of being there lives on long after the occasion for going is forgotten. Was it a birthday,

anniversary? Was there a champagne lobster or was the champagne a Cristal? The details seem moot, what you remember is how you felt. The moment, a particular mellowness, you could almost reach out and touch.

At Luciano’s of Chicago, what I remember is gentle air on bare arms, the sun setting over the harbour, small boats that bobbed gently at anchor, larger sailboats slowly turning on masthead lights as the full moon rose, waking from a slumber and growing so big it looked like it was showing off all it had. Maybe it was because Luciano’s was participating in the Great Bahamian Seafood & Wine Festival last week and the menu was so rich in seafood it all but floated, but there was something special about this historic home-cum-harbourfront prima dining donna that night.

Located in a stately two-story structure that was once the residence of the first and only premier of The Bahamas (they were called Prime Minister after that), Luciano’s hugs Nassau harbour, its broad expanse of patio, part under private pergolas, as popular for lunch as it is for dinner. Dining at Luciano’s is discovering what dining settings in The Bahamas should be about. Candlelit tables dressed in sharp white with hot blue touches dot the terrace. Across the way, megayachts and the Atlantis skyline create a postcard backdrop. A jet ski goes by, the rider a local architect in collared shirt, rolled up sleeves, a backpack on his back. A well-heeled couple is not too proud to stroll over to the edge of the patio and ask a waiter to take a photo of them. They pose, then move in closer and look at each other in a way that says they, too, want to remember this early summer night of the late sun setting and the full moon rising.

dining

The evening began with a glass of house white, a refreshing and totally pleasing Gran Sasso Chardonnay, light enough to be closer to a Pinot Grigio than a traditional Chardonnay, perfect for the season. The wine list is unpretentious and sufficient, ranging in offerings from a reasonably priced Montepulciano at $34 per bottle to a Silvio Grass at $210.

Freshly baked bread served with Luciano’s homemade eggplant, zucchini and red sauce Caponata, a fine olive oil and always ready finely grated Parmesan was worth the self-indulgence accompanied by a silent promise to work off the calories tomorrow.

The seafood special appetizer was conch cakes with wonderfully fresh baby greens and Rosa Aoili, the main course a generous portion of pan-seared grouper al picatta with a variety of crisply steamed vegetables, including broccoli, green beans and summer squash. The lemon sauce reduction was just buttery enough, stopping short of forcing the mouth to do that funny half-grimace when there is too much of a good thing. But the piece de resistance was a warm chocolate rum raisin bread pudding with caramel sauce, served with rum raisin ice cream and, I kid you not, Mark. Mark is a waiter who sings. Serves the dessert and falls to his knees to croon “You are so beautiful” to whatever woman is at the table. Corny as it sounds, it works. The dessert was as memorable as any I have ever had and the pudding was good, too.
