AbstRAct
e benecial eect of vermicompost on yield of some cultivars
has been documented, but there is little information about its
eect when it is combined with stress-inducing factors. e
objective of this study was to evaluate the combined eect of
vermicompost and water stress on bean (Phaseolus vulgaris
L.) yield with the hypothesis that vermicompost modies the
soil-plant system and diminishes the eect of water decit.
In greenhouse, the yield of two common bean cultivars
(drought-susceptible and tolerant to drought) was assessed
in soil with or without 1.5 % and 3 % of vermicompost, with
irrigation in the complete cycle and its suspension, starting
from owering. e experimental design was completely
randomized with factorial arrangement and ve replications.
Production of inorescence, pods, and seeds were evaluated.
Under both conditions of irrigation and cultivars, the addition
of 3 % of vermicompost increased the total of inflorescence
by 31 %, the number of produced pods by 36 %, 16 % that
of harvested pods, 34 % in number of seeds and 33 % in
seed biomass (yield) per plant. Negative eect of suspending
irrigation was observed on the number of pods and seeds and
on seed yield; however, with 3 % of vermicompost susceptible
and tolerant cultivar increased the number of pods by 17 and
15 %, as well as the amount of seeds by 28 and 48 %, and seed
yield by 15 and 50 %. Interactions between factors showed
dierent reaction of cultivars to water stress, vermicompost,
and their combination. It was observed that vermicompost
in substrate modies the soil-plant system and diminishes the
negative reaction of common bean crops to water stress, since
it signicantly increases their yield.
Key words: stress, owering, seed, modifed substrate, pods.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) in Mxicooccupies the second place in cultivated area, and the sixth place by production value; itsimportance is ancient and the base o ood supply, and the source o nutrients since Pre-Hispanic times(Celis-Velazquez et al., 2010). Te production o thiscrop is aected by drought, since about 85 % o thearea used in Mxico to common bean cultivation islocated in regions with seasonal rainall with requentperiods o intermittent or terminal drought (Acosta-Daz et al., 2003), and shallow soils with low contento organic matter and limited water retainingcapacity (Rosales-Serna et al., 2000). Water stressin the reproductive phase o common bean (Acosta-Daz et al., 2003) and other legumes (chickpea:
Cicer arietinum L.; broad bean: Vicia faba L.; soybean: Glycine max L.) diminishes yield in largerproportion than when only the vegetative period isaected; during owering periods, pod ormation, and grain-flling stages the amount o pods and yieldare reduced up to 50 and 72 % depending on theintensity o the water defcit and tolerance o thecultivar (Liu et al., 2004; Ghassemi-Golezani et al.,2009; Fanget al., 2010).
Plant breeding is an option to stabilize thedierences among cultivars and to increase commonbean yield under water stress, partly by means o
identiying genotypes with small dierence in grainyield under both irrigation and rained conditions(Rosales-Serna et al., 2000). Nevertheless, thecomplexity o phenotype response to water defcitmakes improvement or drought tolerance dicult.Assessment o cultivars with common geneticorigin and contrasting response to drought stresshas allowed identiying morphological, physiologic, and biochemical changes, typical o the speciesand contrasting among cultivars (Pea-Valdivia etal.,2005).
Addition o small amounts o organic input tothe soil increases its capacity o water retention, dueto positive correlation between content o organicmatter and available water (Hudson, 1994; Julca-Otiniano et al., 2006). Regarding this, applicationo vermicompost increases soil organic matter andimproves some o its physical characteristics, such asthe amount o hydrostable aggregates, bulk density, and porosity, which promote the ow o air and

a 30 C.
to Sierra; aumentarondiez generaciones durante 1988 y 1990
water, and plant root development. But the eects overmicompost depend on its biochemical nature andthe level o humifcation, quantity, and requencyo its application, soil properties, climate, andagricultural practices (Azarmi et al., 2008; Abiven etal., 2009; ejadaet al., 2009).
Te objective o this study was to evaluate theeect o vermicompost addition to the soil andin common bean yield o plants growing underconditions o water stress during the reproductivestage. Te hypothesis was that vermicompostmodifes the soil-plant system, e.g. it increases waterretention by increment o organic matter, anddiminishes the eect o water defcit on perormanceand its components.

