AHECS is the Association of Higher Education Careers Services in Ireland and is the professional body for Careers Advisory and Placement Professionalsworking in higher education in Ireland. Its mission is to lead, support andfacilitate collaboration among higher education career services throughoutIreland, north and south, and be the recognised authority on graduate careerdevelopment, learning and employability. Included among the members are 27 Universities, Higher Education Institutes and Institutes of Technology.

Each year AHECS presents a number of Awards for Excellence at the annualgradireland Awards event in the areas of Employability and Engagement.

Employability Award

The Employability Award recognises and showcases the very best inemployability initiatives implemented by AHECS member careersservices throughout the year. The number, variety and quality ofnominations received over the years is testament to the creativity of careers services in addressing the area of employability and thecontinued importance attributed to this issue. The 2014 EmployabilityAwards will be presented in two categories this year—large career services and small/medium career services. Each category will have a Gold and Silver Award presented to the winner and runner up.

Engagement Award

The Engagement Award recognises and acknowledges the very realand substantial engagement between employers and careers servicesand the beneficial results on undergraduate and graduate recruitmentand employability. This is an opportunity for careers services toacknowledge and highlight the high level of collaboration with employers.

Mary SweeneyMary Sweeney has spent most of her working life in higher education careers services,in particular, the University of Limerick, until her retirement in 2011. As Head ofCareers, she was responsible for the overall development and management of the careers services for students and recent graduates. She has had extensiveexperience in managing undergraduate placement programmes and in thedevelopment of careers education, advice and guidance in higher education. Shehas designed and delivered career development skills modules as part of academiccurriculum, integrating work-based learning into the programme. Her role involvedliaison with graduate employers on all matters relating to graduate recruitmentand development.

Mary has always been actively involved in higher education careers work at anational level and has served as Chairperson of the Association of GraduateCareers Services in Ireland. During her tenure she initiated a series of nationalconferences, bringing together careers specialists, academics and employers, onthe theme of developing employability skills. She still maintains a keen interest in the work of AHECS and the promotion of employability skills.

David Broderick David Broderick is the manager of Ibec’s Export Orientation Programme (EOP),which is an international graduate placement programme. It combines practicalon-the-job experience, with organisations such as Apple, Bord Bia, and TourismIreland, with the opportunity to gain further educational qualifications. Davidhelps companies attract the right talent so that their businesses can grow, maintaintheir international profile and increase their market share.

David has worked with several third level institutions such as DCU, UL and DIT todeliver employability and interview skills to their graduates to help them to identifyand secure the right job.

David holds a BBS (Hons) in Business Management from ITT Dublin, a Diploma inEmployment Law and an MSc in Strategic Management, both from DIT. Beforejoining Ibec in 2007 David worked for Masterfoods and was Vice-President of ITTDublin’s Student Union.

Mark MitchellMark has been the Publisher of gradireland and postgradireland since October2009. Originally from England, Mark has a History degree from the University ofSheffield and a Postgraduate Diploma in Publishing from the London College ofCommunication. Living in Dublin since 1995, Mark is married to Liz and has twodaughters, Aoife and Caitlin.

The Task Groups

AHECS’s mission is to lead, support and facilitate collaboration among HigherEducation careers services. This is achieved through the following task groups.

EmployabilityMembers: Elaine Browne—Chair (UCC), Joanne Holland—AHECS Executive (LIT), DeirdreParker (UCC), Orlaith Tunney (TCD), Josephine Walsh (NUIG), Elaine Kiely (UL),Angela Collins (WIT), Shirley McCaugherty (QUB),Gavin Connell (UL).

This task group provides leadership in the development and promotion of studentemployability in conjunction with careers professionals and with some input fromemployers and academics to enhance the employability of students and graduatesnorth and south. This group’s current priority is the development of best practiceemployability initiatives. The group is developing a comprehensive employabilitypack which can be used by careers advisory professionals in Irish HEIs.

Labour MarketMembers: Linda Lynch—Chair (UCC), Treasa Morgan—AHECS Executive (CIT), Bridie Killoran(GMIT), Catherine Lyster (LYIT), Angela Collins (WIT), Caroline Kennedy (NCIIRL),Linda Gaughran (TCD), Eleanor Donoghue (UCC).

The main objectives of this task group are to create and sustain links with graduateemployers and create a forum for discussion and exchange of information andideas which is of benefit to all parties—employers, academics, students and careersprofessionals alike. The group gathers relevant information about the labourmarket and monitors trends and patterns in graduate recruitment andemployment. The group is also involved in the provision of labour market training events for AHECS members.

This task group, in partnership with AHECS publishing partner, GTI Media provideshigh quality services and products, paper and web based, that support and informthe delivery of careers education, guidance and information to students withinhigher education.

The group is committed to continuing professional development of careersprofessionals working in Higher Education and to sharing best practice andcollaboration within the careers advisory profession. The group does this bydelivering training courses and seminars to its members and the provision ofbursaries to members who pursue additional training and qualifications related to their profession. The group delivers low cost but high impact training in userfriendly ways to members.

This group is committed to developing best practice policy and guidelines for work placement learning and to creating a forum for the sharing of expertise andexperience among Work Placement Practitioners. The group is also interested inpromoting and advocating the role of work placement to all groups concerned and does this by working closely with AHECS Executive on advocacy issues and by promoting work placement generally in the publication of work placementpublications dealing with topics of interest and relevance to internal and externalstakeholders.
