Di"erent Strokes is the !rst exhibition of its genre of artistic talent from the highest echelons of the art world. The accent is on a distillation of art that highlights the gigantic strides taken by Indian and Pakistani artists in creating a niche for themselves on the global stage and being recognised as essential elements in the most prized art collections around the world. These canvases are an eloquent testimony to that deep and abiding vat of talent that today is directly responsible for generating interest and investment in art that stands the test of time and gives discerning collectors an added dimension to their private portfolios. Di"erent Strokes comes to Dubai, the city of ideas and innovations, with an eclectic yet exceptionally talented stable of painters, ranging from masters who have touched the stars to younger geniuses who are being swiftly recognised for their individuality and perception. From top drawer established artists like Jamil Naqsh, Ahmed Khan and Ismail Gulgee to acclaimed painters like Asad Faruki, Arif Khan,Hema Joshi,Amitesh Verma,SuchiChidambaram, Madhuri Bhaduri, Dipankar Das Gupta,Pratibha Singh and UAE’s Angellika Fulton, Sumaira Issacs,Sameeta Roy and Nivedita Saha this is truly an exhibition par excellence. Most of these artists have already achieved international attention and have been showcased in prestigious exhibitions where their brilliance has been re#ected in the demand for their works. This Exhibition is a celebration of not just art but the power and glory of the human mind and the absence of boundaries when the imagination is given full #ow. With the accent in this incredibly rare and, indeed, extraordinary collection of art being on calligraphy and abstracts the singular and collective impacts are signi!cant keeping the spirit of Ramadan in mind.

For Art Select the pleasure and sense of accomplishment in setting up these windows of great opportunity is further enhanced by its pledge to o"er the best of South Asian art to the world and be part of this exciting revolution. Over the years the company has grown with its artists, enjoying a mutually bene!cial relationship as our experts have guided young talent to realize their potential and !nd expression on the walls and easels of high value institutions. If Indian art today graces many a corporation, museum or home it is in ample measure a credit to the artist and the mentor.

Ahmed Khan is widely accepted as the greatest living calligraphic artist in Pakistan. He displays a splendid and natural talent in the genres of sculpture, designing and painting. He has designed several monuments in Lahore and Islamabad. His philosophy of art is described through his palette in a masterly fashion. Silver and gold leaf pasted on canvas, stretched on board is the base of his paintings. He has perfected a unique and intricate process which gives his paintings a mystical, magical quality. Chemicals are sprayed out on the foiled surface to extract immediate colour changes and give them sheen. He then deftly paints calligraphic forms and abstract patterns onto the coloured surfaces. This process is repeated several times, stretching over weeks. This treatment gives his paintings a luminosity and transparency that is unchallenged.

Each “Khan’ is a tribute to this man’s genius and becomes a centrepiece in any collection. His calligraphic themes deal with the Oneness of God and desire for peace.

Akram SpaulAlthough Akram Spaul’s work might seem academic, super realism has proven to be one of the most resilient counter-movements to both romantic abstraction and action painting. Akram’s work has its root in the immaculate trompe l’ oeil technique of Rene Magritte but the surrealist element in his work, although present, is quite subtle and understated. While much of modern art has been about destroying the illusionist concept of the picture as a window on reality, it was in the late 1960s and 70s that super realism made its appearance in the United States as a rebellion against the emotional excesses of Pollock and de Kooning et al. In this sense, Akram’s work has similar pretensions to extreme objectivity. Many of his pictures are remarkable for their impeccable execution.

Ami#eshVermaOne of the ‘young turks’ of modern Indian art, his work began with success in dramatic public interest message and he seamlessly moved from posters to the realm of art, bringing to the canvas a refreshing honesty and bluntness that have become hallmarks of all his works. Regularly exhibited at major shows he has been rising in popularity and made a major mark as a solo artist over the past ten years. His work gained a new maturity through the guidance and inspiration received from the eminent painter, the Late Shyamal Dutta Ray Solo Exhibitions: 1995- Hotel Welcome Group, Baroda;1997- Chitrakoot Art Gallery, Kolkata, GROUP SHOWS – 1998- GALERIE 88 in collaboration with I.T.C;Recent Works at Sanskriti Art Gallery, Delhi;1999- “Young Bengal” at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai;2000- “Young Faces” at Jehangir Art Gallery,Mumbai;2000- Group Show organized by R.A.D at Birla Academy, Kolkata;2000- Rabindra Bhavan,Lalit Kala Academy, Delhi, AWARDS – National Scholarship awarded by Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Govt of India.