Te research was carried out in the summer 2009 in a
greenhouse at the Colegio de Postgraduados, Campus Montecillo,
excoco, Estado de Mxico (19 27 N, 98 54 W, at 2220 m
above sea level). Relative humidity o the greenhouse, evaluated
with a measuring device, type data logger (HOBO U12-O11,
USA) uctuated between 47 and 65 % during the study. Te
temperature o recently exposed leaves was taken as control o the
environment above the plant, and in all the treatments between
14:00 and 15:00 h during the crop cycle, it was measured with
an inrared sensor thermometer (INFRAPRO1 35639-00,
OAKON, USA), and the recorded values were between 25
and 30 C.Common bean cultivars 92 and 122 were utilized, described as
tolerant and susceptible to drought, and with growth habit type
II. Te cultivars are related and derived rom F3 amilies crossing
parents o AC1028 Pinto Sierra; ten generations were increased
during 1988 and 1990 (Ramrez-Vallejo and Kelly, 1998) and
selected based on their physiologic, morphological perormance,
and seed yield under conditions o water stress in soil and o
Mexican high valleys (Rodrguez, 2008).
Te seeds were reproduced at Campus Montecillo o the
Colegio de Postgraduados, in the spring-summer cycle o 2008.
Te harvested seeds o both cultivars had similar (p>0.05)humidity (10.09 %) and germination (84.5 %), and those o cv.
122 weighed 28 % more (p0.05) than those o cv. 92 (0.32
and 0.26 g).
Vermicompost was acquired at the Mdulo de Abonos

(Fraxinus excelsior) y estircol bovino (40:20:40).
and cattle manure (40:20:40). Used soil was extracted rom
the frst 20 cm o depth rom an agricultural lot o excoco,
Mxico, its texture was sandy loam. Te assessed mixtures
were prepared with 1.5 and 3 % o vermicompost (40 and 80 t
ha-1). Physical and chemical characteristics o the soil and the
mixtures were assessed in the area o Soil Physics o the Colegio
de Postgraduados, Montecillo,. Water pH was 7.4 and electricconductivity o 0.53 dS m-1, values within the intervals used
or classifcation o irrigation water quality (Ayers and Wescot,
1985). Pests or diseases were not detected in the plants during
the study.
Te experimental design was completely randomized with
actorial arrangement o treatments and fve replications. Te
studied actors and levels were: 1) cultivar or common bean
row, susceptible (cv. 122) and tolerant (cv. 92) to drought;
2) irrigation regime, during the complete plant growth cycle
(control) and suspension o irrigation since owering stage and
until harvest; and 3) substrate, vermicompost in soil (0, 1.5, and
3 %). Tere were 12 treatments and 60 experimental units. Te
experimental unit was a pot with two plants, and yield variables
are expressed per plant.
Tree seeds o the cultivars were sown in owerpots o 12 L
and 10 kg capacity o each o the three substrates. When the
frst trioliolate lea was exposed, the plant was thinned in order
to maintain those two plants with homogeneous growth and
greater vigor. Te plants were kept under sucient irrigation to
conserve the substrate with usable humidity between 80 and 100 %,
which was verifed by gravimetric control o the pots.
Ater 59 d o sowing and when more than 50 % o the plants
were in the owering period, two groups o containers o eachsubstrate and cultivar were organized: one o them was kept with
the same irrigation regime, and in the other one irrigation was
suspended until the crop had reached physiological maturity.
Inorescence and pods were counted weekly starting 50 d ater
sowing (DDS) and until harvesting in three randomly selected
experimental units, rom every treatment. Analysis o variance
(ANOVA) o the data was conducted with GLM procedure o
SAS, version 9, and the assumptions o the design o repeated
measurements were made with the assumptions o split plots
design, where the actorial combinations are equivalent to the
eect o complete plots and the measurements repeated in time
to the eect o subplots (Kuehl, 2001). Signifcance o the eects
o principal actors and their interactions was obtained, and
means comparison means was carried out with the ukey test
(p0.05).
Pods were harvested by hand at 98 DDS in the treatments
with irrigation suspension, and those o continuous irrigation
at 125 DDS. otal pods, empty and normal ones, were assessed;
seeds per pod, and seed biomass (g) per plant were also quantifed.
Data were processed by ANOVA and by ukey test (p0.05). In

Te hypothesis o diminution o water stress onyield and its components by vermicompost led tothe evaluation o substrate physical and chemicalproperties and its changes due to vermicompost(able 1). Contrasting with the observations madeby Abiven et al. (2009), missing signifcance odiminution o apparent density and o increasingorganic matter by 3 % o vermicompost, wasoutstanding. However the changes o physical andchemical soil characteristics, or example, instabilityo its structure by the monovalent cations, such as Na+
by addition o compost, depend on the compositiono the latter and the applied quantity (ejada et al.,2009). In contrast to the aoresaid, porosity increasedsignifcantly (up to 7 %) and in proportion tovermicompost (able 1), thus, air and water ow maybe avored, as well as plant root development (Abivenet al., 2009). Te signifcant increment o permanentwilting point (PMP) did not show obvious relationwith usable humidity or with the water layer (able1). Tis indicates that the water layer, required toreach the content corresponding to usable water, isdierent in every substrate and the control.

