Exporting, Canning, Picking, Maple & Vining Peas & Seed Treatments

Church of Bures is actively involved in the production of 17 different varieties and supply over 40 different varieties of peas each year.

Traditionally Maro has been the forerunner in terms of total tonnage. As maintainers of the variety the company grows the Breeders seed in single acre plots which are inspected and rogued four times during the crop’s development. This enables us to produce and supply the cleanest stocks of Maro available in the world.

Church of Bures is the UK agent for Pure Line Seeds Inc. Pure Line are plant breeders who have been producing world-class quality vining peas for over 60 years. As well as importing the seed from the USA, we also produce seed in the UK. Growing contracts for vining pea seed are available and have proven to be a very lucrative break crop.

Church of Bures, are the owners and maintainers of Minerva maple peas. We have been growing this variety for many years and together with our involvement with the marketing of Swift maple peas our market share is now considerable in the pigeon pea seed industry.

MAPLE PEAS

Maro - By far the longest surviving variety in this sector as other varieties ‘come and go’. The Japanese market for pea snacks is pretty consistent year by year, and with a tried and trusted variety such as Maro we have customers who always come back for more knowing they will receive a product that works for them every year.

The processors and the grocery trade favour Maro also, as it has little or no soaking problems. Typically, it will receive higher premiums on farm than any other marrowfat, and, as the variety maintainers, Church of Bures will ensure you get the purest and highest quality seed available in the country. Maro is also an excellent variety for the sprouting trade abroad, as it is a full leaved variety.

MAPLE PEASMinerva - This is a Church of Bures variety. It is a purple flowered brown skinned pea which produces high yields, is early to mature with seed of good shape and colour. It is still the preferred variety for feeding to pigeons which makes it a valuable commodity. It is also ideal in various green forage and silage mixtures and the brown seeded peas can be sold into the feed market for grinding and inclusion into animal feed. Its popularity has increased steadily over recent years due to its value to organic farmers as green manure or as a deep-rooting full foliage legume.

Swift - This semi-leafless maple pea yields higher and is easier to harvest than existing varieties. Swift is an established variety for the pigeon trade.

CLOVERSRED CLOVERRed Clover normally produces two main cuts and a small autumn cut. Most early varieties are traditionally known as Broad Red or Double Cut Clover. It is a useful component in the short-term grass mixtures for silage, haylage, etc.

Essex Broad - Church of Bures, are the maintainers of Essex Broad and still grow the variety in Essex. It is a 100% UK native variety in which we have specialised for a number of years. Produces heavy yielding hay and seed crops. It also provides a rich quality growth and leaves excellent soil fertility.

WHITE CLOVERWhite clover is a low growing high tillering plant which is a very important constituent of our long term leys. In our mixtures we blend two varieties this enables maximum benefit in terms of flexibility to most multi purpose leys.

Church White Clover Blend - This is a blend of medium and large leaved white clovers which will help bulk the grass for cutting and grazing with excellent mid summer production without artificial fertilizer.

50% Large Leaf Clover 50% Medium Leaf Clover

CRIMSON CLOVERCrimson Clover is a good choice for smothering weeds, fixing nitrogen and is a fast growing bulky green manure. It has deep roots that penetrate the soil, a mass of foliage and when ploughed in helps to improve the soil structure. It will also produce lovely crimson flowers that are very attractive to bees and other beneficial insects.

YELLOW SWEET CLOVERFast to establish biennial legume. Can sow from May onwards, strong rooting plant which improves soil structure.

SMALL SEEDSCLOVERS &

SMALL SEEDS

FORAGE RAPEThis is a most useful crop and can be sown at any time from March to September providing food from Autumn to Spring.

Broad Leaf Essex - More Winter hardy than English Giant and slightly shorter.

English Giant - Broad-leaved variety and selected for its hardiness. Immense growth and a large broad leaf.

BORAGEThis is a cobalt blue flowered herb, said to have been introduced into Britain by the Romans, but is now considered to be indigenous. It is a fast growing annual completing its full growing cycle in about four months. The plants are very robust and hardy and with its rapid growth rate, it tends to smother out most weeds. Borage flowers attract both wild and honey bees in very large numbers. Sown in the Spring at 8 kilos per acre and swathed in July when seed-drop is imminent, this oil crop will thrive on most soil types.

MUSTARDTilney - This variety produces high green weight matter up to flowering. Church of Bures are the sole maintainers in the UK for Tilney Mustard. It has excellent standing ability and produces large volumes of green matter and residual fibre. There is a leaflet available from us, which offers all the necessary information.

