Agriculture in Maryland

Summary for 2017

Page 2: Agriculture in Maryland - USDA · Thank you for responding to the 2017 Census of Agriculture. Your answers were invaluable to Maryland and U.S. agriculture. They help grow your farm’s

The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) mission is to provide timely, accurate and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture. The statistics in this publication will be used to administer and help support USDA farm programs, to determine the feasibility of new ventures, and to aid research and development projects throughout the state.

The Maryland farmers whom voluntarily cooperated throughout the state and completed surveys during this past year, I would like to express my gratitude. Our partners at the University of Maryland Extension, our federal partners at the local Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service, and to all the dedicated employees of the Maryland Department of Agriculture thank you for your support. In addition, I would like

to thank our field enumerators that collected data throughout the year, without them this report would not be possible.

Thank you for responding to the 2017 Census of Agriculture. Your answers were invaluable to Maryland and U.S. agriculture. They help grow your farm’s future, shape farm programs, and boost services for communities and the industry.

The census highlights will be published in February 2019, containing land use and ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income, expenditures, and other topics. This information will be used by all those who serve farmers and rural communities from federal, state and local governments to agribusinesses and trade associations. For example, legislators use the data when shaping farm policy and agribusinesses factor it into their planning efforts. For more information on the census, visit www.agcensus.usda.gov.

If you would like additional information on NASS Maryland field office, please visit the following website: www.nass.usda.gov/Statistics_by_State/Maryland. Your comments regarding our programs and publications are always welcomed, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail, telephone, or personal visit.

Sincerely,

Dale P. Hawks Maryland/Delaware State Statistician

2 Beginning in 2016, Total Production and Utilized Production were estimated for each crop. In previous years, estimates were made for Production, which represented the portion of the crop that was harvested and sold. This most closely represents the Utilized Production in the current report and can be used for comparison.

3 Beginning in 2016, Harvested Not Sold estimates were added to the estimating program. This represents the difference between Total Production (the amount of the crop harvested from the field) and Utilized Production (the amount of the crop that was sold).