Te oweringpattern was unequal among cultivars (Figure 1 A-B)by the eect o vermicompost, water shortage, andbecause o their combination, even though the meanquantity o inorescences during the cycle was similaramong them. Cultivar 122, drought- susceptible, had between 46 and 56 % o the largest number oinorescence at 50 DDS, reaching the maximum oowering at 57 DDS; then it declined simultaneouslyand independently o substrate and water availability(Figure 1 A). On the contrary, owering ocv. 92,
drought-tolerant, not depending on substrate andwater condition, and under any condition reachedthe peak o owering at 57 DDS; urthermore, thehighest proportion o inorescences was maintainedconstant or 7 d, in the treatments with 1.5 % overmicompost and irrigation suspension, 3 % overmicompost and irrigation, and in the control withwater shortage (Figure 1 B). Tese results show thatvermicompost and water restriction in soil modifedowering phenology (stage R6; Fernndez et al.,1983) only in cv. 92.
Pod production or stage R7 (Fernndez et al.,
1983) was signifcantly larger in cv. 122 (24 %)than in 92, regardless o humidity condition andvermicompost in substrate, although 3 % increasedpod production signifcantly between 29 and 57 %independently o cultivar and water condition (able2). Production o pods in time also contrastedamong the cultivars. Tus, in cv.122 the productionwas aster and simultaneous among its treatments, reached the highest values at 64 DDS and thendeclined, regardless o cultivar condition, and in cv.92, the increment was gradual ater 50 DDS and
reached the peak in the controls at 70 DDS and inother treatments until 78 DDS, notwithstandingwater availability and presence o vermicompost.Te exception was the treatment with 3 % overmicompost and irrigation suspension, whichreached the peak at 57 DDS and then declinedsignifcantly (Figure 1 C-D). Tese results indicatethat the combination o vermicompost with waterrestriction in substrate modifed phenology o the

Signifcant interactions (p0.01) detectedbetween cultivar and production time and betweenvermicompost concentration and the time o podproduction indicate that pod production depended
on the cultivar, the duration o reproductive stage, and on vermicompost content. Nevertheless, thenumber o pods produced during the crop cycleincreased with vermicompost content (Figure 1C-D).

However, this was not the case o pod abscissionin cv. 122, ater having reached the highest value, since the dropping was similar in the controls withand without water shortage, which seems to betypical o the cultivar (Figure 1C). Both cultivarsreached simultaneously physiological maturity 98and 125 DDS in the treatments with or withoutirrigation suspension, which may partly be due tothe act that both have the same growth habit (typeII). In this study, it was observed that water shortageadvanced plant maturation o both cultivars, regardless o vermicompost presence, although some
steps previous to seed maturation may have been nosynchronic among the cultivars, such as in the case othe beginning o anthesis (stage R5), owering, andpod ormation (R6 and R7), lower and higher in cv.92 compared to 122 (Figure 1 C-D).

contrasted among them. Tus, the amount o emptypods may have one o the major eects, since theplant assigns resources to its development, but thesedo not transorm into seed. On average, cv. 122produced nearly twice the pods with respect to cv.92;in consequence the frst had 22 % greater seed yield
than the latter, which may be due to the propertieso the genotype, since the origin o cv.122 had seedswith higher weight (able 2).
Water shortage aected negative pod productionand regardless o substrate or cultivar, since itdiminished 25 %, and only 20 % o the harvestedpods were normal (in other words: well developed, without deormations and without aborted seeds).Furthermore water restriction diminished seedproduction, and yield declined to about 50 %,compared to the production under continuous
irrigation (able 2).Te results o the study proved the positiveeect o vermicompost, independently o wateravailability and the cultivar, since the two assessedproportions increased the number o harvested podsby 15 %. Although with 3 % o vermicompostthe same amount o empty pods was produced, with and without it; the quantity o seeds perplant (22 to 34 %) and their biomass or yield (20-33 %) increased with 1.5 and 3 % o vermicompost(able 2). Increment o ruits and seeds, producedby vermicompost, regardless o cultivar and water
availability (able 2), may be explained as the resulto its contribution o some compounds, such ashumic acids and phytohormones (Arancon et al.,2006) and microbial activity, which advance growthand plant development (Roy et al., 2010) such ascommon bean (Fernndez-Luqueo et al., 2010)In the present study, substrate pH diminished withan additional amount o vermicompost (able 1),which may increase availability o macro- and micro-nutrients (Azarmi et al., 2008).
Te analysis o individual actors showed that
cv. 122 on average produced 41 % more pods withirrigation limitation, with and without vermicompost,compared to cv. 92; however, the positive eecto vermicompost was observed in both cultivarsand water conditions, since with irrigation and itssuspension, pod production increased between 11and 25 % (Figure 2 A-B). It was outstanding that thecv. 122 (drought-susceptible) irrigation suspensionand vermicompost may have generated largeramount o pods than that o cv. 92 (Figure 2 A-B);

