This Week in NewTech@Mann
Setting Back the Clock – Students this week in World History and Lit presented
their plans for how to add time to the countdown of the “doomsday clock”, a
popular internet site that indicates the threat level to our world potentially
ending due to a wide range of threats. Students practiced persuasive techniques and used them in their final
presentations to suggest existing technology that could be used to counteract the planet’s threat level in some
way. Students also paralleled the threats to Earth to the issues that Greece faced in the fall of Rome.
Stephanie Morgan’s lesson on writing for children. Giving feedback to student groups.
On the Border – Students in GeoLit took part of our short week last week to present their ideas for how countries who share a border could work out their most notable issues. Students spent a great amount of time researching their countries and their disagreements. They then set out to offer solutions based on their knowledge of how other rivaling neighbors have compromised. This is a difficult task that world lead-ers struggle with, but their solutions were very thorough and well thought out.

Jefferson Awards Fall Conference – Students in our student service leadership group Students in Action took a trip to the fall conference for the Jefferson Awards at Furman University. This conference kickstarts our groups task to identify some local or global issue, find ways we could contribute to helping that issue, and then organize a plan for how they and other student organizations could help. We are very excited to see who they will be supporting and how.
Students collaborate with other schools. Students collaborate with other schools.
NewTech@Mann Student Work Spotlight – Each week we will begin featuring student work that a facilitator
has identified as being exemplary. This week Mr. Hurst wanted to acknowledge the work of a group from his
World Lit presentations mentioned previously. Michael Earl-Lyles and Elijah LeBlanc did an impressive job
presenting and showed the utmost focus and professional behavior.
“They did a great job of effectively identifying an imminent threat to the safety of the United States.
Their analysis gave insight to the development of EMP devices and how their long lasting effects could
potentially save the US from a fate similar to that of the Roman Empire.” -- Mr. Hurst

· Seniors will present November 28-December 8 · Juniors will present December 12-December 14 · Sophomores will present January 29-February 2 · Freshmen will present February 27-March 16
NT@M Parents of Seniors – can you believe it is time to order graduation medals? In the presentation letters
being sent home next week the parents of seniors will also receive instructions on how to order the NT@M
distinction medal for graduation. Congratulations! Please let Dr. Alsip know if you have any questions.
*Obstacle Course Gallery Walk – students in Geometry and Engineering classes finished their most recent project and had a gallery walk where students gave feedback on each other’s work. For this project, students were tasked with designing and creating a 3-D model of an obstacle course and one stunt that must use geometry and design principles from engineering.
Children’s Books Being Written – students in Ms. Nott’s Biology classes began writing and drawing their children’s books. The students are writing children’s books to help young children better understand what cancer does to the body and how it is treated.
BI-WEEKLY E-NEWSLETTER ISSUE 6 - Page 12 November 10, 2017
Flaming Hot Lab – This week students in Mr. Ginn’s Chemistry classes visited the lab and used the flame test to determine the wavelength of light emitted by different types of metal chlorides and the de-excitation of their valence electrons. When introduced to flame, the different metal chlorides give off brilliant colors.
Grades and ECHO – All grades for first quarter should now be in PowerSchool and students are now moving into second quarter. Please take the time to watch the helpful video below to be sure you know how to interpret quarter grades in ECHO:
