Overview

Welcome to beautiful Camp Warren! Once you drive onto this 88 acre campus you will be captivated by the scenic setting. With cabins nestled into Illinois timber, a gorgeous 2.5 acre lake, and state of the art meeting spaces, it’s the perfect combination of tranquility and functionality. Home to AHG Illinois Regional Summer Camp, Camp Warren provides the perfect location and support as we continue to advance the AHG mission: "Building women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country". Tenderheart Camp: Must have accompanying registered adult. Entering 2nd grade 2017-2018. Minimum age 7 by October 31, 2017. Tenderheart activities will be conducted indoors and outdoors. Tenderhearts will complete daily badge requirements, often earning complete badges. The girls will also enjoy afternoon free time and participate in fun nightly activities. Explorer Camp: Entering 4th – 6th grade 2017-2018. Minimum age 9 by October 31, 2017. Explorer campers will continue to develop their skills and advance in AHG by selecting badge sessions to customize their camp experience. Explorers will work towards earning badges, enjoy afternoon free time and participate in adventurous and fun evening activities. Pioneer/Patriot Camp: Entering 7th – 12th grade 2017-2018. Minimum age 12 by October 31, 2017. This higher level AHG camp will test and expand the Pioneer/Patriot abilities. Pi/Pa camp allows older girls to customize their summer camp experience to meet their skill and advancement goals by selecting from a variety of badge sessions. Many badge sessions will focus on the core requirements. Girls will also have the opportunity to serve in leadership roles at Camp. Campers with Special Needs: Camp Warren seeks to provide an inclusive environment. Campers requiring special accommodations, meals, or equipment must include this information in the Special Needs section of the registration form. To inquire if a special need can be met prior to registering for camp, notify the Camp Director. All information will be kept confidential and shared only with the appropriate staff. Jr Assistant Leaders (Registered with AHG, girls ages 18-21) Camp is a great place to gain leadership experience while working with younger girls. Jr Assistant Leaders, with adult supervision and approval, have opportunities to teach badges, mentor younger girls, assist adult badge teachers, and participate in Camp Warren activities as camp interns. Don’t want to be so visible? There’s plenty of support and background help needed. A wide variety of opportunities are available. Jr Assistant Leaders are expected to fill a role of service, not just “hang out”. Jr Assistant Leaders will work hard, play hard, and enjoy almost every moment of it. Jr Assistant Leaders do not contribute to the AHG adult girl ratio, may not singularly buddy with a younger camper, and may not share a tent with a younger camper. Camp Staff

Spiritual Development at Camp “American Heritage Girls is a Christ-centered leadership and character development ministry.” As such, AHG Summer Camp is a great time for girls to focus on God through nature. There will be daily devotions and nightly meetings which focus on character development.

AHG Statement of Faith: We believe that there is one Triune God – Father; Jesus Christ, His one and

only Son; and the Holy Spirit – Creator of the universe and eternally existent. We believe the Holy

Scriptures (Old and New Testaments) to be the inspired and authoritative Word of God. We believe each

person is created in His image for the purpose of communing with and worshipping God. We believe in

the ministry of the Holy Spirit, Who enables us to live Godly lives. We believe that each of us as an

individual is called to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength; and collectively

to love our neighbors as ourselves. We believe God calls us to lives of purity, service, stewardship, and

integrity."

Clarity is further provided to the following terms:

Purity - God calls us to lives of holiness, being pure of heart, mind, word, and deed. We are to reserve

sexual activity to the sanctity of marriage, a lifelong commitment before God between a man and a

woman.

Service - God calls us to become responsible members of our community and the world through selfless

acts that contribute to the welfare of others.

Stewardship - God calls us to use our God-given time, talents, and money wisely.

Integrity - God calls us to live moral lives that demonstrate an inward motivation to do what is right,

regardless of the cost.

Service Opportunities All campers will participate in camp-wide service projects, including cabin, dining room, and bathroom facility cleanup.

Free Time activities: Fishing (3lb catfish, 5lb carp have been caught in the lake), kayaks, paddleboats,

swimming, zip line (must be Pioneer level and 75lbs), tetherball, air hockey, sand volleyball, basketball, carpet ball, ping pong, Gaga ball, 4 square, - just to name a few.

