This Best Practices Mission belongs to you and its success relies on your participation and learning from your experience.

The purpose of your visit is to allow you to leverage Lean and Green thinking principles and learn about productivity improvement best practices shared by the host companies you will be visiting.

We hope that you find the next few pages useful in capturing your thoughts and reflections during your visit and that this journal will be a useful tool in helping you implement improvements within your own facilities.

Using your Journal

Use these pages to capture your observations, thoughts, concepts and ideas as they happen and what you’d like to try in your own workplace. This information will help you retain what you have learned and work as a reference later.

You can also record your notes online using the survey section in Provision’s Online Sustainability Portal. See the following page for portal instructions.

In each Best Practices tour you will be asked to provide feedback and comments for the host companies on the following:

• What you thought was done well at the host company

• What you identified as possible opportunities for improvement at the host company

Things to keep in mind when taking notes:

To access the mission surveys/evaluations and and tools and resources, you must register your organization first.

1. Go to http://provisioncoalition.com/Home.

2. Click “Register” in the top right corner.

3. Enter all the required information in the form that appears.

• Be sure to note your password, as you will need it every time you login to the portal (along with your email address).

4. When you select “Food and beverage manufacturing” as your industry, you will be asked for your facility’s NAICS Code and Business Registration Number. If you don’t have these, it can be temporarily skipped.• You are able to track data for multiple

facilities under one account in your “My Profile” section. During sign up, simply enter the data for one of your facilities to get started.

5. Once you have entered your data and read and agreed to Provision Coalition’s Terms and Conditions, click the green “Create Account” button at the bottom of the screen.

Your account has been created. You may now login with your Email and password to start exploring!

Provision will be giving a special live demonstration of the portal’s tools and resources during the Networking Dinner on September 25th.

Company Overview

It is no secret that Toyota is a master at lean manufacturing, and the Toyota Cambridge plant is an excellent demonstration of the highly efficient lean practices of the world-renowned company. Toyota was the pioneer in continuous improvement and remains a world-class leader in this area. Toyota’s continuous improvement process is largely supported by their employees, particularly front-line, who are empowered and encouraged to provide feedback and suggestions for improvement.

Lean Initiatives and Sustainable Business Practices

• The facility has implemented zero waste to landfill.• The facility showcases the Toyota Production System (TPS) – the manufacturing

philosophy and the core of Toyota’s competency. It is based on four principles: customer first, people are the most valuable resources, kaizen (continuous improvement), shop floor focus.

• Just In Time (JIT) – philosophy of complete elimination of waste; making only what is needed, when it is needed, in the amount needed.

• Jidoka – automation with a human touch. Automated equipment that stops when a problem arises, preventing production of defective products.

• Kanban system – this system was invented by Toyota to assist in their JIT and lean production. The Kanban system aligns inventory levels with actual consumption by using the rate of demand to control the rate of production.

• Heijunka – a production leveling technique used to schedule production activities and control inventory.

The McNeil Consumer Healthcare plant is a world class leader in lean manufacturing. A member of the Johnson & Johnson Family of companies, the plant manufactures TYLENOL*, MOTRIN*, BENYLIN*, and SUDAFED*. The company encapsulates its sustainability commitment in its Credo which is described as “a commitment to our consumers, our employees, our environment, the community, and our stockholders.”

Lean Initiatives and Sustainable Business Practices

• The facility has Six Sigma Black and Green belt certified employees on site.• The facility showcases Make 2 Win (M2W) program in action! The M2W program

utilizes many features of lean such as daily operations meetings (DOMs), Gemba walks, visual boards (touch screen TVs).

• The facility has implemented a Zero Defects program so delegates will see boards posted throughout the facility where operators can report issues they see. This program encourages employees to report possible mistakes of defects and operates under the motto “If you see something, say something.”

• The facility showcases a stand-alone electronic batch records system utilized in the Liquids and Packaging areas. In addition, there is a current project ongoing to roll out an integrated Manufacturing Execution System (MES) program throughout the entire manufacturing area.

• The facility uses Kanbans in the warehouse for packaging components including bottles.

• The facility is ISO 14001 Certified.

• The facility has been practicing lean initiatives for the last 20 years, and has an impressive strategy deployment program with intertwined lean and green elements that have cascaded into the plant.

• The facility showcases many features of lean such as 5S, daily management program, Gemba walks, and visual boards.

• The facility has an extensive Kanban (inventory control) system in place that is often extended at supplier level too.

• The facility practices problem solving tools and default to 8D.

• The facility has Six Sigma certified employees on site.

