Aim Of Summer Training

• Provide instruction and opportunities to develop advanced knowledge and skills in specialized activities

• To develop instructors and leaders for these activities• To provide further opportunities to employ the general knowledge and

skills obtained through the sqn program• Due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, the summer training program

was required to be modified. In order to operate safely in the COVID-19 environment, a variety of delivery methods will be used, reduced number of in-person CTC courses, billets and CTCs operating during summer 2021.

• At any time during the planning and execution of summer training 2021, changes in the COVID-19 environment may dictate the necessity to alter, cancel, or delay training opportunities.

In person opportunities for Air Cadets are limited to the following, and are subject to change, as the pandemic changes. Although they are currently being planned, and are hoping to be conducted, this can change at any time. Your patience is appreciated.

Although they are currently being planned, and are hoping to be conducted, this can change at any time. Your patience is appreciated. Withe virtual training there will likely be more opportunities and more positions offered. Cadets may apply for up to 7 Virtual CTC Courses.

In Person Training Courses

Note: Level 3 Qualified means the cadet has completed level 3 or greater this training year

This course provides cadets an opportunity to develop the fundamentals of aerospace, airport operations and aircraft manufacturing and maintenance.

Activities include:• aerospace, • aerodrome operations, and • aircraft manufacturing and

maintenance.


Basic Courses DescriptionsBasic Survival (Virtual CTC)

This course provides cadets an opportunity to develop aircrew survival skills.

Activities include:• field training, • navigation, and • ground search and rescue.

• Each provincial/territorial Air Cadet League conducts a file review and interviews (Selection Boards)

• Cadets must submit an application including a narrative, school report and other documents based on the course applying for (Not Required for Virtual CTC)

• Gliding and Power applicants must pass the CAF Flying Qualifying Exam and be in possession of a valid Medical Category 3 Certificate from Transport Canada

National CoursesDescriptions

Advanced Aviation Technology – Airport Operations(Virtual CTC)

This course is a six-week course that introduces Cadets to the various components of operating an airport.

Activities include: • airside operations, • meteorology, • navigation, • air traffic services,

• ground services, and safety.


Advanced Aerospace(St Jean CFTC)

This course provides cadets an opportunity to develop as a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to be an instructor and team leader for aerospace activities within the Air Cadet Program.

Activities include: • instructional technique, • first aid, • astronomy, • orbital mechanics, and • model rocketry.


Glider Pilot Scholarship(Gimli CFTC)

Develop, train and obtain a Transport Canada Glider Pilot’s License.


Power Pilot Scholarship(Various)

Develop, train and obtain a Transport Canada Private Pilot’s license.


Military Band Training - General(Virtual CTC)

This course provides cadets an opportunity to participate in music training and military band activities, to prepare them to support squadron music programs.

Activities include:• maintaining a primary instrument, • music theory, • demonstrating rhythm skills, • executing drill as a member of a

band, and • performing ensemble music as a

member of a band.


Pipe Band Training - General(Virtual CTC)

This course provides cadets an opportunity to participate in music training and pipe band activities, to prepare them to support squadron music programs.

Activities include:• highland dance, • maintaining a primary instrument, • music theory, • executing drill as a member of a

band, and • performing ensemble music as a

member of a band.

Other Virtual Training Courses• Cadet Cyber Training

– This training helps cadets develop the first level of Cyber skills and will compete in an online competition at the end of the course.

• Web Programing– This training will help cadets develop the skills on simple website

development, app development and virtual platforms (Minercraft)

• Fieldcraft Engineering– Training will include various knots & lashings and how they can be

applied to construct various useful items for field living. Projects may include building lanyards, tables, benches and lean-to-shelters.

Other Virtual Training Courses Continued• GPS Navigation and Geocaching

– Training will cover topics such as Navigation, GPS Usage, Safety and Geocaching website resources. This course may require the use of a smart phone as a GPS device to navigate to hidden “caches” that are publicly accessible through the sport of Geocache.

• Build a Rope Bridge, Boat, Airplane– This training will challenge cadets design and engineering skills.

Cadets will learn to build these projects and put them through various tests and re development.

• Pleasure Craft Operator– This course will provide cadets the knowledge to attempt the

Pleasure Craft Operator Competency qualification (Boating Licence) which will occur at the end of the course.