VETCH/TARESVetches are very important in UK agriculture. They form an essential part of any green manure mixture as their leafy plant is ideal for ploughing in to improve soil humus and structure. Arable silage mixtures also benefit from the inclusion of vetches.

English Early - Its nitrogen-fixing properties and ability to smother weeds due to its dense foliage make this an ideal part of the organic conversion process. As a leafy and leguminous plant it is an excellent cost effective crop especially on organic farms.

SWEETCORNWe can offer Super Sweet varieties which have a higher sugar content and slower starch conversion to give a sweeter flavour. Please contact us for availability. Telephone: 01787 227654 • churchofbures.co.uk

Field Beans are one of the world’s most important legume crops and world production exceeds four million tonnes per annum.

There is a substantial usage of small, uniform round-seeded tic beans in thediet of racing pigeons in the UK, Belgium and Germany. Maris Bead is a ticbean that is used in this market. Maris Bead is a Church of Bures varietyhaving been purchased from PBI. The input costs for growing tic beans arenot necessarily greater than for animal feed. The crop must be harvestedand dried very carefully. Tic beans should not be harvested less than 15.5-16.0% moisture where possible or dried at high temperatures because theseconditions cause seed to crack and split.

SPRING BEANSMaris Bead - This is a Church of Bures variety. The round seed is small and is predominantly used for the pigeon trade. Medium/early ripening and goodstanding power. For an established variety it has good Downy Mildew resistance.

BROAD BEANSAquadulce - The most popular variety for autumn sowing and as such produces consistent high yields and beans of superb eating quality. A favourite with gardeners and commercial producers.

Bunyards Exhibition - This high yielding white seeded variety has long pods which make it ideal for picking.

Express - Early white-eyed variety with black and white flowers. Very popular with commercial growers.

Giant Exhibition - White seeded variety with long pods of excellent quality. Good variety for the fresh market.

Imperial Green Longpod - Excellent quality green seeded variety. Long pods containing 6-7 seeds per pod.

Imperial Green Windsor - Pods shorter than the longpod varieties but with 5-6 excellent quality beans per pod.

ROOT CROPS & BEAN

SMasterpiece Green Longpod - This variety has green seeds and produces pods similar in length to Bunyards Exhibition.

The Sutton - Early heavy cropping dwarf variety. Rather short pods about 4-5 beans per pod. Height 1’/30 cm.

Witkiem - Early variety producing a high yield of broad well-filled pods and a tasty crop.

RUNNER BEANSEnorma - One of the best varieties for pulling. Has long pods of very fine texture.

Prizewinner - This variety produces an abundance of long pods of fine texture. Remarkable and excellent table quality.

Scarlet Emperor - Although this variety has been on the market for many years it is still very popular particularly with the amateur gardener but also with Commercial Growers. Long pods and an excellent cropper.

Streamline - A reliable favourite. Long podded, good for table use and for exhibition. Very popular with the vegetable gardener and commercial producer.

CLIMBING BEANSBlue Lake - Round pods similar to dwarf french bean. These are for fresh market, but also suitable for freezing. White seeded.

The full impact of voting to leave the EU on farm payment schemes going forward is still yet to be fully understood. In the short term however, any existing schemes will still need to be managed.

Existing agreements will still be managed until their agreed end date and many of the options and mixtures that have been used in these previous schemes will form part of the new scheme. In addition to this, many of these mixtures can be used to meet certain Ecological Focus Area (EFA) requirements following the latest BPS changes.

We can supply a range of excellent standard mixtures as detailed or can produce a completely bespoke mixture to suit your specific requirements please contact us for more information.

WILD BIRD SUPPLEMENTARY FEEDINGWild bird seed crops produce a large amount of food for farmland birds throughout the winter. As the weather deteriorates however, their ability to provide a reliable supply of seed becomes less. This is when it is important to ‘top up’ that shortfall with a supply of key seeds to give the birds a reliable food source through until the Spring.Supplementary feeding provides additional feed from December through to the Spring alongside existing wild bird seed cover. This ensures that when the cover crop is depleted of seed, the birds can then switch to the supplementary feed.

We can supply an excellent range of either ‘premixed’ seeds to meet growers prescribed requirements, or we can supply them as ‘straights’ for those who wish to mix their own.

Bag size is typically 25kgs or we can pack into Big Bags.