• The facility has implemented various waste reduction programs with a goal to be a zero waste facility. It also has a number of projects well underway to reduce its carbon footprint, and has developed an internal Sustainability Report to communicate their achievements with all employees.

• The facility is ISO 9001 (since 1994), ISO 14001 (since 2002), and ISO TS 16949 (since 2003) certified.

The Coca Cola Weston plant is one of the early adopters of lean and six-sigma initiatives. While the plant is older, it has undertaken several lean and sustainable initiatives that will demonstrate to tour participants that you do not need to be a new facility to be lean and sustainable. Did you know that Coca Cola has pledged to become water neutral by 2020?

Lean Initiatives and Sustainable Business Practices• Coca Cola Enterprises has an impressive overall Lean Management System in

place, with a focus on taking an integrated approach to lean and green manufacturing.

• The senior management team is very keen and supportive of lean (excellent culture). The team has put a number of excellent training programs in place.

• The facility showcases the Operational Excellence (OE) program, and has implemented the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) tool (ready for internal certification).

• The facility runs an “Everyone can Win Program” and has adapted lean features such as Gemba walks and visual boards. Their program encourages employees to make online continuous improvement suggestions.

• The facility has implemented a waste diversion program, along with a number of energy and water conservation initiatives. The delegates will see boards posted in the facility on key business and environmental performance indicators.

Steam Whistle is an independent craft brewery located in the heart of downtown Toronto. The company produces a premium pilsner packaged in distinctive green glass bottles and a non-twist cap. They only use four natural ingredients: spring water from Caledon, Ontario; hops from Czech Republic and Germany; two-row barley from Saskatchewan; and yeast.

Sybil TaylorCommunications Director, Steam Whistle Brewing Sybil Taylor is a beer marketing veteran,

having begun her career in the industry in 1987. After completing her Honours Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier, Sybil had worked at the

Upper Canada Brewing Company, holding various roles over 9 years.

As the Vice President of Development and Distribution at Upper Canada, she was responsible for activities in Ontario’s LCBO and Beer Store, as well as export development in the United States and through other provincial Liquor Boards. Sybil also managed private label brand launches and partner relationships.

After leaving Upper Canada, she worked in the travel industry for 3 years, and then joined Steam Whistle Brewing as its first employee. In the role of Director of Marketing, she launched this iconic brand and helped to shape its unique market position.

She then shifted gears at Steam Whistle and began focusing on Communications.  Her communications work saw the development of a leading social media strategy, and record media attention for her brand. Sybil helped to form the company’s unique corporate culture through internal communications, HR practices & their renowned customer orientation. She became the steward of Steam Whistle’s environmental initiatives, for which the company has received much public recognition and numerous awards.

Sybil is proud that many of the founding principles and programs she established are still what drives the marketing for one of Canada’s brewing success stories.

Cher Mereweather Executive Director, Provision Coalition Cher Mereweather joined Provision Coalition when it was still the Ontario Food Industry Environmental

Coalition (OFIEC). As the Managing Director, she led the charge for rebranding and incorporating OFIEC as Provision Coalition, which was done in March 2013. As Provision Coalition's Executive Director, Cher manages day-to-day operations and, in conjunction with the Board, develops the Coalition's goals and strategy. She is also a voice for the industry, speaking on the many business benefits of an integrated strategy for sustainability. Prior to Provision, Cher was a senior leader at the Guelph Food Technology Centre (GFTC) from 2008 to 2012 where she created, developed and directed the Sustainability Consulting Business Unit. Her career also includes nine years with the George Morris Centre as a Senior Research Associate and Program Manager for environmental economics and policy research.

Cher holds a bachelor and master’s degree from the University of Guelph in Environmental Science and Environmental Economics and Business. Cher is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP®) and has completed advanced executive leadership and a change management certification. In 2012, Cher was

Brett Wills President, Green Enterprise Movement Inc.

Brett Wills brings over 14 years of experience in the Sustainability

arena and as a former Plant Manager, has first-hand experience developing and executing strategies to drive organizational performance.

As President of the Green Enterprise Movement and Director of Sustainability for High Performance Solutions Inc., Brett now spends the majority of his time helping organizations across North America accelerate their journey towards Sustainability. Brett has worked with hundreds of organizations across a broad sector of industries including manufacturing, government, health care, retail and the hospitality sector. Over the past 5 years,

Brett has spent a considerable amount of time working with food processors across North America to enhance their sustainability performance. Recently, Brett partnered with NSF-GFTC and Provision to deliver a pilot program to 4 Ontario based food processors. The focus of this program was to develop and execute a Sustainability Strategy for each organization by leveraging a new online portal developed by Provision Coalition.

