Introduction - Your UV-5RA radio has been programed to provide you with a pre-set channel set-up. You

have a wide variety of frequencies ready to be used simply by entering the channel number. This guide

was designed to help you get started faster and easier than the existing owner’s manual.

Basic Radio Operation -

1. Antenna connection point. 2. Power and Volume knob. Turn the knob to the right (clockwise) to turn the radio on and increase

volume. Turn the knob to the left (counter - clockwise) to decrease the volume and turn the radio off.

3. Information Display Screen.

188 Displays the channel # (There are only channels 0 - 127). The “188” is for

display example purposes only.

25, 75 These would be the last 2 (right most two) places of the frequency setting.

CT If displayed = CTCSS enabled.

DCS If displayed = DCS enabled

+, - If displayed = Direction of frequency shift.

S If displayed = Dual watch enabled

VOX If displayed = VOX enabled

R If displayed = Reverse function enabled

N If displayed = Narrowband enabled

Amount of battery charge remaining.

If displayed = Key pad is locked.

L H L = 1 watt transmission power is set.

H = 4 watt transmission power is set. Which band is active.

If displayed = you are transmitting.

4. Call key -

Push and release the radio shift to FM reception mode. Push and release again the radio shifts back to transceiver mode.

Push and hold the alarm sounds and the LED starts to flash. Press again and the alarm and light turn off.

5. PTT key. Press to transmit. Release immediately when done transmitting. Your radio is programmed to automatically terminate transmitting after 60 seconds.

6. Monitor key.

Press and release the LED light will turn on. Press it again and the LED light will begin to flash. Press it again and the LED light will turn off.

Press and hold the squelch on the active channel will be opened and you will hear whatever is being received by the radio without squelch filtering.

7. Keypad 8. Speaker and microphone. This is a combination of speaker and microphone. If you an accessory

plugged into #9, #8 will be disabled. 9. Accessory jack. This dual-jack is for connecting accessories such as an auxiliary speaker/mic, a lapel

mic and privacy ear piece, programming cable. 10. V/M mode key (VFO/MR). VFO = “frequency mode” where the frequency will be displayed. MR =

“memory mode” where channel information will be displayed.

When in VFO mode pressing and briefly holding the “scan” key (about 1 second) will begin scanning frequencies based on the “frequency step.” Scanning frequencies is slow, only a little better than one (1) step per second.

When in MR mode pressing and briefly holding the “scan” key (about 1 second) will begin scanning channels at the rate of approximately three (3) channels per second.

11. Status LED light.

Red = transmitting.

Green = receiving.

Off = standing-by. 12. A / B select key. Pressing the key will alternately switch between the “A” and “B” bands (top and

bottom display screen). 13. Frequency band select key. When in VFO mode only pressing the band key will switch between the

2m and 70cm frequency bands. 14. Battery. 15. Battery contacts. When looking at the contact:

Middle contact = ground contact.

Right contact = negative contact. 16. Battery release latch. Sometimes you have to press the battery firmly into place to hear the “click”

indicating that the battery is correctly inserted. 17. Lanyard loop. 18. LED light.

1 STEP In Channel Mode - this will act as an entered number to select the channel you wish to jump to. In Programming Mode - allows you set the amount of frequency change.

2 TXP In Channel Mode - this will act as an entered number to select the channel you wish to jump to. In Programming Mode - allows you to set the transmission power level.

3 SAVE In Channel Mode - this will act as an entered number to select the channel you wish to jump to. In Programming Mode - allows you to set the battery sleep cycle.

4 VOX In Channel Mode - this will act as an entered number to select the channel you wish to jump to. In Programming Mode - allows you to turn on the voice operated transmission.

5 WN In Channel Mode - this will act as an entered number to select the channel you wish to jump to. In Programming Mode - allows you to set Wide or Narrow band.

6 ABR In Channel Mode - this will act as an entered number to select the channel you wish to jump to. In Programming Mode - allows you to set the amount of time the display is lit after the operation is completed (i.e. Tx).

7 TDR In Channel Mode - this will act as an entered number to select the channel you wish to jump to. In Programming Mode -allows you to set the dual watch/transceiver dual reception option.

8 BEEP In Channel Mode - this will act as an entered number to select the channel you wish to jump to. In Programming Mode - allows you to set the audible ‘beep’ sound when pressing keys.

9 TOT In Channel Mode - this will act as an entered number to select the channel you wish to jump to. In Programming Mode - allows you to set the transmission timeout timer, limiting the length of transmission.

0 SQL In Channel Mode - this will act as an entered number to select the channel you wish to jump to. In Programming Mode - allows you to set the squelch level.

* SCAN Pressing the key (do not hold down) will change the scan mode from forward to reverse. Pressing and holding the key for 2 seconds will start the scan feature. The radio will scan the channels until an active signal is received, then it will stop on that channel. Pressing the key again for 2 seconds will resume the scan feature.

If the symbol appears on the LCD screen your radio keypad is locked. Press the key for 2 seconds to unlock the radio keypad. If the does not appear on the LCD screen your radio keypad buttons are available. Pressing the key (do not hold down) will shift between low power and high power. You will know if the radio is in low power mode because an “L” will

V/M Pressing this key switches back and forth between the Memory Mode (Channel Mode) and VFO Mode. Your radio has been programmed for Channel Mode. See “VFO Mode” for more information on this function.

A/B Pressing this key switches back and forth between the two available frequency bands. A = The top frequency band B = The bottom frequency band You can listen to an incoming signal on either band. To transmit you must change to that frequency bad. Pressing the A/B key will switch between those two bands.

BAND When in Channel Mode this key is non-functional. When in VFO Mode pressing the key momentarily will switch between the two bands (2m & 70cm) available on the radio.

Although the 2m band starts at 144.000, the radio can actually start at 130.000.

Although the 70cm band starts 420.000, the radio can actually start at 400.000.

When in Channel Mode this key will move up one channel for each press (i.e. channel 8 -> 9). If you press this key when at the top most channel (i.e. 127) it will cycle to channel 1. When in VFO Mode this key will increase the frequency by .005 for each press of the key (example 440.000 -> 440.005). In Programming Mode - allows you to cycle through menu options.

When in Channel Mode this key will move down one channel for each press (i.e. channel 15 ->14). If you press this key when at the lowest most channel (i.e. 1) it will cycle to channel 127. When in VFO Mode this key will increase the frequency by .005 for each press of the key (example 440.000 -> 440.005). In Programming Mode - allows you to cycle through menu options.

EXIT This key is only used when in the programming mode. The key is non-functional when not in programming mode. If you have entered information in the programming mode and want to save that information you must press the “menu” key before exiting. If you press the “exit” key after you have entered programming information, without pressing the “menu” key, all of your changes will be lost.

MENU Pressing this key puts the radio into programming mode. In Programming Mode - you must press this key to save changes, otherwise all changes will be lost.

CALL Pressing this key momentarily switches the radio to the FM band. Pressing is momentarily while in the FM band switches back to normal radio operational bands. Pressing and holding this key down for 1 second will turn on the alarm. The LED light will flash and a siren will sound. The volume of the siren is controlled by the

KEY SYMBOL FUNCTION volume knob. Pressing this key again will turn off the alarm.

MON Pressing the key momentarily will turn on the LED light. Pressing it again will make the LED light flash. Pressing it again will turn off the light. Pressing and hold this key removes all squelch from the frequency you are listening to.

PPT Pressing and holding this key will allow you to transmit. The length of your transmission is also controlled by the “TOT” (time out timer) setting. The default for AHTrimble ComPlans is 60 seconds. Your transmission will automatically cease after 60 seconds of transmitting. This is to prevent a “stuck mic” and covering up the frequency. Keep your messages short and concise. If you need to continue delivering a message say “break” prior to 60 seconds, release the PPT key, then press and hold the PPT key again to continue another 60 seconds of transmitting.

Channel 0 is available for user programming.

Channels 1 - 16 are “tactical” channels. Look at these as working channels. They are all programmed for simplex operation, no tones, scan skip, lower power…except as noted below.

o Channels 1, 9, 10, 12, 14 are programmed for “high” power for when more wattage is needed during transmission to increase distance of transmission.

o Channels 11, 16 are programmed with DCS code for both transmit and receive. This will provide some communications privacy and security.

o Channels 11, 15, 16 are programmed for “narrow band” operations.