CONSERVATION, GREENING & EFA’sWILD BIRD MIXTURES - AB9These provide important food resources for farmland birds, especially in autumn and winter. They can be established between March 1st and June 15th and are typically a mix of cereals, brassicas and other small edible seeds.

G & EFA’S

GREEN MANURE MIXTURESThese are becoming more popular all the time as they have 2 very important roles. They add organic matter to the soil and make nitrogen available to the following crop. Typical ingredients used are Red Clover, White Clover, Phacelia, Mustard, Vetch, Rye, Italian Ryegrass and Minerva Maple Peas.

GREENING & EFA’SECOLOGICAL FOCUS AREAS

For farms over 15 hectares of arable land that are not exempt, must ensure an area equivalent to 5% to be EFA.

An EFA is an area of land on which you can carry out agricultural practices that are beneficial for the climate and the environment. There are seven EFA options that can be used on their own or in combination to meet the EFA requirements. Fallow land, margins, catch crops, green cover, nitrogen-fixing crops, hedges & agro forestry.

We produce a lot of these crops ourselves, so, here at W A Church we are well placed to make up a mixture for you.

Following CAP reforms the Single Payment Scheme for farmers was replaced from1st January 2015 for a Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) This scheme contains mandatory greening requirements, which will account for around 30% of the total payment.

Full detailed information on all aspects of the schemes can be found atwww.gov.uk/cap-reform.

Please contact us to discuss all your requirements.

CONSERVATION, GREENING & EFA’s continuedPart of the greening rules under the current BPS is the management of ecological focus areas (EFA’s)

EFA’s can be made up of:

● Hedges● Buffer strips● Nitrogen fixing crops● Fallow land● Catch and cover crops

There have recently been some changes to these rules and we fully expect more changes in the future as the government outlines its plans for agricultural policy post leaving the EU.

The latest rule changes can be found at www.gov.uk/guidance/bps-2018

We can supply standard or bespoke seed mixtures to help you fulfil your EFA criteria, please call us with your requirements.

GAME COVERKale - Traditionally this has always been the most popular game cover crop. It standswell throughout the season and its broad leafy plant with thick stems provides theperfect game cover. Underneath the plants is a bare floor, which is ideal for pheasantsespecially when hand fed. Thousand Head is popular due to the large number of broadleaves and Marrow Stem’s thick stalk creates an effective umbrella type canopy.

LATE SPRING/EARLY SUMMER SOWINGArtichokes - Produce good early cover and provide birds with excellent foodthroughout the winter. Drill with a potato planter in ridged rows. This product is perishable and must be drilled as soon as possible upon receipt of the tubers.

● Drill March/April @ 500 kgs/acre in 75-90cm rows.● Height: 5’-6’ / 150-180cm NB Minimum order 250 kilos

Buckwheat - This game crop matures quickly to supply continuous food and coverthroughout the Autumn. A good ingredient for mixtures.

● Drill May/June @ 50 kgs/acre in 12-18cm rows.● Height 2’-3’ / 60-90cm

Canary Grass - Hardy perennial which can last up to ten years. Once establishedit provides excellent warm cover breaks holding in birds. Recommended by GameConservancy for its excellent holding ability in the warm dense foliage that itproduces.

● Drill March/May @ 2 kgs/acre in 60-75cm rows.● Height 3’-4’ / 90-120cm

Canary Seed - Dense annual crop providing low cover and valuable food during winter months. Canary seed is often used as an ingredient in mixtures as it creates a bushy plant similar to grass with lots of seed heads.

● Drill March/April @ 15 kgs/acre in 20cm rows.● Height 2’-3’ / 60-90cm

Dwarf Sorghum - This is a dense leafy cover crop offering good feeding value. It is a single cross hybrid, which is early to mature, and has a high grain potential. The variety we offer has large leaves and very good standing power. It stands about 2/3rds the height of Giant Sorghum and remains standing to provide warm cover as well as height to lift the birds.

CONSTABLE MIXTUREThis all purpose wild flower mixture is unique to Church of Bures. It provides a stable way of establishing a beautiful meadow using attractive native species and has been formulated to provide a wide range of strong UK native flowers. The Constable and Gainsborough Mixtures give excellent variety and colour throughout the flowering season, from April through to October. The mixtures will not only delight the eye with their rich diversity but will also prove very attractive to butterflies and other insects.