The focus of Brett’s work is on enhancing organizational performance by driving Sustainability through the organization. Areas of focus include: Culture Development, Strategic Planning and Execution, Application of Lean and Continuous Improvement Tools to Drive Sustainable Performance, Energy & Water Conservation, Material Optimization, Waste Diversion, Carbon and Water Management, Sustainability Reporting & Disclosure, Sustainable Procurement, Sustainability Performance Measurement and more. As lead facilitator of 4 Sustainability Consortiums, Brett has the opportunity to regularly work with leading, sustainability minded organizations, keeping him current with the latest innovations in Sustainability and thus ensuring clients are utilizing the latest thinking, information, techniques and tools needed to compete and win in the new economy.

As Professor of Green Business Management at Seneca College in Toronto, ON, Brett is helping to prepare the next wave of Sustainability Change Agents to enter the workforce.

Brett lives in Toronto and is the author of “Green Intentions: Creating a Green Value Stream to Compete and Win” a book that presents a systematic process for organizations to go green profitably, a process that is based on lean thinking. Brett holds a BA in Economics from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Ron MacDonaldP. EngAssociate Engineer, AMEC

Ron MacDonald is an Associate Engineer with the Energy and

Agriculture Services Group for AMEC. He has over 30 years of experience as a lead engineer, project manager, construction coordinator, and energy auditor on various agricultural, municipal, industrial and commercial projects. Ron’s experience include working with multidisciplinary teams of consulting engineers, scientists, technicians and inspectors on small and large scale projects, and proven successful communication with subcontractors, sub consultants, clients, and local authorities.

As president of Agviro, Inc., a consulting engineering company based in Guelph, Ontario, Ron managed activities of a variety

of teams both internal and external on a wide array of projects involving conceptual and final design, construction, and commissioning, calibrating and training staff. Working as a Research Engineer in energy efficient technologies and alternative fuels/energy sources at the University of Guelph, he acquired deep understanding in ventilation systems modeling, building energy efficiency simulation analyses in applying fluid mechanics and aerodynamic theories to the processes. He also provided a variety of consulting engineering services as a sole proprietor and private practice consulting engineer.

Ron’s early career included a variety of assignments and jobs, volunteering and serving on technical committees. Ron has been recognized numerous times for his contributions to committees, as chair of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Information and Electrical Technologies IET 433, sub-committee chair for energy efficient ventilation systems, fan testing, lighting systems, and stand-by generation, as well as serving on a large number of other related sub-committees. He has also received awards in the world of energy efficiency, such as receiving two Small Industrial Energy Efficiency Awards from Natural Resources Canada for energy savings achievements at two Alberta farms, involving complete energy audits for HVAC and redesign of relevant systems.

Ron has recently coauthored a Ventilation Design Manual and currently he is an engineering designer and reviewer for the new University of Guelph $17M Dairy

Meena HassanaliIndustry Program Manager, Provision Coalition

Meena Hassanali is a performance and results driven professional with

over 12 years of diversified experience in working with private and public sector stakeholders to drive transformative change and apply sustainable solutions that add business value. As Provision Coalition's Industry Program Manager, Meena is responsible for managing and delivering industry programs and initiatives, including the Processing Food Sustainably Program.

Prior to joining Provision, Meena worked at the Bloom Centre for Sustainability (BLOOM) where she spent nine years as the Director of Sustainability and Sustainability Programs Manager. Meena has successfully managed industry sustainability programs including the award winning BLOOM’s On-site Technical Assistance Program, working with over seventy small and medium-sized (SME) manufacturers to achieve triple bottom line results. Under this program, Meena worked with industry experts to facilitate over eighty pollution prevention assessments to identify cleaner and greener pollution prevention (P2) practices for manufacturers. She has planned, delivered, and presented at more than twenty national sustainability conferences and pollution prevention workshops to engage industry stakeholders

in adopting sustainable business practices. While at BLOOM, Meena had the lead responsibility for the design and delivery of BLOOM’s annual sustainability conference and trade show, Sustainability Applied, drawing over 300 delegates and 50 speakers annually. In 2006, Meena collaborated with the Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention (C2P2) to participate in the delivery of a three-day best practice mission in Sao Paolo, Brazil on Engaging SMEs in Cleaner Production Practices.

Passionate about Provision’s mission, Meena continues to take a leadership role in the development of strategic partnerships among private, public and non-government organizations.

Meena holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto in Environmental Science and a master’s degree in Environmental Studies from York University.