Other Virtual Training Courses Continued• Restricted Operators Certificate – Marine

– This course will provide the cadets with the knowledge needed to obtain their Restricted Radio Operators Certificate – Marine. Topics will include Identifying voice procedures, Utilize distress, urgency and safety calling procedures and Describe the Global Maitime Distress and Safety System.

• Fitness and Sport– Training in this course will cover aerobics, cardio, flexibility strength

and personal safety during exercise.

• World of Cadets– This course will help cadets see the different cadet programs out in

the world and virtually visit, via online tours, the countries and locations where the international cadet programs are.

Other Virtual Training Courses Continued

• Cadet Correspondent Training– Cadets will learn the skills to become a Cadet Correspondent. Topics in

this course will include how to connect with local media, effectively use social media and become a storyteller at you squadron.

• Leadership– This course will walk cadets through the planning of an activity such

as a hike for their family or group of friends. Topics to include Time management, planning and preparation and risk management.

• Effective Communication– This course will provide cadets with the skills needed to help

Overcome stage fright, crack a joke in front of a group and refine your speech writing skills.

Remaining Virtual Courses

The Remaining Virtual Courses do not have descriptions available at this time.

Staff CadetStaff cadet Positions will be available in support of both CTC (in-person) and CTC (virtual).

CTC (In-Person) Positions :

a. Training. The primary responsibility of Training Staff Cadets is to implement training. They act as division/platoon/flight staff and implement and supervise course training from the time the cadets arrive until their departure;

b. Support. The primary responsibility of Support Staff Cadets is to assist and support the implementation of training. Support Staff cadets fill various roles

including Training Centre Operations, Canteen, Administration, Public Affairs etc;

c. RCSU (NW) has been allocated Staff Cadet positions at the following CTC (inperson):(1) St-Jean CFTC;(2) HMCS ONTARIO;(3) Connaught CTC;(4) Mountain View CFTC;(5) Rocky Mountain CTC;(6) HMCS QUADRA; and(7) Vernon CTC.

Staff Cadet ContinuedCTC (Virtual) Positions:To be eligible for a staff cadet position with a CTC (virtual), cadets must have access to and use of a computer and internet connection during daytime hours for their entire contract.

a. Training. In a similar fashion as at CTC (in-person), Training staff cadets will implement the virtual training programs. They will act as divisional/platoon/flight staff cadets, deliver on line classes, assist and maintain communication with their assigned cadets and adult staff members.

b. Support. The CTC (virtual) has a structure similar to that of the traditional CTC. In order for training to be delivered, there are a number jobs in the back ground that must be completed for things to run smoothly. These include:

– Cadet Correspondents, administration clerks, Assistant Information Technology Coordinators and Training Centre Cdt CWO.

Where is summer trainingconducted?

Vernon CTC (Vernon, BC)

• Located in the interior of BC on the north end of the Okanagan valley in the city of Vernon.

• Most cadets are housed dormitory style in permanent barracks with all bedding provided. Some cadets will be housed in 6 man tents (CF Modular) with electricity.

• Additional facilities include: games room, canteen, internet cafe, cadet bank, church, medical inspection room

Where is summer trainingconducted?St Jean CFTC

(Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC)

• Located at the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu Regional Airport• Most cadets are housed dormitory style in permanent barracks with all

bedding provided.• Additional facilities include: canteen, cadet bank, medical inspection room

Where is summer trainingconducted?

Virtual CTC

• Located where ever you can connect to the internet• Cadets must have a computer, laptop or mobile device that has internet

capability and a reliable internet connection in order to participate in Virtual CTC Courses.

Participation Limitations

• Cadets who have not returned their Annual Verification Form or Detailed Health Questionnaire if applicable will not be eligible to attend any In-Person Activity including CTC.

• Parents/Guardians may contact the squadron at [email protected] if they are not sure if any participation limitations exist for their cadet.

• Participation Limitations are assigned by the Regional Medical Liaison Officer based on the information provided in the Detailed Health Questionnaire.

Participation Limitations

The following participation limitations prevent cadets from attending any CTC:

• “cadet cannot participate in any RDA or CTC course or may not participate in training or activities with meals”;

• “unable to attend overnight activities”;

• “unable to participate in drill and parades; or unable to take part in a group activity.”