Badge Work All campers will have opportunities to earn badge requirements through the activities in which they participate. Each camper will receive a Badge Completion Form per badge (a listing of requirements met for each badge) to take home and to present at the troop level for record keeping. Badges will be attained by each troop’s typical procedure. Badge Selection will be made online. Once your registration and $100 deposit is received, the Badge Sign-up link will be sent to you! Badge sign up closes April 15. Badges will be assigned to girls after April 15. All Campers will have a badge schedule and are expected to attend the sessions.

Additional Badge Information and Badge Schedule for Explorer and PI/PA level can be found here: https://troop-il3130.trooptrack.com/

Tenderhearts will be notified of their badge schedule via email.

Swimming Swim-Check & Waterfront Procedures All girls and adults who come to camp and intend to participate in any event involving water (pool or lake, badge work or free time) must complete a Swim Test Classification Form. It is highly recommended that girls come to camp with this form completed, although it can be completed at camp. Non-swimmers must bring and utilize a Coastguard approved personal floatation device and stay in the “kiddy” pool. Each camper (girl and adult) will have a cloths pin with her/his name on it. They will be colored by swimming level: blue-swimmer, no restrictions; red- beginner, some restrictions; white (no color) – non swimmer. Upon entering the pool area, girls should take their cloths pin from the “out of pool” hanger, and place on the “in the pool” hanger. At any given time, this will allow us to know who is in and out of the pool. AHG at Camp Warren will implement the buddy system with checks every 15 minutes to ensure that all swimmers are accounted for. Girls need to be in a modest one-piece (or full coverage tankini) swim suit. A Tankini is acceptable if it provides full core coverage, no midriff showing. No bikinis. Shorts may be worn over a one piece suit if desired. Leaders reserve the right to question any swim suit or attire. Campers may be asked to wear a T-shirt over the suit. All campers need to bring their own sunscreen and have it with them at all times.

Camp Warren Staff Counselors Camp Warren Staff will help implement the AHG program and camp activities for the enjoyment and learning opportunities of our AHGs. The Camp staff during program activities, is not counted as part of the adult/girl ratio. AHG Adult volunteers are expected to engage in the program activities and badge work to ensure that proper adult/girl ratios are met and to assist where needed. As a reminder, Camp Staff sleeping and break areas are off limits to campers. It is important that the campers respect the Camp Staff during their off hours and break times.

AHG Adult Camper Roles Adult campers make AHG summer camp possible. Adults will contribute to 2-deep leadership coverage per AHG Health and Safety Guidelines. Adult campers will be asked to lend a hand whenever needed. All adults will be asked to sign up for a 2-deep leadership badge and/or free time activity. Adults have the option to follow their daughter’s schedule or not by the badges/activities they choose to attend.

For example: each day, Monday- Thursday, adults will be asked to sign up for 1 badge session daily, AND, 1 free-time activity or bathroom monitor time slot (for a total of 4 badges AND 4 activity/bathroom slots)

Page 6: AHG Challenge Camp · only Son; and the Holy Spirit – Creator of the universe and eternally existent. We believe the Holy Scriptures (Old and New Testaments) to be the inspired

6

We also need 2 bathroom monitors for Friday night. Anyone selecting this slot may trade a Mon-Thurs activity slots for the Friday bathroom slot.

Volunteer Role Descriptions: (so you know what you’re signing up for!)

Badge Sessions: Please engage during the badge session. Some Badge teachers will need more help than others. Please refrain from being on your phone- there’s free time for that! Note that some adults are floating- don’t assume you are not needed if a badge session seems heavy with adults. That means skipping out on your badge session to nap is not acceptable.

Lake: Bring your camp chair and monitor boating usage. Assist girls with floatation devices. Explorer and older may use boats (paddle, kayak) and TH must have accompanying adults for the paddle boats.

