“AIMING HIGH FOR YOUNG PEOPLE”

Dear Parents/carers and young people

You will have seen from our pub-licity that during this month we reached the school`s 20th Anni-

versary of moving into our lovely campus in Damshot Road, changing our name and becoming the family com-munity of SAINT PAUL`S R. C. HIGH SCHOOL. I am so proud of the progress we have made as a school over these years and as an Assistant Head teacher at the time I remember very well the delight the whole school community felt at having this won-derful new opportunity. The building and the grounds remain spectacular – without doubt the best campus in the City – and what is even more exciting in this anniversary year is that our new extension with 14 classrooms and additional changing rooms and toilets at P. E. and a new canopy for one of the playgrounds is due to commence in this summer with a completion date of August 2022.

To celebrate this huge anniversary, we had a fabulous FUN WEEK of activities for all year groups and with the support of our family Partnership were able to give each young person a little goodie bad as well as a day of indoor and outdoor fun activities to enjoy. The weather was also very kind to us! Thank you to everyone for all your warm and strong support over the years – it is an absolute privilege to work for and with this wonderful community and I remain as proud of our school today as I was then all those years ago. Here`s to the next twenty years, everyone!

It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of this summer term. It has been a very different term from what we are used to and on Thursday 10th June we said good bye to our S6

students, with a beautiful, prayerful service and a graduation assembly, some celebrations and a final farewell ovation. Covid has been an extremely challenging time for everyone, but just im-agine if on top of having to cope with a global pandemic you were also doing your SQA qualifi-cations. The way in which our Senior pupils have coped with everything that has been thrown at them has been fantastic, a lesson to us all. They have shown huge resilience, great effort and courage and no shortage of humour, as they have worked their way through their SQA courses. I want to pay tribute to each and every Senior Pupil for all the hard work they have put in, and to wish them all the very best as they move onto the next phase of their education.

I would also, on behalf of our senior students, like to thank all of their teachers. They have been working extremely hard to make sure that every student achieves the best grade they possibly can for the final SQA submissions. I thank them all for the tremendous commitment they have shown to every Saint Paul’s learner throughout this challenging time.

I wish you all a lovely and restful summer holiday and I look forward to seeing all our young people and staff in August for the start of session 2021-2022.

God bless you all. Kind regards

Ms Pierotti

School of Rugby

The School of Rugby has been enjoying returning to curriculum sessions with our

seniors working to complete their Aspiring Performers Programme!

Thanks to Cartha RFC and Glasgow Rugby Development for all their help with coaching and de-

veloping our young players.

The Glasgow

Warriors did a

Q&A with some

of our School of

Rugby pupils.

Lee Jones, Kiran

McDonald and George

Thornton were great virtual

hosts and answered all of our

questions.

SFA Referee

A massive well done to Luke

Moore, John Shaw, Emma

Delaney, Javed Ballantyne

& Kenzie McBride who passed

their SFA refereeing course

and are now qualified referees.

Good Luck

The PE department would like

to thank all the pupils who

have shown great resilience

and adaptability through

what has been a very tough

year. Thank you ☺

Saint Paul’s Mental Health It was Mental Health Awareness Week recently and the theme this year was that of ‘Nature’. Nature was chosen as this year’s theme because going for walks outside was seen as one of the top coping strategies during the pandemic. There are so many benefits to getting involved with nature, and this can be done easily through simple activities like going walks in the parks or growing plants and vegetables, for example. We would

encourage everyone to get out and about whenever they can and stay active. Exercise is proven to im-prove mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, negative moods and self esteem.

Why not combine nature with some daily walks? Use the Strava app and track your mileage. Set yourself some goals to keep physically and mentally healthy.

This has been extremely stressful time for everyone. Remember if you are struggling with anything at the moment and it is making you anxious or stressed, or you need some advice then it is important to you open up to someone. If it’s too hard to do that in person here are some fantastic resources for both pupils and parents/guardians:

500 Mile Challenge Starting on the 15th March, we as a St Paul’s community, started on our 500 mile by Easter challenge using the Strava app. All competitors had to walk or jog as many miles as possible in the 3 weeks leading up to Easter and all mile-age would be added collectively to try and reach 500 miles.

However, we underestimated the St Paul’s community as we bypassed the 500 miles after only 2 weeks! Instead, we reached 1174 miles collectively! Well done to everyone involved and we hope you got both physical and men-tal health benefits from taking part in the chal-lenge. Our individual winner was Ms C Pierotti with an outstanding 172km (106.64 miles)!

It is important to for us all to keep on walking, running and cycling, and set yourself targets to keep active. You'll notice the physical and mental health benefits.

Action for Children

Here is a fantastic resource or parents/guardians high-lighting many of the mental and emotional things that your child could be going through right now. It is easy to use and gives good practical advice on what you can do to help.

The Mix

Here is a great chari-ty that provides free, confidential support for young people under 25 via online, social and mobile.

WE HOPE ALL OUR FAMILIES ARE KEEPING WELL AND LOOKING FORWARD TO A NICE SUMMER. WE WOULD LIKE TO SHARE SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES THE PUPILS HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THIS TERM IN THE RE DEPARTMENT. WE ARE ALSO DELIGHTED TO SHARE OUR INSPIRATION CORNER AGAIN THIS TERM. THE YOUNG PEOPLE CONTINUE TO INSPIRE US AND TEACH US EVERY DAY. MS KELLY AND MR HERON

May is the Month of Mary We were delighted to have our beautiful May Altar back this year and praying our daily Hail Mary to-gether. Many thanks to all pupils and staff who helped to keep the altar looking beautiful all month. A new addition this year was the ‘Stones of Hope’. Each pupil decorated a stone with their hopes/ dreams for the future and they were used to decorate the altar. We all loved the peacefulness and colour this brought to our foyer! Some staff and pupils also contributed to the challenge set by Ur Space team to pray a Hail Mary every day. They were recorded praying the Hail Mary and this was shared on social media networks by Ur Space. It was wonderful to feel part of a bigger community joined in prayer.