AmiyaBha$acharya“….and my images - the yearning hand, the half moon, the banana leaves, most of all the women – are all part of a simple past, and the dreams of a magical childhood.”

Born in 1949, Amiya Bhattacharya studied at the Indian College of Arts in Calcutta, and thereafter joined the Ananda Bazar Patrika Group of Publication, where today he is the Senior Art Director and also designs for Penguin India. Amiya’s statement is found in social reality. He is an artist of rare emotion and sensitivity. And his statements focus on social realities, often powerful and evocative of the truth as he perceives it. Since his natural di$dence prevents him from voicing his innermost thoughts and feelings, he turns, like so many socially reticent people into being profoundly articulate in his art. For Amiya, it is his form of eloquence.

Angellika Keller FultonBorn in Hauenstein, Germany, Angelika Keller-Fulton’s appreciation for the arts began at a young age. After completing her education in hotel management she moved to London where she met her husband Peter, also a hotelier. Their journey has taken them all over the world to Switzerland, New Zealand, Dubai, Australia, Macau, Mexico, India and back to Dubai with their two kids where they have now lived for nearly seven years.

In Dubai, she was fortunate enough to meet a German artist, Eva Englisch, who has since become a very close friend and mentor. Their painting sessions or “playing around sessions,” involved trying out di"erent media and putting each step on canvas as it presents itself. Hence Angelika’s art evolves, developed sometimes from a concrete idea into something completely di"erent.

Arif Khan Another of Pakistan’s more telling artists he is now up there with the best of them. His art has always stood out and his talent was recognized and showcased at a very young age.

But the medals are only public symbols of his calligraphic capabilities and his impact on the art world per se. Today, Arif has created a movement of his own and his calligraphy has transcended the traditional limits of this genre of art.

Asad FarukiTo celebrate the spirit of freedom, several years ago Asad Faruki made pigeons in plaster to decorate National College of Art building for its annual convocation. Today, those plaster pigeons may have left the college; they have not left the canvas of Asad Faruki. In his paintings, Faruki demonstrates his skill by making interesting compositions and preparing tactile surfaces, a craft he learnt at NCA as a student and later as a tutor at the Department of Communication Designs. Hence his pro!le of a graphic designer has contributed towards shaping his ideas and imagery.

His work is extremely attractive, colourful and full of textures. He creates canvases of di"erent sizes in separate colour schemes. Yet all his works follow a certain pattern, a kind of formula, !lling the areas with paint of varying thickness, then adding Arabic script, and, if needed, drawing an object, such as a fruit, bird or animal. All these components in his paintings are well-balanced, blended and present visually engaging pieces.

B%shir Mirza A free spirit in himself and one of the creations of the sixties syndrome Bashir Mirza with his razzle dazzle art career and happy go lucky persona did much to popularize art in Pakistan. He studied at Mayo School of Art (NCA) where he was one of the special favourites of the great Shakir Ali. A product of the swinging sixties, he lived his life on his own terms. He propelled art out into the open daring the public to see it and to think rather than just see. He never stayed for long with one theme or style, #uctuating between realistic, abstract and non-objective styles. Strong emotion and symbolism typi!ed his work.

Another highlight of his artistic career was “Portfolio of Pakistan” produced in ‘67. Basically portraits of people of Pakistan from various provinces, they were sketched in Pen and Ink in a single tone. The structural strength and expressive quality of this work, had drawn strong inspiration from Sadequain’s ink drawings or !gurative forms. This outspoken rebel of an artist was one of the earliest, truly “bohemian” painters Pakistan had along with Ahmed Pervaiz and Sadequain.

