Maryland Agriculture

Secretary

As Secretary of Agriculture, I am honored to represent the industry whose work and contributions are so carefully reported upon in this annual

summary by our partners at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). For decades, NASS has provided unbiased, reliable agricultural data and is universally recognized as a source of objective information. Local, state and national leaders need relevant, credible, objective information to make good laws and policies that support American farmers. This annual report that NASS publishes highlighting Maryland agriculture helps leaders across the spectrum both understand the significance of this industry on our state’s economy as well as its importance to our daily lives. Few industries impact every person in the country as comprehensively and frequently as agriculture does. It is critical that the decisions we make that impact this industry are done with the most accurate information possible. NASS has long provided such information and we are pleased to count them among our closest colleagues. This summary provides a snapshot of our largest sectors. Additional information can be found on the NASS website and I urge anyone interested in detailed information to visit www.nass.usda.gov. Please take the time to respond to the 2017 Census of Agriculture. Taken every five years, it’s a complete count of U.S. farms and the people who operate them. Remember, the Census of Agriculture is your voice, your future, and your opportunity. Help rural America. Be counted. Respond by February 2018. On behalf of Maryland agriculture, I thank the NASS staff for their professionalism and commitment to accurate data and to our state’s most important industry.

Dale P. Hawks

State Statistician The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) mission is to provide timely, accurate and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture. The statistics in this

publication will be used to administer and help support USDA farm programs, to determine the feasibility of new ventures, and to aid research and development projects throughout the state. The Maryland farmers whom voluntarily cooperated throughout the state and completed surveys during this past year, I would like to express my gratitude. Our partners at the University of Maryland Extension, our federal partners at the local Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service, and to all the dedicated employees of the Maryland Department of Agriculture thank you for your support. In addition, I would like to thank our field enumerators that collected data throughout the year, without them this report would not be possible. Be counted. Mailing of the 2017 Census of Agriculture will be in December 2017. Your answers to the Census of Agriculture matter. They help grow your farm’s future, shape farm programs, and boost services for communities and the industry. The Census highlights land use and ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income, expenditures, and other topics. This information is used by all those who serve farmers and rural communities from federal, state and local governments to agribusinesses and trade associations. For example, legislators use the data when shaping farm policy and agribusinesses factor it into their planning efforts. For more information or to try the improved online questionnaire, visit www.agcensus.usda.gov. If you would like additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail, telephone, or personal visit; your comments regarding our programs and publications are always welcomed.

for fresh and processing production and previous years data, please reference the Vegetables Annual Summary at www.nass.usda.gov

2 Beginning in 2016, Total Production and Utilized Production were estimated for each crop. In previous years, estimates were made for Production, which represented the portion of the crop that was harvested and sold. This most closely represents the Utilized Production in the current report and can be used for comparison.

3 Beginning in 2016, Harvested Not Sold estimates were added to the estimating program. This represents the difference between Total Production (the amount of the crop harvested from the field) and Utilized Production (the amount of the crop that was sold).
