Honorable members of Congress,U.S. Ambassador to Greece Mr. Speckhard,AHEPA FAMILY DELEGATION,

It is a great honor to host our distinguished members of Congress in the

land that gave birth to Democracy and wings to the American Dream.

Hellas gave our founding forefathers the inspiration to create a nation

based on Democracy and Freedom. These are the very concepts that it

gave to the world thousands of years ago. The very fact that we adopted

these concepts enabled us to struggle with injustices on a worldwide

level and prevail against the forces of ignorance, bigotry, and all the

baser elements of human nature. This enabled us to become a superpow-

er and establish these values as the basis of the structure of the western

world. I believe that it is only fit, that we embrace the mother of our

culture and reestablish the best of relationships. For that I am grateful

for your presence here and promise you that AHEPA HELLAS is at your

side as much as you already have AHEPA NATIONAL at the forefront of

    all such efforts.

    Sincerely,

Dr Alfred J. BarichDistrict Governor AHEPA HELLAS , District 25Vice Chairman AHEPA 2008 Supreme Convention

    Dear AHEPA Family:

It is with a deep sense of pride and pleasure that I address you through this letter advising you of the 2008 AHEPA Family Supreme Convention in Athens, Greece. The AHEPA Family has visited Greece for Supreme Conventions twice since 1922. I was privileged to join the AHEPA Fam-ily both times, in 1965 and again in1970 when I served as Convention Secretary. Thousands flocked to Motherland Greece to reconnect with family and history. Join us as we do it again!!!! The dates to remember for the 2008 Supreme Convention in Athens, Greece, are July 1-12, 2008. The AHEPA Convention Committee has been working hard to prepare a wonderful getaway for the entire AHEPA community. The AHEPA from Australiasia, Canada, Greece and Cyprus will be attending our event in Athens, Greece. Thousands of Ahepans, Daughters, Sons and Maids will work together for this family reunion. AHEPA has contracted FREI Travel Congress to handle all our travel needs and together with our partners for air travel, we are working to provide the most comprehensive and affordable program we can to our members. This convention will be a most memorable and rewarding experience for the entire AHEPA Family. We have planned a week of unforgettable events, a spectacular Opening Ceremony, July 4th Party, dances and social events which will forever be engraved in your heart and soul. This homecoming will be unlike ANY convention you have been to, we hope you and your family will join us. On behalf of AHEPA, I invite you and your family to meet with us in Greece July 1-12, 2008 for the Official International AHEPA Supreme Convention. Make your reservations early as we are expecting a historic turn out for all our events and socials.

WASHINGTON (29 Aug.) Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Co-Chair of the Congres-sional Hellenic Caucus, Congressman Gus M. Bilirakis (R-FL), Co-Chair of the Congressional Hellenic Caucus, Congressman Zack Space (D-OH), and Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD) issued the following statements on the wildfires that have killed at least 63 people and burned more than 400,000 acres of the Greek coun-tryside: My deepest sympathies go out to the people of Greece who are battling the worst fires their country has seen in 150 years. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time, and with all of the brave men and women who have devoted themselves to the firefighting effort, said Rep. Maloney. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Hellenic Caucus, I will be doing all that I can to ensure that the people of Greece get the assistance they need to fight these devastating fires and rebuild their lives. As a member of the House Subcommittee on European Affairs, Congressman Bil-irakis expressed his sincere sorrow over the devasta-tion in Greece by stating, My heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to the families and friends who have lost loved ones in this horrific tragedy. I commend and recognize Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and the Greek government in their efforts to get these blazes under control. Congressman Bilirakis added, The unity and solidarity of the brave people of Greece that has arisen from the ashes of these fires is representa-tive of the Greek spirit and pride that so clearly defines this nation. Rep. Zack Space said, The tragedy un-