Channels 17 - 26 are cross-band repeater channels. These channels are set-up in pairs to work with a cross-band repeater such as a Yaesu 8800 or 8900.

o The channels are paired 17&18, 19&20, 21&22, 23,&24, 25&26. o The first channel in each pair is the transmit channel (17,19,21,23,25). o Each transmit channel has a tone associated with it to open the repeater. Having a tone on

the repeater keeps down unwanted folks from using the repeater. o The second channel in each pair is the receive channel (18,20,22,24,26).

Channels 27 - 85 are used for local or mission specific programming. Each programming file will be different. Refer to your specific file for more information.

Channels 86 - 93 are programmed for generally accepted “prepper channel” usage. o 86 - GMRS Chanel 20 Travel Repeater. GMRS radios can utilize a repeater. This channel is

set-up to hit the repeater while traveling. Theory is, preppers will monitor this GMRS repeater frequency/channel for other preppers who are trying to make contact.

o 87 - PMR Prepper. This 70cm band frequency is set-up as a general prepper frequency. o 88 - Ham UHF Prepper. This 2m band frequency is set-up as a general prepper frequency for

general conversation. o 89 - Ham UHF Calling. This 2m band frequency is set-up as a general prepper frequency to

“call” out to other preppers but generally not for typical conversations.. o o 90 - Ham 2 meter Survivalist o 91 - Ham 2 meter Prepper o 92 - Ham 2 meter Prepper Calling o 93 - Search & Rescue Emergency

Channels 94 - 100 are programmed to receive weather information on the standard NOAA frequencies. You will need to check each channel for information since a different channel is used by NOAA for different areas.

Channels 101 - 105 are used for MURS (Multi-Use Radio System) frequencies. You will probably hear radio traffic from companies such as Walmart using these frequencies. I would strongly suggest not interfering with their radio traffic.

Channels 106 - 112 are used for FRS (Family Radio System) & GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) channels that overlap between the FRS & GMRS channels. FRS/GMRS Channels 1 - 7.

Channels 113 - 119 are used for FRS channels 8 - 14.

Channels 120 - 127 are used for GMRS channels 8 - 15. They may appear to be out of order but actually match the Motorola standard for their GMRS radios. And they are the defacto standard. Each channel sis clearly named for the display screen to eliminate confusion.

Advanced Radio Operation & Topics - 1. Keypad Lock - Your radio is programmed that the keypad is automatically locked when the radio is

turned on. This is to help prevent accidently pressing a key and changing the set-up. To unlock the radio’s keypad press the # key. The keypad will automatically lock again after 8 second on keypad inactivity.

2. Changing Channel - You can change channel on your radio in two ways:

In MR mode select the band you wish to change the channel. Then press the or key to move the channel up/down one channel at a time.

In MR mode select the band you wish to change the channel. Then enter the number of the channel you wish to use. All three digits must be entered even in the leading one or two digits are zeros.

3. Using the keypad to program the radio - I don’t recommend this unless you have no option to

program with a computer and the RT Systems software. If you find you must program via the keypad refer to page #11 of the Baofeng Owner’s Manual or Chapter #4 of the Lidberg Baofeng Owner’s Manual.

4. Antenna Usage -

a. The “stubby” antenna that comes standard with the radio limits the distance of transmitting and receiving of the radio.

b. The 14.5” antenna is far more suited to the 2m and 70cm bands. You will find that you can transmit and receive further with this antenna. You will also find that reception clarity is better as well.

c. The Tram 1185 magnetic mount antenna is the option I recommend for radio operations inside a vehicle.

d. Any other dual-band (2m and 70cm) antenna will work as well. You will want to use a SWR meter to make sure you are within acceptable limits. 1:1.5 is fine.

e. Remember that you must use the MPD antenna adapter cable when using an antenna that has the UHF PL-259 connection.

5. RT Systems Software -

a. Make sure right after you install the software you go to “help” and run “check for updates” right away. This will install any patches, fixes, or updates.

b. Any time you begin the radio programming operation (actually uploading to the radio) remember to download what is already on the radio first. Create a new programming file, then you choose the “communications” option then, “get data from radio”. Now switch over to the file you want to upload to the radio and proceed.

c. Go to “settings” then “preferences” and set preferences as shown below…

d. Under the “general radio settings” there are lots of options. Read the “RT Systems UV-5RA General Radio Settings Documentation” document first. It will help you understand many of the options available to you.

e. If for some reason you get an error when trying to “get” or “send” a file to a radio, follow 5.a. instructions. Then try the software operation once you have checked for, and downloaded, and software updates.