D!&ankar D%sgupta One of the more senior practitioners of the abstract art form he has established his credentials with a power and originality that combine to produce incredible canvases and can lure the a!cionado into a relationship simply by being there. The works have been variously called holistic, re#ective and essential these canvases are almost three dimensional in their intensity and throb with a sense of movement and energy. There seems to be a central point from which the rest of the frame !nds its pulse and radiates that irresistible power. Dasgupta is now recognized as a major player in the Indian art scene and is certain to raise the bar in the future.

Hema JoshiHema Joshi is quite an accomplished contemporary artist in the Indian milieu, even though she discovered her passion for art only at a relatively later stage of her life. Some may say Joshi’s oils and semi-abstract works are impulsive, but on second viewing, most people !nd some innocence and maybe even their lost childhoods. Through her works, Joshi has created for her viewers a means to escape the drudgery of everyday life.

Joshi has had shows in France, Germany; Participation in Euro-Asian Biennale in Ankara, Turkey; Participation in Triennale in New Delhi; Invited by The Visual Arts of UK,1996, for a group exhibition of Indian artists And a residency programme of three weeks; Invited by The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey for a solo showing at the World Trade Centre I Gallery Van Gogh show in New Delhi Works auctioned by Sotheby’s & Christie’s; Conducted Child art classes for 15 years. NUQTA20” x 29”

Oil on canvas

Ismail GulgeeIsmail Gulgee an award-winning abstract expressionist was one of the prominent masters from Pakistan. His craft was in#uenced by Pollack’s style of ‘action painting’ or ‘gestural abstraction’, where the paint is applied to the surface in a bold movement. He began as a portrait painter, and was commissioned to paint royal families and statesman. He !nally came into his own with his abstracts which were inspired by Islamic calligraphy.

Gulgee’s Nuktas, are the mystic symbols of the unity of the universe, and the energy, which ties humans to the universal force. To quote Ann Marie Schimmel, “it (the Nukta) might be an allusion to a representation of the ‘Primordial Dot’ the !rst thing that according to some mystic thought appeared on the empty tablet of creation”. He worked with a variety of materials and his colour palette was varied and gem like. His craft was unique because he treated an oriental art form, with an occidental idiom. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions around the world and his loss is still felt in the art.

Jamil Naqsh The quintessential woman and dove, a theme Naqsh has honed to perfection. It is the treatment of this theme, which varies with every painting. The mood is distinct in each piece, but the woman and the dove are always in sync. She is still; he is in constant motion. He #its in front of her face, he perches on an arm or he alights on her head. The doves are nostalgic, a reminder of his childhood in Kariana.

A Naqsh is now a must for any collection and stands as an epitome of the discerning collector’s priorities. He was taught by Ustad Haji Sharif, the father of miniature painting in Pakistan and that training has brought a sense of detail and intricacy into his works. Naqsh using the miniature technique, moved towards abstraction. Jamil Naqsh’s juxtaposition was his own, the combination of Mughal technique and post war abstractionism. Naqsh’s presence on the art landscape of Pakistan was given its due when he became the subject of an extensive retrospective at the Mohatta Palace Museum in December 2003: Jamil Naqsh-A Retrospective.

M%shkoor Ra'aMashkoor Raza’s work must be appreciated for the form and the structure he puts into his canvases. A proli!c painter, he developed his cubist style of horses and nudes early in his career, over time allowing the form to emerge more in his work. Best known for his nudes and horses, his paintings have free movement stemming perhaps from the speed at which he is able to transfer his thoughts out on to his canvas.

In his earlier work, he used colour to add more to the structure that he is creating rather than serve a functional purpose in his composition. However his more recent works show more subdued colours providing a quieter tone and allowing the !gures to dominate the canvas.

Nahid( Ra'aNahida is an instinctive artist and this natural talent is re#ected in her works. Even the abstract has a certain form while retaining its intrinsic free #ow. She believes that a work of art, any painting or sketch is worth admiring primarily because it represents a composition or organization of colour, line, light and shade and that makes every e"ort unique and special. She conveys her message through a certain depth of vision and uses her own crucible in which to create her imagery and colour. Her works brim with enthusiasm and energy and it is this vitality with which she captures nuances and brings to her works an acknowledged delicacy and warmth.