Pool: you may certainly get in the water, but please be mindful of girls swimming. Assist girls with moving clothes pins (check-in and out). Once girls become familiar with this, they can do on their own. Blue wrist bands= full pool access, Red wristbands= shallow end of pool, No wristbands=non swimmer, must stay in the kiddie pool. Low Zipline: Camp Warren asks for an adult to be present while girls use the low zipline. Girls may come and go. So bring your camp chair and a book. Girls should not be excessively wild and crazy, but are welcome to enjoy. Remind girls not to grab hold of the line- where the pulley is- we want them to keep all their fingers! High Zipline: Assist Camp Warren in running the high zipline. Maybe stationed at top or bottom of hill. Girls with yellow wristband may ride the zipline. Paperwork Helper: help file badge completion forms after dinner. Bathroom Monitor: Monitor bathrooms during evening peak time. There should be no rowdy behavior- this mean no handstands on toilet seats (true story). Parent/Guardian of Tenderhearts shadow and engage with their child while at camp. Troops should register enough adults, along with girls, to satisfy girl leader ratios: 8 explorers/2 adults, 6 Pioneer-Patriot/1 adult. Adults should also choose sleeping accommodations with their girls. (If girls tent, leaders should tent. If girls stay in cabins, leaders must stay in cabins). Each troop should select currently certified CPR and First Aid certified Adults Volunteers in order to meet the AHG Health and Safety Guidelines.

Mail & Telephone Service Mail and care packages are always welcomed at Camp Warren. Campers love to receive a letter from home. Send to: Camper Name

AHG Camp Warren, 4225 Camp Warren Lane, Decatur IL 62521 If you need to reach your daughter, please call AHG Camp Director Tina: 314-413-1796 or Assistant Amy: 847-340-2218 or email [email protected]. Only emergency calls are accepted for campers.

Cell Phones at Camp and Camp Electronics Girls are welcome to bring cameras, but should leave other electronics safely at home.

Page 10: AHG Challenge Camp · only Son; and the Holy Spirit – Creator of the universe and eternally existent. We believe the Holy Scriptures (Old and New Testaments) to be the inspired

10

Do not bring any cell phones, CD players, I pods, electronic readers (Kindle, nook), hand held games, MP3 players, DVD players or any other electronics. Girls may simply not use these items at camp. From past experience, we suggest, that you, as the adult volunteer, put any cell phones the girls may have brought (they are listed on the pack list as an item not to bring to camp) in a safe place, maybe locked in your car. We have found that the cell phones are a major source of prolonged “homesickness” so out of sight, out of mind. Adults: Camp-wide Wi-Fi is available for adults, but please limit the use of your cell phone. Please keep your phone on silent or vibrate so that the girls will not hear it. If you must answer a call, do so discretely. Step away where the girls are, keep the conversation quiet and short.

Food 17 meals will be provided: Sunday evening through breakfast Saturday morning.

Sorry, but Camp Warren cannot accommodate special dietary needs. If you have dietary restrictions, please contact the Camp Director, Tina.

Food is not permitted in tents or cabins. The smell of an empty candy wrapper, peeling from fruit, etc. is enough to attract animals into the tent or cabin. Storage of food in a pack is likely to result in the entire backpack being dragged out of the tent by raccoons. Food in cabins attracts cute little rodents, mice! Please stress to the campers in your care the importance of not having food in their tent or cabin. Snacks purchased at the Snack Shack should be consumed in the vicinity of the Snack Shack.

Snack Shack

The “Snack Shack,” run by Camp Warren, offers girls snacks and sweets. Girls may turn in spending money to Camp Warren upon Registration. Girl accounts will be kept and any unspent money will be returned to camper or Camp Coordinator at the end of the week. Campers are responsible to collect unused money. Campers leaving early who forget to claim unused funds – forfeit funds to camp. No reimbursements will be made after camp ends on Saturday morning.

Meal Times

Everyone is expected to attend meals. Meals are served as follows: 8:00 AM Breakfast 12:00 PM Lunch 5:30 PM Dinner

Dining Hall Clean Up

Girls will be assigned Dining Hall clean-up and other clean up duties on a rotating schedule. Thanks for encouraging your girls to be diligent with their assigned duties as this is one way we can serve Christ and Camp Warren.

