Your Exercise and Activity

• Genetic differences can impact how each individual’s body responds to certain types of exercises. They also play a key role in understanding which exercises and/or activities one will excel at, benefit from, and enjoy.

• Variations in fast and slow twitch muscle fibers impact the body’s metabolic output in response to exercise and activity:

- Fast twitch fibers use anaerobic metabolism to create fuel and are better for short bursts of strength or speed (fatigue more quickly).

- Slow twitch fibers are more efficient at using oxygen to generate fuel for continuous muscle contraction (will fatigue more slowly).

Your Exercise and Activity

• Power vs. Endurance Ratio

- Power:• Exercises that recruit more fast twitch fibers.• Examples: weight training, resistance training,

body weight exercises, Yoga, band work, etc.

- Endurance:• Exercises that recruit slow twitch muscle fibers.• Examples: long-distance running, swimming,

cycling, high rep sets, interval training, etc.

By unlocking unique biology one will soon know what exercises they can to do, or not do, to safely

and efficiently achieve optimal health in the shortest amount of time & with the least amount of effort.

Power vs. Endurance Ratio

• By adhering to their 60 Power/40 Endurance “Exercise Ratio,” this individual may experience noticeable improvements in:

- Athletic performance- Metabolic performance (fat burn)- Muscle response (increase lean mass)- Blood pressure + cholesterol- Lower risk of injury & faster recovery- Stress & anxiety reduction- Enjoyment of exercise/activity- …and much more!

• *Important reminder: When individual clients understand their unique genetic exercise percentages, they are better able to tailor workouts and fitness routines to make overall health improvements, progress toward their goals, increase performance measures, decrease margins (i.e. competitive athletes), and achieve desired results faster!

Your Exercise and Activity

• Additional genetic variations on the Premium Test:

- Injury and Recovery:• Depending on collagen production and

repair-related hormones, some are at greater risk of injury than others.

• Warm-ups and cool-downs can be adjusted.• Wraps and ice-packs can reduce risk.• Changes can be made to duration and

frequency of exercise to reduce risk.

- Blood Pressure:• Blood pressure is impacted by exercise, but

some may see greater benefit than others.• Those with reduced benefit should exercise

more to reach their blood pressure goals.

Genetics are not the whole story but

it's clear genetics can play a big role

✓ Aerobic Fitness = 40 to 50% genetic | Power + Muscle Growth = 50 to 60% genetic

✓ Ratio of “slow twitch” and “fast twitch” muscle fibers = approx. 45% genetic

✓ Propensity to compete in athletics = approx. 66% genetic

✓ For comparison, height (at most) = approx. 60% genetic

*Data according to Heritage Family Study, UK Twin Studies, and the Million Swedish Men Study

✓ Your genetic make-up makes the greatest difference on the margins you achieve.

✓ SNPs have a relatively small effect size (1 to 2%), which is especially important for athletes.

✓ The experience of exercise is especially important for “everyday” women & men.

✓ Genetics can grant insight and a sense of direction to get the most out of your workouts.

The Value of Genetics for Fitness

✓ Think about FAT LOSS vs WEIGHT LOSS!

✓ Nutrition is the biggest factor in losing weight, but weight loss without exercise = muscle loss.

✓ The greatest health & wellness benefit is to approach weight loss from both angles.

✓ Muscle is metabolically active and increases caloric burn.

✓ Work to maximize your muscle growth and muscle recovery.

✓ Work to develop your fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscle fibers.

✓ Know your genetic predispositions to stay on track and improve your margins for success!
