TIP OF THE MONTH:How to Increase Driver Distance

The most common question asked by individuals looking to improve their golf game is “how do I get more distance with my driver?” Try these few tip to help increase distance and improve your length:

• Take a slightly wider stance than normal for a more stable base and to encourage a bit of extra resistance in the backswing.

• Tip the right shoulder down a bit more. Place about 60% of your weight on your right side at address (vice versa for the left-handed golfer).

• You can position the ball slightly further forward (right opposite the big toe) and tee it up slightly higher. I wouldn’t encourage this when hitting into a head wind however.

• Take a big shoulder rotation in the backswing by making sure the left shoulder comes over and across the right knee cap (vice versa for the left-handed golfer).

• Make sure there is plenty of resistance in the hips and legs. Try to keep your right knee slightly bent on the back swing, so it does not straighten or lock.

• At the top of the backswing, drive the body weight across by focusing on your belt buckle. Feel as though you are spinning the belt buckle around, like a wheel, as quickly as possible to face your target. This is a very different feeling from starting the downswing with the hands and arms.

• Maintain a good rhythm and timing throughout the swing. Any loss of balance will probably result in a poor strike on the ball – which negates everything else you do!

US OPEN ROUND ROBINSaturday, August 31st

The Haig Point Tennis Center is pleased to announce the US Open Round Robin will be held on Saturday, August 31 from 9:00 – 11:00. This Labor Day event is always a lot of fun.

DON'T GET WETDuring these warm summer days, the idea of playing tennis in a swimming pool sounds pretty good. Playing in a pool will cool you off but it will also improve your volley. Too often when players hit their volleys, their racquet drops down to their feet on the way to the ball. Imagine you are standing in waist-deep water in the pool. As you move to the ball make sure your racquet stays out of the water. To make sure your racquet takes the shortest route to the ball, keep your racquet above the water.

WATER AEROBICSClasses will be held on Tuesday and Thursdays at 11:00 am – 12:00 pm at the Tennis Center Adult Pool. This is a great way to stay in shape on warm summer days.

THE SPORT OF A LIFETIMETennis has been called the sport of a lifetime for good reason. It’s easy, fun and a great way to spend time with your friends. The Tennis Center offers a great “Back to Basics” program designed just for the returning or new tennis player. Contact the tennis center for more details.

Equestriant's been a busy summer at the Equestrian Center for both

staff and horses! With daily lessons and oceanfront rides,

our horses have been working hard to provide fun and

memorable experiences for both young and old. We are

pleased that this has been the most profitable summer on

record for the equestrian program. We will continue our

summer hours throughout the month of August (Monday

- Saturday 8 am - 12 pm and 3 pm -7 pm). Please note

horses will not be ridden between the hours of 12 - 4 pm

if the heat index continues to maintain it's current course.

All lessons and rides will take place between early morning

and later afternoon hours. Additionally, the Haig Point

lesson horses will be receiving their post summer time

off this month as well. This means that lessons will take a

temporary halt between August 7th - 21st. Pony rides and

kid's equestrian services can still be arranged for those

guests who will only be at Haig Point during those dates.

Give us a call at 843-341-8191 to schedule activities.

In addition to our amazing animals that make our

program what it is, I would like to highlight one of our

staff members here at the equestrian center who will be

taking a more active role in teaching riding lessons of all

levels. Alexa Clark began working here at Haig Point in

July of 2019. This month, Alexa will be attending her

Registered Therapeutic Riding Instructor Certification at

Fieldstone Farm TRC in Bainbridge, Ohio. Two years of

prep work, countless hours of student teaching, online

exams, and years of riding experience have set her up

for success. Alexa's certification will come from the

Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship

(PATH) which was formed in 1969 and previously known as

North American Riding for the Handicapped Association.

This association promotes equine-assisted activities and

therapies (EAAT) for individuals with special needs. The

certification is combined with a hands on workshop and

includes a riding test as well as learning new teaching

techniques and intake procedures. She will also be

required to create, execute, and evaluate a lesson plan

as the final portion of the certification. This certification

also gives Alexa not only national recognition as a teaching

professional for those with special needs, but many skills

and tools necessary to design and implement a successful

lesson program for all types of riders, those with disabilities

and those without. Alexa's knowledge of riding and

instruction began back in college where she rode on the

dressage team at Lake Erie College. She is an exceptional

teacher and we are fortunate to have her as part of the Haig

Point family.