Health and Safety All participants must be registered members of American Heritage Girls. Any suspicious individual, group, or vehicle should be reported to the Camp Warren Office immediately for resolution. Campers and adult volunteers are asked not to leave the property unless it is absolutely necessary. All individuals coming or going, must let Tina (314-413-1796) or Corrine (847-830-6782) know and must sign in and out

11

at the AHG Office, located at the Nora Hunter Lodge. Our purpose for this notification is to ensure proper ratios and communication.

There will always be adult 2 deep leadership Girls use the Buddy System – Always. No form of tobacco or alcohol is allowed at Camp Warren. No fireworks or personal guns are allowed at Camp Warren. Nothing illegal is allowed at Camp Warren.

Knife Policy Camp Warren has a no knife policy and is making an exception for the AHG camp. We appreciate Camp Warren’s flexibility in this area. If girls are not taking a badge that requires a knife, please keep your knife at home. For badge work only, a pocket knife, 3” maximum blade, is allowed and needed for Explorer and Pi/Pa taking either Outdoor Skills or Outdoor Cooking. Knives should be labeled with girl’s name and will be collected upon registration. It is best to label the knife using tape as permanent marker wears off the knife. Knives will be returned to camper during badge work, and at the end of the week. Adults choosing to keep their own knife take full responsibility for doing so. It must be kept on their person or in a safe, preferably locked box/car, inaccessible to girls or others. Hatchets will also be collected at registration and should be labeled with girl’s name. Note: use blue tape for labeling as writing directly on blade or knife wears off. Severe Weather Severe weather at camp can include light to heavy rain, thunderstorms, high winds, tornadoes and flashfloods. These can approach quickly and without warning, and they can strike at any time of the day or night. Camp Staff monitors local weather conditions and takes steps deemed necessary to protect campers, adult volunteers, and staff. The Emergency Plan will be presented at the Sunday evening camp orientation meeting. Child Abuse AHG Policy – if an adult member learns or suspects that a youth member has been emotionally, physically or sexually abused, we can help by not questioning the validity of the incident; help is needed no matter the validity of the incident. Control emotions, give support, get information about the incident, get medical assistance and immediately contact the appropriate social service agency and police in compliance with state and local laws and regulations, parents/guardians and the designated AHG Unit Leader. You are not required to know for certain that a child has been abused. All that the law requires is that you have reasonable suspicion and are reporting in “good faith”. It is the responsibility of the AHG Adult Volunteer to file an incident report with the AHG, Inc. Office within 24 hours. Bullying can be another form of abuse and can result from adult and/or youth behaviors. Bullying can be physical, emotional or mental. Female bullying is becoming increasingly common and typically is in the form of verbal and emotional harassment. Cyberbullying (bullying via internet, email, test messaging, etc.) is also increasingly common and equally destructive.

Page 12: AHG Challenge Camp · only Son; and the Holy Spirit – Creator of the universe and eternally existent. We believe the Holy Scriptures (Old and New Testaments) to be the inspired

12

Additional information about Child Abuse can be found in the Troop Coordinator, Unit Leader Handbooks and on the leader portal of the AHG website. Behavior at Camp Issues and conflicts will arise at camp. They should be addressed following the Biblical model for conflict resolution. Grace will be extended when mistakes occur and campers will right the wrong. It is important that the Adult Volunteer directly supervising the campers, be involved with assisting those campers with their issue or conflict. Repeat issues are unacceptable and campers may be asked to leave camp. AHG’s Creed is our model for all campers and volunteers.

Inappropriate language is unacceptable.

Disrespectful behavior, to campers or adults, is unacceptable.

Each girl is expected to follow her daily schedule.