Offset Frequency Depending on the “Offset Direction” this will the default Tx Frequency unless manually entered.

Offset Direction Options – Simplex = The Tx frequency will be the same as the Rx frequency. Minus =The Tx Frequency will be automatically lowered by a default amount for either UHF or VHF. You can manually override the default by picking another options in the list. The default is a Ham standard for that band and there should be no need to change it for a standard repeater operation. Plus = The Tx Frequency will be automatically raised by a default amount for either UHF or VHF. You can manually override the default by picking another options in the list. Split = You can enter the exact Tx frequency you wish to use. No Transmit = Tx Frequency will be cleared and you will not be able to transmit on that channel.

Operating Mode 5 : W/N Options are “FM” or “FM Narrow” FM = Wide band FM Narrow = Narrow band This is the deviation setting of the frequency being used. Wide band allows for a 5KHz deviation, Narrow band only allows for 2.5KHz deviation.

Name This is the 6 character display that will appear on the screen. It is controlled by the general radio setting for A-Band Display and B-Band Display.

Tone Mode Combination of –

10, 11, 12, 13

This setting will control how tones are used for the channel when transmitting and/or receiving. Options - None = No tones are used or required. Tone = You can only set the CTCSS option for transmission. This will trigger/open the "squelch" setting on the receiving radio. Used mostly to open a repeater.

T-SQL = You can set the CTCSS and Rx CTCSS options. CTCSS will trigger/open the "squelch" setting on the receiving radio. RxCTCSS option requires that the radio receives the correct CTCSS code before the incoming transmission can be heard through the radio's speaker. DCS = You can set the DCS and the Rx DCS options. The DCS option triggers/opens the "squelch" setting on the receiving radio. The Rx DCS option requires that the radio receives the correctDCS code before the incoming transmission can be heard through the radio's speaker. D Code = You can set the DCS option and set the DCS Polarity. Polarity is "Normal" and "Reversed". Both the tansmission and rececption of the DCS Code can be set to eaither normal or reversed.

DCS Polarity Options are - "Both N" = Transmit and Receiption are both normal. "TN-RR" = Transmit is normal, reception is reversed. "TR-RN" = Transmit is reversed, reception is normal. "Both R" = Transmit and Receiption are both reversed.

T-DCS = You can set the CTCSS and the Rx DCS options. In addition you can set the DCS Polarity as well.

DCS Polarity Options are - "Both N" = Transmit and Receiption are both normal. "TN-RR" = Transmit is normal, reception is reversed. "TR-RN" = Transmit is reversed, reception is normal. "Both R" = Transmit and Receiption are both reversed.

Rx CTCSS 11 : R-CTCS Receive - Continuous Tone Code Squelch System. The radio you are trying to listen to must transmit the CTCSS code to your radio or will not hear their transmission. Your Rx CTCSS must be the same as their CTCSS code for their transmission to be heard.

DCS 12 : T-DCS Transmit – Digital Code Sequence. Radio transmits the DCS code at the beginning of transmission. Unlocks the squelch set on the receiving radio. This works in conjunction with the receiving radio. Your DCS must be the same as their Rx DCS code for the transmission to be heard. This is used most commonly when working with repeaters.

DCS Polarity Controls how the DCS code is read. Options - Normal Reverse

Tx Power 2 : TXP This is the number of watts the radio will use when transmitting. The more watts a radio uses the further the transmission will go. The more watts a radio uses the more power is consumed and the faster a battery will die. The screen display will show the setting as indicated below. UV-5RA options – “L” = 1 watt, “H” = “4” watts UV-5RMHP options – “L” = 1 watt, “M” = “4” watts, “H” = “7” watts

Scan Add Control whether the radio will scan this channel when the scan function is enabled. Options – Scan = Radio will scan this channel. Skip = Radio will not scan this channel, it will skip this channel.

Busy Lock When this channel is in use (another radio is transmitting) the PPT button is disabled and the radio cannot transmit on the channel.

PPT-ID 19 : PPT-ID Controls when the S-Code is transmitted. OFF = No S-Code is sent.