Participation Limitations continuedThe following participation limitations may prevent cadets from attending any CTC. Cadet corps staff are to ensure they brief parents and cadets on the day to day routines of a CTC (in- person)/CFTC and the expectations of participating in an online/virtual course to ensure a cadet will be successful:

a. may be unable to do significant classroom work or studies;

b. may choose not to participate in certain activities;

c. may participate in physical activities at own pace and duration;

d. may require close supervision;

e. may require extra assistance for daily activities;

f. may require extra assistance/direction in complex and non-routine tasks; or

g. may require special care during overnight activities – verify with cadet.

Participation Limitations continuedAdditional Participation Limitations exist for the Survival Instructor Course:

(1) Must be within 30 minutes of physician services;

(2) Cadets with severe nut allergies (MRE/IMO are the main

source of food and cannot be guaranteed to be nut free);

(3) Unable to carry a rucksack or lift loads; and

(4) Unable to participate in land based activities at high

altitude (e.g. mountain activities).

Who conducts and supervises the courses?

• Members of the Cadet Organisation and Administration Service (COATS) including Cadet Instructor Cadre Officers, and Civilian Instructors, Regular Force, Primary Reserve members, and civilian contractors

• Senior cadets are also employed as staff cadets to assist with supervision and instruction

• The ratio of adult supervisor to cadet is approximately 1:10

Cadets: What will life be like?

• Close quarters with cadets from all over Canada• Meals in mess halls• Busy training days• “Down time” in the evenings• Home sickness / calling home• Personal hygiene (care for yourself)• Laundry and uniform care• Make great friendships• Learn fantastic skills• Receive training bonus (approx $60/week)

Parents: What to expect?

• May receive anguished calls or texts from your home sick cadet• Best advice: TRUST the staff at the CTC to take good care of your cadet –

do not try to interfere• Leave Passes / visitation is granted at specific times only so as not to

interfere with training – CALL AHEAD• If you’ve been doing your cadet’s laundry and ironing – STOP! They must

do it themselves at the CTC• Management of their training bonus/finances

How are cadets selected?

• Cadets submit their list of choices to the sqn staff• The sqn staff must create applications in Fortress (a digital database)• Cadets and parents need to be aware that medical/participation

limitations (including allergies and asthma) may prevent or limit selection for CTC courses

• Incomplete personal or medical information in Fortress can also prevent or delay selection

How are cadets selected?

• The sqn CO reviews each cadet’s application and prioritizes them based on attendance, merit and level of participation in sqn activities and other factors

• Cadets are course loaded by RCSU using the priority list as a guideline, however, there are limited positions available

• Sqns are notified of cadet selections

Not all cadets will get the opportunity to attend summer training. Selection is based on performance at the Sqn.

Completing the Application

Every year cadets are not selected because of incomplete information in Fortress. Please read the application thoroughly. Here are some specific items to pay particular attention to:

Medical Health ChangesIf your medical information has changed you will need to fill out a Detailed Health Questionnaire. The medical information must be the most current available.

Application due date?

Sqn Deadline: 12 Feb for In-Person and Staff Cadet, 26 Feb for VirtualSqn will set their own deadline prior to the RCSU deadline in order to allow time for the staff to prioritize and enter the applications into Fortress. Applications submitted after this date will be placed at the bottom of the CO's priority list

RCSU Deadline: 15 Feb for In-Person and 1 Mar for VirtualAny applications entered into Fortress after this date will still be considered, however, they will be placed at the bottom of the priority list

What happens when I have been selected?

• Sqn staff will notify you of your selection and present you with an “Offer of Participation”

• Both the cadet and the parent must sign the offer

• The Sqn staff will keep a copy of the Offer, and the cadet must bring a copy to the CTC

What happens when I have been selected?

• Sqn staff will submit your answer (accept or decline) into Fortress

• Travel Orders and Joining Instructions will be emailed directly to the email address on file in Fortress. Please ensure your correct email address is provided to the sqn

Completing the Offer of Participation Form

• It is extremely important that you review all the information on this form to make sure it is correct. Make any corrections necessary.

• Ensure that all other sections of the form are completed including:– Leave pass restrictions– Alternate Family or Friend Contact– Cadet signature– Parent Signature

How do cadets get to and from the training centres?

• All transportation is organized and paid for by DND • Cadets may travel by bus, commercial air, or DND air• Cadets are escorted or met on all legs of their journey when travelling in

large groups. For smaller groups adult escorts will be based on location and duration

• If parents request special transportation arrangements, (or RTU), they may be financially responsible

• The dates listed are course dates and cadets may travel up to two days prior and following the course dates
