Occupational Standard:“Geology and exploration survey”

Glossary:

The following terms and definitions are applied in this Occupational Standard:Algorithm - a set of instructions describing the order of the executor’s actions to achieve a

certain result. In the old interpretation, the word “sequence” was used instead of the word “order”.Drilling is the process of mining construction (borehole, well, less often a pit, shaft) mainly of

circular cross-section in the earth's crust to study the geological structure, prospecting, exploration, mining, engineering, geological surveys, etc. There are many types of drilling: core drilling, non-core drilling, cable drilling, roller drilling, auger drilling, vibration drilling, jet-drilling, etc.

Drilling Rig - a set of equipment designed primarily for the well construction. There are stationary, mobile, self-propelled and portable drilling rigs.

Geodesy - the science of methods for determining the shape and dimensions of the Earth, the image of the earth's surface on plans and maps.

Geological cartography is a branch of cartographic science that develops methods for mapping various geological contents maps, maps of Quaternary deposits, geomorphologic, hydrogeological, geophysical, geochemical, lithologic-petrographic, lithologic-facial, paleogeographic, tectonic, mineral, metallogenic deposits, etc.

Geological fund - the geological fund of RCGI “Kazgeoinform” and the funds of the interregional territorial departments together form the system of geological fund of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The service of geological funds is a structural subdivision of the Republican Center for Geological Information “Kazgeoinform” (RCGI “Kazgeoinform”). The Service permanently collects, stores, provides geological information for use, maintains state registration of subsoil exploration, state records of geological, geophysical and state of the hydrogeological subsoil studies, registers site plans of the Committee of Geology and Subsoil Use. The main activity of the Service is the collection and storage of geological information.

Geology - science of the structure of the Earth, its origin and development, based on study of the earth's crust by all available methods involving data from astronomy, astrophysics, physics, chemistry, biology, and other sciences. Geology has been mixed with other branches of knowledge for a long period of time. The advanced geology is divided into a number of interrelated industries used in the description and study of the Earth: the dynamic geology, historical geology, geotectonics, petrology, lithology, mineralogy, crystallography, geology of mineral resources, hydrogeology, regional geology and others.

Each of these branches of geology can be divided into separate disciplines. The predominant part of specific issues currently being solved by geology refers to the surface parts of the planet, limited to a depth of 10-15 km. The term “geology” is also used to denote the geological structure of a country or a certain large area of the earth's surface.

Geological exploration - a complex of various special geological and other works, targeted to search, detection and preparation for industrial development of mineral deposits. Geological exploration includes studying the regularities of location, conditions of formation, and features of the structure, the material composition of mineral deposits for its forecasting, searching, establishment of the occurrence conditions, preliminary and detailed exploration, geological and economic assessment, and preparation for industrial development.

Geophysics is a science that studies physical phenomena and processes that occur in the shells of the Earth and in its core. Given specific features of the geospheres in terms of their structure, composition, physical properties and development, geophysics distinguishes atmospheric physics, the physics of the sea and the physics of the solid Earth. Geophysics of geological assignment (exploration geophysics) has the uppermost part of the solid Earth as its main object and associated with geological disciplines in study of the earth's crust, the search and exploration of minerals, solution of engineering geology and hydrogeology.

Geochemistry - science of the distribution (concentration and scattering) and migration processes of chemical elements in the earth's crust and as far as possible in the Earth as a whole. The goal of geochemistry is to reveal the main laws governing these phenomena using achievements of all natural science. Geochemistry makes extensive use of information obtained by other geological sciences, primarily geology, mineralogy, mineral science, etc. The modern geochemistry is a complex of disciplines, including geochemistry of isotopes, biogeochemistry, regional geochemistry, and geochemical methods of prospecting for mineral deposits.

GSOW - geophysical surveys and operations in wells (development geophysics, monitoring of technical condition of wells, studies of operating wells, etc.)

GIS (geographical information system) - system of collection, storage, analysis and graphical visualization of spatial (geographical) data and related information on the necessary facilities.

CGSU MID RK - Committee of Geology and Subsoil Use of the Ministry of Investments and Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

CORE - In geology it is a cylindrical column of rock, obtained as a result of column drilling. It serves for geological examination and sampling.

Conditions of mineral deposit - a set of requirements for quality and mining and geological conditions for development of a mineral deposit; provide contouring of the deposit and division of its reserves into balance and off-balance reserves.

Mineral deposit - accumulation of mineral substance in the depths or on the surface of the Earth, which is suitable for industrial use in quantity, quality and conditions of occurrence.

Nomenclature - a system for identifying sheets of maps of different scales.SW – software.Geological prospecting - a complex of geological, geophysical and geochemical works being

made for identification and prospective evaluation of mineral deposits.Mineral deposit - mineral formations of the earth's crust, the chemical composition and

physical properties of which allow them to be effectively used in the sphere of material production. They are divided into solid (coal, ore, non-metallic minerals), liquid (oil, mineral water) and gaseous (natural combustible and inert gases) ones.

Exploration of mineral deposit - a set of works for identification and geological and economic assessment of mineral resources. It consists of three main stages: preliminary, detailed and operational.

Interchart relationship - the system of dividing the Earth’s surface with meridians and parallels. Each sheet is bounded by a frame.

Section - 1) a transverse section, in geology - a graphic image of geological structure of the earth's crust on the plane. 2) open-cast, in mining - a set of open mine workings formed during development of coal or placer deposits.

CE – computer equipment.Stratigraphy (from Latin stratum - layer and “graphy”) is a geology section that studies the

sequence of formation of rocks and their primary spatial relationships. In the 2nd half of 19th century the main geological systems are identified and their sequence is outlined. The use of various methods in the stratigraphy (paleontological, spore-pollen analysis, isotopic determinations, lithological, geochemical, geophysical methods) made it possible to compile a general composite stratigraphic column.
