1 GENERAL

1 General

1.1 General System DescriptionAIR Connect is a compact, lightweight and rugged device wirelessly connecting Apple® iOS®- orAndroid-devices to aircraft systems.AIR Connect creates a IEEE802.11 b/g wireless network (WiFi®) and transmits received RS232data via the TCP/IP protocol. Many Apps are capable of displaying and using such data. Examplesfor data are current GPS-position, pressure altitude, traffic or engine data.It features one central Power/Data connector (D-SUB 9) and a standard SMA antenna connectorincluding a small quarter-wave WiFi® antenna. AIR Connect is supplied by a DC source in therange of 8V to 32V and typically consumes less than 100mA. It can be easily mounted on manyplaces inside the aircraft, remote antenna options with cables are available.

2 INSTALLATION

2.2.3 Wiring

The electrical installation has to be undertaken according to the guidelines and regulationsapplicable to the specific aircraft type. When uncertain as to how to perform any aspect ofthe installation, you should consult with an aeronautical engineer or an aircraft maintenancefacility. In all cases the installation is to be performed only with expert advice in accordancewith this guidance.

A voltage supply with a current limiting safety device must be secured, to cut the powerin the event of an overload in the voltage supply. The safety device must be markedclearly, e.g. ”AIR Connect”.

AIR Connect is powered through Pins 5 (GND) and 7 (DC-in) of its D-SUB 9 connector. Pleasemake sure to carefully comply with the power requirements of the device. The use of aviation grade wires is recommended. Please consult the aircrafts maintenance docu-mentation for information on required wire specifications.

2.2.4 Power Consumption and Requirements

Item ValueInput Voltage Range 6V to 32V DCRecommended Fusing 2.0A CBTypical Power Consumption 80mA at 12V DCPower Requirements <1.5W at 12V DC

Take care that the power supplied has the correct polarity, otherwise damage to thedevice may occur.

2.3 Mechanical Installation

Aircraft instruments, controls and safety features such as canopy jettison or emer-gency exit must never be disturbed by the way AIR Connect is installed.

AIR Connect may be installed inside the aircrafts instrument compartment or in any other suitablearea. Cables must not be cracked or installed under tension. Adequate space must be left for thecable connectors. AIR Connect should be located at least 30cm away from the magnetic compass. The metallic housing is not watertight and users should avoid the ingress of solid particles and liq-uids. Should the unit get moist, it must be completely dried prior to further use. If the unit becomeswet, it may be permanently damaged and rendered unusable. Should the unit be suddenly cooledthis may result in the formation of condensation.

• Connecting mobile-devices - Power up AIR Connect- Enter main Device-Settings App.- go to Wi-Fi and make sure Wi-Fi is activated- in the Choose a Network list the SSID of yourAIR Connect device should appear. The SSID isalways named WiFly-GSX or WiFly-EZXfollowed by a two digit code.- tap on the WiFly-GSX/EZX -Network to create aconnection

Make sure your device remains connected, in some cases open WiFi-Networks are joinedautomatically which causes AIR Connect to loose connection. Activate Ask to Join Networksin iOS® to avoid this.

4.2 Using Data In iOS®- or Android AppsConnecting Apps differs from App to App. Make sure to note the four-digit pin-code printed on topof the AIR Connect unit as this is required to connect to any App. As an example the followingsection shows how to connect AIR Avionics Apps.
