USDA is an equal opportunity provider, lender and employer.
Dear Friends,
Here at USDA’S National Agricultural Statistics Service our steadfast mission is to provide timely, accurate, and
useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture. Therefore, we are pleased to provide you with the latest edition of the
New York Agricultural Statistics Annual Bulletin.
This report documents the current status of New York agriculture and includes history to show changes and trends
occurring. Information included provides concrete facts and figures for anyone interested in following the progress
of farming and related industries in New York. These facts and figures are used to make well-informed decisions,
which helps to eliminate guesswork, reduce risk, and improve profitability for farmers and ranchers. The numbers in
this publication will also be used by other USDA agencies, to help make solid market assessments, validate
economic opportunities, and be better stewards of federal funds as they help hard-working farm families access
billions of dollars in new credit, either directly or guaranteed through commercial lenders.
Publication and dissemination of these and other agricultural statistics is only possible with the support of the entire
agricultural industry. My sincere appreciation is extended to all the farm families and businesses who, so willingly,
gave their time and records so the estimates in this report could be prepared. Without participation from local
producers like you, NASS surveys cannot accurately reflect the health and well-being of the agriculture in New
York.
In conclusion, I also want to thank each and every producer who took the time to respond to the Census of
Agriculture. Census data summaries are available at the congressional district, watershed, zip code, and American
Indian reservation levels.
Additional products to be released in 2019 and 2020 include a Census of Agriculture specialty crop publication,
state-specific Census blogs, additional Census Highlights publications, the 2019 Irrigation and Water Management
Survey, the 2019 Census of Aquaculture, and the Census of Agriculture Race, Ethnicity, and Gender Profiles. Two
Census of Agriculture Special Studies will be released next year, the 2019 Census of Horticulture and the 2019
Organic Survey.
All Census and survey data products and more are available on NASS’s website at www.nass.usda.gov.
If you have any questions, concerns, or would like additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us by
e-mail or telephone; your comments regarding our programs and publications are always welcomed.
I wish all the readers of this Annual Bulletin good fortune this year and for years to come.
Sincerely,
King J. Whetstone II
Northeastern Regional Director
