Year Group Information

EYFS What a brilliant start to school all of the children have had. We have been so impressed with how independently the children are coming into school, and how settled they are during the day. They have made many new friends and have been very busy learning the expectations and routines of the unit. We have made a start on our ‘Three Little Pigs’ topic, looking at 2D shapes, and exploring which sounds we already know. We have had our first welly walk too. Please can we ask parents/carers to stand back from the hall doors at drop off and pick up, so we can clearly see you all and ensure a safe handover at both times. Thank you for your cooperation. Year 1 The children have settled wonderfully and have been working incredibly hard. We have been looking closely at numbers and using outdoor resources, Numicon, pictures and songs to help strengthen our understanding of numbers to 10 and 20. We have already had some amazing shooting sheriffs! In literacy, Binky Bear has been up to some mischief and the children have used their imaginations to help get him in all sorts of trouble. The year group has worked hard on letter and number formation and we are incredibly pleased with how hard the children have worked. Please let us know if you have any spare time to listen to readers, any help is greatly appreciated Year 2 The children have been having great fun hunting for a mysterious little creature on the school grounds and although they found evidence of the creature’s den and the mischief that it has been up to they couldn’t find him! As a result, the children set about designing traps to capture it this week and when that didn’t work they decided to write their own capturing potions and are hoping these will be successful. In maths, the children have been ordering numbers and thinking about whether number sequences are increasing or decreasing in value. The children have also started to find out more about the Solar System this and have become experts about one aspect of it. We have booked our trip to the Winchester Science Centre and will be going on Monday 11th November a letter with further details will be sent home with your child shortly. Year 3 The children have been working very hard in Year 3 and the teachers are so proud of the way the children have settled in. The children are thoroughly enjoying our Topic. We were fortunate enough to welcome Magnus McCabe (Harris in Year R’s Dad) who came to speak to Year 3 about growing up in the Benbecula in the Hebrides - thank you. We have been writing travel brochures about the Isle of Coll, exploring inference questions linked to Katie Morag stories and locating countries, counties and capital cities in the UK on maps. In maths, we continue to cover place value and are using dienes, place value counters and place value arrow cards to support this learning. In art, we will be painting Isle of Coll landscapes onto pebbles. We would be extremely grateful if you could provide a hand sized, smooth pebble for your child for Thursday 3rd October. Thanks for your continued support. Year 4 The children have fully immersed themselves into our WW2 topic with the evacuation to St Paul’s church and the Hobgoblin theatre and drama experiences. They have experienced what happened to children from large cities during WW2, who had to be evacuated to the countryside, from what they would have packed, meeting their host families and what they would do for entertainment. In literacy, the children have written letters to Dad linking this to our class read ‘The Lion and the Unicorn.’ In maths, we are continuing to explore place value, ordering numbers and placing numbers on a blank number line. Times Table Rockstars has now been updated with your child assigned to their new class. We have sent home logins in homework books this week. Year 5 The children have been working extremely hard in Year 5; we are all suitably impressed with their attitude towards

learning so far. In maths, we have been exploring and rounding very large numbers up to 1,000,000. We have also been

looking at negative numbers and thinking about when we need to use these in the real world. We received a mysterious,

empty package, which was supposed to contain a prototype from America. We decided to write a letter to the sender to

investigate what may have happened to the prototype. Our class book, The Templeton Twins, may contain some clues.

In RE, we have looked where Buddhism all began and linked this to a range of art activities. Twelve children were

randomly selected to attend a kayaking session provided by Sparsholt College. Although it is a shame we cannot take

everybody, there are enough extra curricular activities for all the children to have an opportunity to partake in at some

stage throughout the year. Thanks for your continued support.

Danone County Finals Football Tournament Congratulations to our Year 5 and 6 girls football team who took part in the Danone County Finals football tournament at Toynbee School last Thursday. They started slowly, drawing their first match, but soon hit their stride winning every other match in the first round to top their group. This took them straight to the final and, after a tense 0-0 draw came an even tenser penalty shoot out - which they won! Their reward and next challenge, the regional qualifiers, representing Winchester and Eastleigh against Hampshire on 3rd October, we wish you lots of luck!

Year Group Information

Year 6 Another week has flown past with many exciting projects on the go and lots of new learning underway. We have moved

on to addition and subtraction in maths including decimals and negative numbers, calculating intervals across zero. In

Literacy, the children have written some amazing complaint letters from various coloured felt tip pens! They will be

completing these this week and typing them up for final publishing over the next few days. We are looking forward to

our trips to St Cross Water Meadows next Thursday and Friday; please could we ask that all permission slips and

donations are returned as soon as possible.