Issues with conflict will be addressed following the Biblical model for conflict resolution. Emotional Issues Exhaustion and heat can create many emotional issues for girls of this age. As a volunteer, be aware of this situation and learn to lend your support & encouragement for those that may have heightened anxiety. Treat all emotional issues as valid and warrant of attention. If you feel that the emotional issues are out of control or you feel that the issue may be of a serious nature, please contact AHG Camp Director, Tina 314-413-1796. The situation may warrant a phone call to a parent to discuss how to handle the situation. Reporting a Health Emergency Report any illness or injury to the Health Officer Corrine Krueger 847-830-6782 or AHG Camp Director, Tina 314-413-1796 immediately. You will need to work with Camp staff to determine the proper action to take. An incident report regarding the illness or injury will be sent to AHG, Inc. office within 24 hours of the emergency. Filing an Incident Report In the event of an emergency, AHG National will be notified within 24 hours of an incident. Notification will occur via submission of an Incident Report, along with a follow-up phone call. Incidents that require reporting include:

Any injury or illness that required EMS care

Any injury or illness that results in hospitalization

Any incident/occurrence of a missing AHG participant

Any incident/occurrence of an encounter with a suspicious or seemingly dangerous stranger

Lost/Missing Persons Most “lost” camper situations involve a camper or leader not knowing where another one is, rather than the camper actually being lost. When you suspect someone may be lost, first, search the camping area thoroughly, including tents. Check also the shower house and the immediate vicinity. Second, check areas where the camper was last reported to have been seen or been heading. If a person misses a scheduled meal without prior notification, they are considered missing.

Page 13: AHG Challenge Camp · only Son; and the Holy Spirit – Creator of the universe and eternally existent. We believe the Holy Scriptures (Old and New Testaments) to be the inspired

13

We treat all reports of missing persons seriously. Notify the Camp Director Tina 314-413-1796 immediately. The Camp Director will determine a plan for the search. Medical Forms Every camper and volunteer is required to submit an "Annual Health and Medical Form" completed upon arrival to camp. Administration of Medications All medications will be administered by the Camp Warren Nurse according to the Medication Administration Form filled out by the parent. Medications Campers may not self-medicate or have any medication in their possession. If a girl camper brings medication to camp, it will be collected at registration and stored by the camp nurse. Medication will be returned to the girl at the end of camp. There will be exceptions for lifesaving medications to be carried at camp. This decision will be made and noted during the registration process. Adults: ALL medications, prescriptions and non-prescription, brought to camp by adult volunteers are REQUIRED to be secured in a locked storage. This policy may seem too strict for over the counter medications; however, if a camper consumes medication that is not meant for them, it has deadly potential. There will be exceptions for lifesaving medications to be carried at camp. This decision will be made and noted during the registration process. Medication must be in the original container and contain the following information:

Camper’s Name and Troop#

Prescription Number

Name of Medication

Name of Prescribing Physician

Date Prescribed

Directions for Use

CROWD NOTICE / RELEASE

Please be aware, by attending AHG Camp Warren, your photo may be captured as part of a group or crowd, or inadvertently by a fellow camper’s personal camera. By attending Camp Warren you release Camp Warren and the AHG camp volunteer staff, and it’s successors, from any liability whatsoever of any nature. Heat Summer temperatures in the afternoon can be blazing. At times, it may be necessary to reduce action and increase water intake. Soft drinks, tea, or coffee do not replace water. Drink water, water, water! Campers must carry a water bottle with them at all times! Handling Homesickness Camp Directors and Adult Volunteers describe homesickness as “that longing for home” but many campers would call it, “that terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach.” When girls are away from home for an extended period, you can expect to find some homesickness. Here are some tips that may help you deal with it: Most incidences occur within the first 2 days of camp, and it occurs mostly in your younger girls. Homesickness is seldom announced as such by the camper. She has a stomachache, can’t eat, has an asthma attack, or otherwise feels physically ill. She probably will say she wants to go home because of her illness. Be sure the girl truly isn’t sick before you worry about homesickness. As an AHG Leader/Volunteer, you can often predict homesickness. Look for the girls who don’t join in activities. A peer can often cure homesickness better and faster than adults. What the homesick girl needs is to do something with a friend. Be sympathetic but get her going, doing things with another girl who asks her. (Get somebody to ask her). If you suspect a girl is homesick, or might be, get her deeply involved in interesting activities right away. If you find yourself in a situation, you can’t handle, talk with another adult volunteer to assist you with helping the girl find what she needs to stay at camp.