Battery Save 3 : SAVE 1:2 This is a “sleep cycle” control. It allows for reduced battery usage. Options – OFF, 1:1 – 1:4. OFF will keep the radio “awake” and more battery usage. 1:4 lets the radio “sleep” 4 cycles and “awake” 1 cycle. Lengths battery life, but the higher the awake/sleep cycle, the more likely you might miss the first word of a message.

Backlight (ABR) 6 : ABR 5 SECONDS This is the amount of time, in seconds, that the screen backlighting will stay on. Settings are “OFF” up to “20” The longer the backlight stays on the faster the battery discharges.

Rx Backlight 30 : RX-LED BLUE Color of screen backlight while radio is receiving a transmission. Options – Off Blue Orange Purple

Tx Backlight 31 : TX-LED ORANGE Color of screen backlight while radio is transmitting. Options – Off Blue Orange Purple

Wait Backlight 29 : WT-LED OFF Color of screen backlight while radio is in “wait” mode. Options – Off Blue Orange Purple OFF is chosen to conserve battery power.

PTT Delay 20 : PPT-LT 0 Delay (in ms) of transmitting the S-code. 0 – 30 ms are options. Tied to “DTMF Encode” & “PPT-ID”. If “PPT-ID” is set to OFF, this delay is not used, whether it is set or not.

Roger 39 : ROGER OFF Transmits a “beep” to let others know that your transmission has begun and/or ended. Options – OFF = no beep is transmitted Begin = beep is transmitted at the beginning of a transmission. End = beep is transmitted at the end of a transmission. Begin/End = beep is transmitted at the beginning and end of a transmission.

Scan Resume 18 : SC-REV TIME Method for scanning to resume. Time = scanning resumed after a fixed time. Carrier Wave = scanning resumed after current active signal is lost (stops). Search = Scanning doesn’t resume.

Squelch Level 0 : SQL 5 Squelch: Filters out incoming “noise”. Higher # = stronger the signal needed to come through. 0 will let all noise come through. 9 requires a very strong signal to come through and be heard. If set at 0 then the alarm won’t work. Factory default = 5

Time Out Timer 9 : TOT 60 SECONDS Transmission time out timer. This setting controls a feature that automatically stops transmission after “X” number of seconds. This prevents excessively long transmissions. It will also prevent a stuck PPT key (a.k.a.

The setting of 60 Seconds allows for a person to transmit a message for 60 seconds before the radio will automatically terminate the transmission regardless if the PPT key is depressed or not. Options are: 15 – 600 seconds.

Tx Dual Watch 34 : TDR-AB OFF Transceiver Dual Reception. This setting is the default band that the radio returns to after a signal (transmission) disappears. Options – OFF Band A Band B This setting could be useful if one band is a “priority” and you want to monitor that band more than the other.

Tail Tone 35 : STE OFF Transceiver Squelch Tail Elimination. Eliminates squelch tail noise when UV-5R radios are communicating directly between each other. Tied to the T-DCS option. T-DCS = OFF = 55Hz tone for .25 secs when PPT is released. T-DCS = anything but OFF = 134.4 Hz tone for .25 secs when PPT is released. Must be set to OFF when communicating through a repeater.

Tail Tone (Repeater)

36 : RP-STE OFF Repeater Squelch Tail Elimination. Used to eliminate squelch tail noise when communicating through a repeater. This is the amount of squelch that is applied. Options – OFF, 1 – 10. Tied to “Tail Tone” & “Tail Tone Delay”.

Tail Tone Delay 37 : RPT-RL OFF Number of ms (milliseconds) after the PPT is released till the Tail Tone is transmitted. Options are OFF, 1 – 10. Tied to “Tail Tone” & “Tail Tone Repeater”

DT-ST = Side tones are heard when DTMF codes are manually keyed. ANI-ST = Side tones are heard when DTMF codes are automatically keyed. DT-ANI = All DTMF side tones are heard.

Note on ANI-ID usage: This area, ANI-ID, is used mostly in the business or emergency services world. It involves radios sending individual radio identifiers each time a transmission is made. For the vast majority of radio users there is no actual value for using this option that I can see. Also, if it were to be used properly, you would have to change the ANI-ID - NUMBER with a unique number each time you programmed a radio. That would make if cumbersome when programming more than one radio. If you are going to use this group of feature, make sure you have a clearly defined mission for doing so. And, make sure it makes sense.