Since enhanced soil fertility will have an adverse effect on the persistence of Wild Flora by encouraging more aggressive grasses, clovers with their atmospheric nitrogen fixing properties have been omitted entirely from the mixtures. 20%

CONSTABLE MIXTUREMixed in with the wild flora is a carefully selected blend of attractive and ornamental meadow grasses, which are worthy of appreciation in their own right. These will maintain healthy but non-competitive growth in low fertility soil conditions, keeping the ground tidy throughout the year. The ornamental grasses make up 80% of the mixtures with 20% wild flowers. When buying a wild flower meadow mixture we provide you with a complete guide to soil preparation, sowing, initial maintenance and continual maintenance.

WILD FLOW

ERSGAINSBOROUGH MIXTUREThe Gainsborough wild flower mix has been formed to include less species than the Constable Mix, however there are far more seeds of each wild flower species included. This improves the chance of establishment especially in areas where the soil is quite fertile and the grasses are allowed to grow quickly and dominate. This is a beautiful mixture which is completed by the attractive non-aggressive meadow grasses.

CHURCH CORNFIELD MIXTUREIt is possible to create a striking meadow of annual cornfield flowers. When this mixture is established the results are stunning. It is most commonly sold as a pure mixture of wild flower seeds, however it is possible to dilute the flora with a meadow grass mixture.

GRASSESLAWN GRASSAlmost all the different amenity grasses we use in our mixtures are in the top ten varieties listed by The Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI). Each cultivar is selected by us to ensure their all round performance regarding tolerance of close mowing, shoot density, fineness of leaf, cleanliness of cut, winter greenness and the ability to grow strongly after mowing.

Amenity Perennial Ryegrass - This is our best selling amenity grass. Its main attractionbeing its low cutting frequency with good persistence and stability which makes itideal for many different grass situations at a low price.

Brown Top - This is the finest and highest quality grass which makes it an essentialcomponent for a first class lawn.

Chewings Fescue - A very fine fescue which is distinguished by its strong root andsward development. It has excellent tolerance to frequent close mowing and has a lowrate of leaf increase which makes it an ideal mixing component with other fine leavedvarieties.

Crested Dogstail - This is a very attractive yet more traditional grass. It can be used inornamental lawn mixtures but is more suited to an old time meadow mix.

Hard Fescue - Its growth habit makes it suitable for both amenity and meadowsituations.

Creeping Red Fescue - This fescue is perfect for amenity mixtures as it fills out thebottom of the sward and helps to keep a good colour in summer thus making it anessential ingredient for excellent lawns.

Rough Stalked Meadow Grass - Requires moist conditions and thrives on strong soils.Suitable for tough-wearing situations.

Smooth Stalked Meadow Grass - As a drought resister this is very valuable under dryconditions. It is suitable for shady areas and has thick shoot density for good groundcover even when mown very short.

These top quality amenity grasses can be blended to form mixtures tailor-made to suit your own special requirements for all situations i.e. golf greens, tees and fairways, horse gallops, car boot fields, playing fields, air strips and runways, road side verges as well as different mixtures for low maintenance landscaping grass.

AGRICULTURAL GRASSCocksfootCocksfoot produces high yields in late summer and is suitable for use as autumn keep in November and December. It is sometimes used as a special purpose grass on the drier, free-draining soils of East Anglia. It is often used in strips of cereals to provide habitat for aphid eating beetles. Early varieties are available with high yields at first conversion cut.

MEADOW FESCUEAn excellent hay type, which is also good for early grazing.

ITALIAN RYEGRASSThese grasses grow quickly and early for a short duration. They provide the bulk of hay and under suitable management, continuous grazing.

WESTERWOLDSFast growing, useful for quick cropping, patching of leys and building up humus in orchards.

TIMOTHYHigh yields with a very good first conversion cut at 67D. Excellent ground cover and mid-season digestibility.

PERENNIAL RYEGRASSThese vigorous grasses are durable, long lasting and tiller well. They form the basis of most pastures and their root capacity makes a big contribution to soil humus and thus soil fertility.

HERBS FOR HORSESAn excellent additive to the No 12 mixture and popular with horse lovers. A simple herb blend in the ley enables horses to receive an increased mineral intake in the diet. Most wild herbs are drought resistant and can improve drainage with their deep roots penetrating the subsoil. The flavour of the herbs improves the palatability and thus the horses relish the fresh herb ley.

HAYLAGE MIXTUREHaylage is simply forage that is baled at a higher moisture content than dry hay and then stored in a sealed plastic wrap. Because of the high moisture level and air tight environment, the forage ferments and is preserved by acid production during fermentation. A big advantage of this is obviously the decreased curing time needed from cutting to baling which makes weather less of a factor.