folding in Greece touches all of us on both a humani-tarian and an historical level. My heart goes out to those families who have been impacted, in one way or another, with these fires. I am also greatly concerned about the archeological sites that are in danger of being destroyed. It is important for the United States to do everything possible to assist Greece in overcoming this enormous tragedy. My heart goes out to the families who have incurred enormous loss as a result of these terrible fires, said Congressman John Sarbanes. I have no doubt that the people of Greece will prevail in the face of this tragedy and that they will succeed in the recovery effort. I am working with my col-leagues in the Congress to encourage the United States government to assist where needed, our ally, which has stood by us time and time again. Background: Estab-lished in 1996, the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues works to foster and improve relations between the United States and Greece. The Caucus brings a re-newed congressional focus on key diplomatic, military, and human rights issues in a critical part of the world. The members of the Caucus introduce legislation, ar-range briefings on current events, and disseminate in-formation to interested parties. The topics on which the Caucus focuses include U.S. aid to Greece and Cyprus, the conflict in Cyprus, U.S. relations with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the status of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and developments in the Aegean. In the 110th Congress, the Caucus has more than 130 members.

Congressman Carter was unanimously elected by his peers to serve in the House Republican leadership as the House Republican Conference Secretary for the 110th Congress. In this position, Congressman Carter holds the sixth most powerful position among House Republicans.

Carter also continues to serve on the House Republi-can Steering Committee, an official group of members who are in charge of placing members on committees. Carter has been honored to serve on this select panel since being elected to Congress.

Congressman Carters leadership ability has been rec-ognized by his colleagues and others. During his first term, Congressman Carter was named one of the Top Five Freshman in Congress by Capitol Hills leading newspaper.

For Congressman Carter, leadership goes far beyond the committee room and onto the House floor, where he has successfully had legislation passed and signed into law by President George W. Bush. Biography of CongressmanZack SpaceOther than spending three years in law school at Ohio State University, Zack Space has lived his entire life in Ohios 18th Congressional District. This experience of living among the people of southeastern Ohio has in-stilled in him the values and the importance of com-munity that are at the heart of the districts sixteen counties.

Those lessons have been bolstered by his own familys ethic of hard work and loyalty. One of his heroes, his paternal grandfather, emigrated from Greece in the early 20th century and served his new country by fight-ing in World War I. His father, Socrates, continued the familys patriotic tradition by serving in the Marines during the Korean War. After the war, his father at-tended Ohio States law school thanks to the GI Bill.

Zack himself learned from an early age the importance of teamwork and community. A high school football star at Dover High School, Zack went on to Kenyon College where he was named a Division III All-Ameri-can. From both coaches and classmates, he was hailed not only for his athleticism, but also for his extraordi-nary leadership and teamwork.

Following college, Zack attended Ohio State where he earned his law degree. Returning home to Dover, he joined his fathers practice -- and throughout the course of his career, he focused on representing the needs of individuals, many of whom had been wronged and had nowhere else to turn. Zack also served the Dover com-munity as a Director for the Mental Retardation and

    Developments Disabilities Board.

Since 2000, Zack has served as Dovers Law Director. As the chief legal representative for the city, Zack has been involved in a host of matters of critical impor-tance, ranging from negotiating contracts to mediating employment disputes to representing the City of Do-ver in court proceedings. As Law Director, he has also supervised the city prosecutors office, provided legal counsel for all city departments, and written numerous city ordinances.

Even as his begins his first term in Congress, his fam-ily continues to be of the utmost importance to him. He and his wife Mary, a Municipal Court Judge for the past 15 years, have been married for 19 years. Their two children, Gina and Nick, now go to the same Dover High School that Zack and Mary attended.

    AHEPA JOURNEY TO GREECE 2007

I have been to Greece before but with this trip, through the excursions and the teachers and chaperones,

I was able to surpass the basic connection of common ancestry and look more towards what everyone

to this day have in common. The arts, architecture, diplomacy, competition, tradition, and legacy are

not simply Greek concepts. They are the same for every civilization that has ever existed. I will take

back to Chicago a new found appreciation for humanity and I will carry this monster of a torch on to my

children and peers. Thank you again for the amazing trip.
