AikidoandInjuriesbyStanleyPraninAikiNews#58(October1983)
There isasubjectofconsiderable importancethatwehavedealtwithonseveraloccasions in
thispublication.Iwouldlike,however,tobroachitagaininamoresystematicmanner.Ireferto
thetopicofaikidotraininginjuries.Whenaikidoistalkedaboutinprint,thefocusseemstobe
more on the aspects of harmony, blending and spiritual matters and some of the more
mundaneareas revolving aroundpractice in thedojoareeasilyneglected. These include the
inevitable muscle strains, body soreness, jammed toes and fingers and the various other
"occupational"hazardsinherenttoourart.Theyareforgotten,thatis,untilthatinevitableday
whenweourselvesbecomethevictimsofaninjuryandmustlivewiththeaccompanyingpain.

Injuries
Whatarethecommonaikido injuries?Howarethey likelytooccur?I'll listsomeofthosethat

Wristinjuries:ikkyopins,nikyo,sankyo,kotegaeshi,shihonage. Elbowinjuries:ikkyopins,shihonage,jujigarami. Shoulderinjuries:shihonage,nikyopins,sankyopins,incorrectorobstructedfalls. Headandneckinjuries:shihonage,incorrectorobstructedfalls. Backinjuries:thesocalled"high"fallsfromshihonageandfromkoshinage. Kneeinjuries:(structural)improperloadingofpartnerinkoshinage,poorpositioningof

DangerinBasicTechniquesAglanceattheabovelistrevealsthatitisthebasictechniquesthataremostoftenimplicated.
Thisis
undoubtedly
due
to
the
frequency
with
which
we
practice
them.
It
is,
of
course,
also
a
reflectionof themartial rootsanddestructivepotentialof the techniques thatconstitute the

KillerShihonageParenthetically,oneshouldbearinmindthatshihonageis,inparticular,ahighrisktechnique.It
seemsthatonseveraloccasionsinJapan,traineeshavediedasaresultofinjuriessustainedto

shihonage.TheincidentsIamawareofoccurredinuniversityaikidoclubswherethejuniorsare
oftenphysically abusedby their seniorspresumably for their "edification." This is somewhat
akintothe"hazing"whichtakesplaceinthemilitaryacademiesintheU.S.
To continue, it iswellknown that the bujutsu arts fromwhich the techniques of aikido are
derivedevolvedhistoricallyasmeans forsubduinganddefeatingtheenemy. Inasmuchasthe
structureof thehumanbodyhasnotchangedmuchover thecenturies,except forbecoming

In aikido, this "sizing up exercise" is usually accomplished after a few throws have been
executed(oftenwithalittlebitofresistancethrowninforspice).Thepeckingorderhavingthus

Onemight
argue
based
on
the
fact
that

TheMachoCruncherWehavenowreachedthecruxoftheissue.Giventherealityofeverydaypracticewhereoneof

and
the
indisputable
fact
that
human

we
have,
not
surprisingly, a scenariowhere injurieswill occur with greater or lesser frequency.Naturally,

tolerableiftheabuserisanalreadyestablishedmemberofthegroup.

suspectthatmanyreaderswillfindthatthefollowingdescriptionsstrikeafamiliarnerve.
One of my alltime favorites is the "windup" nikyo. This involves the cruncher in question

discernible in the elbow joint. This is actually an unnatural condition. Hence, the
appropriatenessofthe"elbowstraightening"therapy.Youarebeingpinned in ikkyowithyour

blatantlyexposed.Fearnot,thecure is fast,sharpandsimple(and,perhaps,abitpainful,but

Anothermethod I regardwithparticular fondness involvesan "embrace."Theobjectof your

prohibitsme from lengthening the list. The rationalizations for this typeofbrutality are also
imaginative in fact you wouldn't believe them: "It was an accident!" "I didn't know your

There is another dimension surrounding this controversial topic which I find totally
unfathomable. That is the lack of a feeling of remorse I have seen after our oftalludedto
