The city always had a great administrative and historical significance and also, played vital role in shaping up the history of the nation. The city’s heyday was as Mughal Empire’s capital from 1526 to 1658, the city was founded much before. The earliest reference to this city can be found in the epic age of Mahabharata, and the city’s history records somewhere around the 11th century. The city was important to all of its rulers including both Hindu and Muslim. Sultan Sikandar Lodi, Babur, Humanyun, Hemachandra VIckramaditya, and Shah Jehan are some of the great rulers of the land. Since, the city has changed hands with several Hindu and Muslim rulers in past, so the city’s culture is now a mix of both.

• Taj Mahal – it is by far the most visited attraction of the city. It is so because its beauty is simply incomparable. Build by Shah Jehan in the memories of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, Taj Mahal is world’s biggest symbol of eternal love. It is an immense mausoleum made up of white marble that is one of the most well protected tombs in the world. The great India poet Rabindranath Tagore, described it as “a teardrop on the cheek of eternity”. It is an impeccably beautifully created structure on earth and its beauty instantly lefts visitors spellbound. The structure looks most beautiful during full moon night, when the moon light gets reflected by the pools and the surrounding get filled up by the sweet smell of the flowers ornamented in the gardens.

• Agra Fort – it is by far the other top tourist spot in the city. It is similar in layout to Delhi’s Red Fort and is also built from red sandstone, but is better reserved. Emperor Akbar built the fort as a symbol of his power, and it is this same fort where Emperor Shah Jehan was confined. This fort is just at the walking distance from Taj Mahal and visitors who visit Taj Mahal also visit Agra Fort.

• Sikandra ­ located 10km form Agra, in the Delhi Agra highway, is the tomb of the great Emperor Akbar, right at the centre of the garden. Akbar, himself started the construction of this tomb and his son, Jehangir, completed it. It is a beautifully created tomb, with lots of wall paintings and sculpting. This place, is simply one of the topmost places to visit in Agra.