Also, thank you to those who signed up to the Birthday Book Club scheme, you have provided at least 50 new books for school in the process! Our next big event is the popular Family Games night on the 4th October, in school from 5.15 – 6.45pm. KS2 children can come with friends but KS1 children should be accompanied by a parent/carer. Games TBC but likely to include a round of bingo, a quiz plus more. If you would like to suggest some please contact us! Food and drink will be available to purchase during the event. Tickets online here Also next Friday there will also be a Halloween Costume swap during the games night. Children outgrow costumes so quickly, why not bring it in and let someone else make use of it. Pick another one up for a small donation. Reuse, rather than recycle! Bring in costumes any time in the upcoming week. Your School Lottery – raise £ for school and be in with a chance of a weekly prize and £25000. This year our wonderful team who have organised the Summer Fete for the past 5 years are stepping down to let others have a go. Thanks again to them all for their wonderful contribution over the years, they have brought a huge amount of joy and money into the school community. This means we have an opportunity for others to help shape the event in the summer. All would be welcome, but it would really suit a group of friends who would like a fun challenge! We can sort all the boring bits (risk assessments, licences etc.) and leave you to the fun, creative side, providing support along the way if required including a helpful handover from the previous team. But without a new team of volunteers this event may not happen. Please let us know ASAP if you’d be interested.

How do I pay?

Details of payment arrangements are included in the Penalty Notice. You must ensure that you include your Penalty Notice reference number on any payment method so the payment can be tracked. Failure to do so may result in the Penalty Notice being recorded as unpaid. Full payment is required within prescribed timescales - see ‘What Happens If I Do Not Pay?’ below . Payment in part or by

instalments is not possible. Late payments will not under any circumstances discharge criminal liability for the offence and you may be liable for prosecution. Any late payments received will be refunded.

What happens if I do not pay? From the date of posting you have up to 21 days to pay £60 or failing that a further 7 days to pay £120. If you fail to make any payment with the 28 days provided the local authority will consider commencing proceedings in the Magistrates’ Court for the original offence of failing to ensure regular attendance under s444 Education Act 1996. If convicted there are a number of possible sentences, including a fine of up to £1,000 (in the case of a prosecution under section 444(1)) or a fine of up to £2,500 and/or a period of up to three months’ imprisonment (in the case of a prosecution under section 444(1A)).

Can I get help if my child is not attending school?

Yes. The school is available to provide advice and support and signpost you to other support agencies in the locality.

Penalty Notices and the Education Act 1996

Section 444A of the Act gives powers to the local authority, and headteachers to issue Penalty Notices in circumstances where it is believed that a person has committed an offence under Section 444(1); that is, where a child fails to attend regularly at their registered school.

What is a Penalty Notice?

A Penalty Notice is a fine which may be issued as an alternative to prosecution. If it is paid it does not require a court appearance and does not result in a criminal record.

Who can be issued with a Penalty Notice?

Where absence warrants the issuing of a Penalty Notice, anyone with Parental Responsibility, or having day to day care of the child can be issued with one Penalty Notice for each of the children with unauthorised absence. If two parents have two children this may result in four Penalty Notices, 2 Penalty Notices per parent.

What if my child has further unauthorised absence from school?

If you pay the Penalty Notice and your child has further unauthorised absences additional legal action may be taken. For example, in the event that a Penalty Notice has previously been served to you due to unauthorised holiday, should your child have any future unauthorised leave this may result in further legal action for you, such as prosecution or an Education Supervision Order.

How is a Penalty Notice issued and how much is the fine?

Penalty Notices are either posted to your home or delivered to you by hand. Each Penalty Notice fine is £60 if paid within 21 days of the date of posting and £120 if paid after this but within 28 days of the date of posting.

When are they issued?

As set down by the Department for Education, Penalty Notices can be issued for unauthorised absence. In Hampshire, Penalty Notices are issued when a pupil has had 10 or more half-day sessions (equivalent

to five school days) of unauthorised absence, in the last 10 school week period.

Unauthorised absence is absence not approved by the school and will

be coded on your child’s attendance record as one of the following:

O – unauthorised absence

U – late after close of registration

G – non-approved leave of absence (holiday).

Persistent Lateness (L) code which reaches the threshold may result in

the issuing of a Penalty Notice.

Is a warning given?

If your child has an ongoing pattern of unauthorised absence then you will normally receive a written warning of the possibility of a Penalty Notice being issued. This warning will advise you about the extent of your child’s absence and warn you that if your child’s attendance does not show a significant improvement and if this improvement is not maintained thereafter, a Penalty Notice may be issued without further warning.

Further support, advice and guidance is available from:

The Department for Education

Hampshire County Council

Is there an appeal process?

There is no statutory right of appeal. Once a Penalty Notice has been issued, it can only be withdrawn if it can be shown that it was issued in error.
