Change Story

Over the last decade, AGRA has laid the

foundation for a renaissance in Africa’s

agriculture, one powered by the enormous

progress increasingly evident in farmers

who gain more options in the seeds they

plant, in the fertilizers they use, and the

markets available to purchase their

produce.

If agriculture is to become the engine of

economic growth that the continent needs

and deserves, all the necessary

interventions must act in concert both

within AGRA but also externally and in

collaboration with all our partners.

Our operating environment

has changed since we were

founded. Multinational

companies are fast entering

African markets, more

vibrant local companies are

emerging, governments are

investing more in agriculture,

and many donors have

shifted from targeting an

isolated part of the value

chain, to considering the

eco-systems as a whole.

Together with our partners, AGRA will continue to put the smallholder

farmer at the center of the continent’s growing economy by transforming

agriculture from a solitary struggle to survive into farming as a business

that thrives.

catalyzing the agricultural

transformation of Africa. That is our

lifeblood; it is the reason we exist. We

want to scale up now to impact 9

million farmers directly and 21 million

farmers indirectly.

We aim to be the partner of choice, the

go-to-partner for agricultural

transformation for sustainable

development in Africa. We must be

sought after for our technical and

innovative approaches to

transformation by governments, private

sector and influencers on the continent

and beyond.

to live out the “alliance”

component of the

Alliance for the Green

Revolution of Africa. We

need to build strong and

reliable partnerships with

a diverse constituency of

donors, governments,

regional & continental

institutions and grantees.

AGRA is now pitted to be a leading

and influential Convener, Facilitator

and Catalyst for agricultural

transformation in Africa. We now

have a new strategy developed to

drive this positioning to 2020 and as

an institution we must change and

grow in response to this ambition.

We must transition into a truly

partnership and country-focused

institution in order to accelerate our

impact and lift 30 million smallholder

farmers to thriving businesses,

sustainably and in scale.

AGRA must now drive agricultural

transformation across Africa

AGRA’s grant making is actually very small in the greater scheme of things,

but we must use it to leverage, magnify and catalyze all investments and

financial flows into Africa’s agriculture sector.

transformation