but 43 % o them were empty (Figure 2 C-D). Teaorementioned indicates that cv. 92, with the largestproportions o pods with normal seeds (29 %) underconditions o water stress has better assignment ororming these reproductive structures, and those thatare developing contain normal seeds.
Interaction between cultivar and irrigationcondition or the total o harvested pods and normalpods was signifcant, which indicates that theproduction o these structures and their attributesdepended on drought-tolerance o the cultivar as wellas on water availability.
Te mechanisms by which water stress aects thedevelopment o the reproductive structures are partlyknown. Regarding this, low soil water potentialsaect cell division, protein synthesis, and metabolismo carbohydrates, diminishing growth or stopping it

In the present study the eectswere expressed and quantifed in inorescence, pods, and seeds, due to the act that irrigation suspensionbegan with owering. It has also been suggestedthat within certain limits the drop o water potentialo the tissues, such as pods and seeds, even the lack
o assimilates by water stress does not have impacton growth, and the highest eect is generated byroot signals, which activate numerous physiologicalprocesses (Leport et al., 2006).
Seed yield o the controls with irrigation wassimilar; in both, with 1.5 and 3 % o vermicompostyield increased between 14 and 32 %. Water stress, lacking vermicompost, diminished yield o bothcultivars (between 25 and 82 %); in contrast, itspresence was positive in the reaction to water defcitand became evident as an increment o number o
seeds (28 % in cv. 122 and 48 % in cv. 92) and byyield amount (up to 30 % and 50 % with 3 % overmicompost in cv. 122 and 92) in comparison withthe controls the treatments without vermcompostand suspension o irrigation (Figure 3 A-D). Numbero seeds and size o common bean seeds are yieldcomponents little associated to drought tolerance, since they are relatively stable characteristics andlittle aected by stress, caused by the environment;on the contrary, those components are more aectedby the duration o the reproductive period (Martnezet al., 2007). Te present study showed that common
bean reproductive phenology was reduced about onemonth by the eect o water restriction, which backsthe idea that water use eciency was directed to plantsurvival, and not to yield maintenance or increment.Interaction between cultivar and irrigation conditionwas signifcant or the number o seeds and indicatesthat seed production depends on drought-toleranceas well as on water availability.
Te original size o the largest seed o cv. 122(22 %) with respect to cv. 92 was maintained inthe controls under irrigation; water stress, however,
modifed this character (able 3). Although themean seed size o both cultivars diminished atsuspending irrigation, it was considerably largerin the drought-tolerant cultivar (29 %), comparedto the one susceptible to drought (17 %), and thepresence o vermicompost in soil maintained thisdierence constant. Besides diminishing the meanseed size, water defcit modifed the proportions oseed size in both cultivars (results not shown). Tis

condition, regardless o vermicompost in substrate, increased the requency o seeds with mass about 250mg and diminished or eliminated that o larger mass.
Te positive eect o vermicompost on yieldmay partly be due to the increase o plant structurebiomass, storing photoassimilates beore stress periodand going to cover the demand or the developmento reproductive structures. Regarding this, Roy etal. (2010) indicate that 8 % o vermicompost in
substrate increased chlorophyll content in commonbean leaves, related to biomass accumulation.Fernndez-Luqueo et al. (2010) point out thatvermicompost addition to soil increased commonbean harvest, which was positively related to biomassproduction and increment o available N. Accordingto Cavender et al.(2003), organic input incorporatedto soil generally improves soil ertility. In the presentstudy, the changes in substrate with vermicompost

mixtures may reer to the content o interchangeablecations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) which in turn is partly relatedto electric conductivity signifcantly higher thanthe substrates with vermicompost. Organic matterwas maintained without considerable change, butthere is evidence that the contribution o microbialpopulation o vermicompost, assessed by means odehydrogenase activity, promotes the degradationprocesses o organic matter, which contributes toincreasing crop yield (Arancon et al., 2005).
conclusIons
Te modifcation o some physical and chemicalsoil properties, such as increment o porosity, diminution o water layer, pH diminution, andincrease o electric conductivity, promoted byvermicompost, support the hypothesis that it modifesthe plant-soil system and reduces the eect o waterstress, which may be evaluated by positive eects onyield and their components in common bean. Onthe other hand, vermicompost did not change otherphysical and chemical properties o the substrate, suchas PMP, usable water and feld capacity. Nevertheless, the results support the hypothesis that it does modiythe plant-soil system and has repercussion on betterplant use o limiting water in the substrate. However, the eect o each assessed actor (cultivar, irrigationregimen, and substrate vermicompost concentration)and the signifcant interaction o the three actorsconfrm the complexity o the generated reactions.