She has held Solo exhibition at Takshila Art Gallery Islamabad, June 2004; Solo exhibition at The Art Gallery Karachi, January 2005; Solo exhibition at French Centre, Lahore January, 2006; Solo exhibition at Nairang Art gallery Lahore September, 2006. Pratibha S!nghArt cannot be explained. Pratibha says..”I don’t know why I paint, is it loneliness or love, hope or desperation. Is it a need to run and hide or a need to be found. Pratibha’s sharp almost razor like introspection is like an unending quest for self realization and the same energy cascades from the mind onto the canvas. I !rst understood art as a !ve year old when I moved to Iraq during the Iraq-Iran war. We lived in a Indian camp and didn’t interact much with life outside which was dominated by a culture and language so di"erent from ours. Unlike India, Iraq was not busy so everything stood out with a sense of character and mystery. People looked deep into my eyes with surprise and wonder, and I’d imagine dressing up like them and living their lives.” This transposition became Pratibha’s force. She says, “This is when I developed a sense of art and started using my imagination. I began experiencing and expressing life through the lines on my canvas with a wonderful silence willing to be heard and !ll the voids of my consciousness.”

S(bine CarahAmong the top international artists are the works of French painter Sabine Carah who set up her workshop in a 16th century convent after spending a two year study period at the Plastic Arts Faculty before entering the Fine Arts School in Aix en Provence, the city of art, light and gastronomy.

Born January 1, 1961, Carah spent her childhood in the south of France. From the torrent of talent in the workshop she joined other artists to create surge in the in the mainstream current of the moment known as, “Free Representation”. Her works have about them a touch of the surreal and yet are bed rocked in form, even though she likes to feel they are free #owing and amorphous, uncontrolled by the limitations of form. To quote, “Freed from any !gurative support, sensitivity and emotion alone express themselves through the language of the soul”. Her works are today an integral part of many private collections throughout the world.

S(mit DeySamit Dey is from the genre of young artists who spearhead the Indian revolution on the global canvas. He was born and raised in Kolkata, obtained his MFA from Shantiniketan in 1992 and has, in these few years, brought a certain strength and vigour to the the art world, receiving accolades from the masters and being successfully featured in a number of successful solo and group exhibitions in India and abroad.

The Dey concept is made noteworthy by its use of di"erent elements as seen through the mind which he deftly and dramatically uses as his prism. The brooding, often sombre results are marked by corners and angular shapes reminiscent of the American abstract expressionist Franz Kline. The di"erence is that in Dey’s work, the geometry is not cold and antiseptic but exudes the complexities of human life and the overlapping of its many parts, each individual yet part of the whole. He has exhibited throughout India and in Germany and the U.K.

Suchi Chid(mbaram

Initially self taught, this London based artist received formal training from K.C. Murukesan, an artist of renown and famous for his abstract landscapes. This experience gave a fresh dimension to her work. For the last few years she has been concentrating on oil painting, and draws inspiration from the views of cities, their people, the architecture and the interminable stories behind them. She captures the very mood of these inspiring cities and then narrates them on to the canvas with impressionistic strokes of thick oil paint. They reveal the rhythm and movement of the people in these places.

Sumaira.K. Isaacs - Sumaira’s artworks are a re#ection of her personality, her experiences and her faith, this trinity underscoring her zeal and the grandeur of her style. She began painting in 1981 under the tutelage of one of India’s great artists, the Late Kiran Sethi. For two intense years Sumaira found her forte in mastering to a great extent the human form and its skin tones. From then on experience has been her teacher and the passion of trying new ideas her mentor. Another style of in#uence came to Sumaira in 1985 when she was mentored for a brief period of time by Shakeel Siddique the world-renowned Pakistani artist.

Sumaira’s contemporary works are in#uenced by several modern day calligraphic artists from Pakistan, none more than Sadek Aine’s calligraphic style, which prodded her religious faith and has inspired her later works. Islamic art has now become a theme in most of her works. Sumaira now !nds a sense of ful!lment in mixed media styles, which provides her the texture and backgrounds that she !nds so satisfying to combine, re#ecting her unique Islamic style to which she is a moderate but staunch follower.