Caritas

We are delighted to an-nounce that we continue to have a growing number of pupils gaining the Caritas Award. They worked so hard for this, despite the challenges of lock down, by involving themselves in school activities such as supporting the younger school in their learning; running a lunchtime film club and supporting the faith development of the school community. We are so proud of them all and wish them every success in the future.

Ur Space invited us to take part in the follow-ing competition: “The thirteenth of May is the feast of Saint

Mary Mazzarello, the co-foundress of the Sa-

lesian Sisters, with St John Bosco. This year to

help celebrate the feast we are inviting

schools that we have connections with to en-

courage their pupils to take part in a competi-

tion by either submitting a prayer, or a poem

or a piece of art, inspired by the Life and Spir-

it of St Mary Mazzarello”

We are delighted to announce that Emma in

S2 won a prize for her entry.

Well done EMMA, we are very proud of you!

As part of our reconnecting tasks in April pupils were

asked to write about what they were grateful for, here

is one of the many beautiful responses:

“In my life I am thankful for my family and friends for

being there for me and making me laugh by spending

time with me and helping me when I feel down. I appreciate all my teachers who try to

help me get good grades so I can have a good future.

When learning about the life of St Mary Mazzarello one pupil reflected on her by say-

ing:

”Her life may not have helped her to have a lot of skills but whenever she had an op-

portunity she would always learn something…. Patience”.

Another pupil used the experience to reflect on the work of the Salesians and thank

them:

Dear Salesian Sisters, we appreciate all your work with young people, how much you

help us and care for us. We all really look up to you and we think about how we can

help the young and the old in the future and how we can help the planet. Thank you so

much for all the support and help.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

Well done, to our Shakespeare in Schools group, for their fantastic performance of Antony and Cleopat-ra! Despite all of the delays, we went from Egypt to Rome and back again. Thanks again, to everyone for their invaluable support. We can't wait to begin our new Shakespearian ad-venture, next year!

Congratulation Rebecca Reilly

on passing your Health and

Safety and gaining your CSCS card with First Steps

Future Training! Your ticket to working in your

chosen career in the construction industry. We

are delighted we will be building on our partner-

ship with First Steps Future training in the next

school session and look forward to more Senior

pupils gaining these industry recognised qualifica-

tions to support their pathway

into the construction industry.

Mark Scott Leadership for Life Award

This year we had 9 of our S6 group take part in this prestigious

award. Like so many things that happened during this last year,

the groups had to be inventive and flexible in order to be able to

carry out their community project. One of our groups, working

with pupils from other Glasgow schools took part in a remarkable

project to engage some of the elderly community in a local care

home. The second group worked to improve the appearance of

the S1 yard, repainting and planting

the flowerbeds.

The pupils will take part in an online

awards ceremony on 16th June.

Congratulations to all of them!

Good luck and best wishes to all you wonderful S6 gradu-ates!

Wishing you all the very best in the fu-ture and remember to stay in touch and come back and tell us all how you are getting on in your new destination after St Pauls!

All the best

Miss McManus

An outdoor alternative to promoting H&W in school. These children enjoyed weekly rides on Tom’s

Rickshaw funded by our community partners G53 Together.

The Induction visits from our Primary schools took place on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th June. The visiting P7 pu-pils had the opportunity to participate in two lessons from some of the practical subjects – art and de-sign, drama, music, HFT, science and modern languages. The pupils enjoyed activities such as games and role play in drama and also were very enthusiastic about the tasting sessions in HFT. The P7 pupils met a number of staff in different subject areas as well as staff from the Wider Pupil Support Team. They also enjoyed juice and snacks in the s1 playground and we are now looking forward very much to them joining us on 16th August.

Children from Saint Bernard’s enjoyed tak-ing part in French, Science and Music. Well done!

Children enjoyed Drama, Science and Music on their Transition visit to Saint Paul’s.

Children from Saint Marnock’s came for their Transition visit. They enjoyed Sci-ence, Art and Drama.

3rd Years who were excellent buddies during the

P7 Transition. Well done!

Children enjoyed French, Science and Art on their Transition visit to Saint Paul’s.

TEACHER LEAD : MISS EDWARDS AND MS PIEROTTI

We meet with our Pupil Parliament representatives on a regular basis and we ask them to let us know particular issues or

comments from the pupil forum (all young people in Saint Paul’s) and specifically from their year group.

Our most recent meeting on 3/6/21 was to discuss our 20th Anniversary Fun Week with the teachers involved and the

group helped with some excellent suggestions about “Goodie Bags” and particular stalls they would like to see for the week.

In other business, the concerns raised and solutions suggested were as follows:

Our pupils have started back ski

lessons this month and are lov-

ing the experience on the dry

slopes! We go to Bellahouston

Ski Centre on Fridays after

school for an hours lesson. It’s been great watch-

ing all the pupils

develop their con-

fidence on the

skis.

S1 and a few S2s entered the Heroes Stamp De-sign Competition! Fingers crossed we get a win-

ner. Well done!

We celebrated our 20th anniversary in

style in June for all our young people.

Thank you for all your support over

this time.
