Academic Assessment
Primary and secondary assessors are replaced by ‘Assessor Pairs’ consisting of GCRB Board members and an invited pool of assessors
The Chair of the Board is not involved as an assessor pair, but is involved in an advisory capacity for applicants and mentors throughout the process.
Work of Assessor Pairs
Assessment Panel (all Assessor Pairs and GCRB Moderator) meet over 1 day
The academic work is marked by Assessor Pairs and then the remainder of the e-portfolio is reviewed.
February 1st – March 1st Intentions submitted to GCRB Administrator who
assess eligibility and allocates eligible candidates a random 8 digit number
Number is put on to every page of the portfolio; the candidate’s name is removed and the portfolio becomes anonomised
April 1st Submission of electronic copy of full portfolio to
GCRB Administrator Sign-off Mentor and Manager send to the GCRB
Administrator their confidential references
GCRB Assessment Process from February 2011
April 2nd – 30th GCRB Administrator randomly selects
‘Assessor Pairs’ (consisting of GCRB Board members plus additional assessor) for each candidate
GCRB Administrator emails the essay and case studies to each Assessor Pair
The work is totally anonymous and identifiable by the 8-digit number
May 1st – 31st Assessor Pairs have one month to read
essay and case studies and prepare their assessment
June GCRB Meeting Assessment Panel (all Assessor Pairs
and GCRB Moderator) meet The academic work is marked by
Assessor Pairs and then the remainder of the e-portfolio is reviewed and the candidate’s identity is revealed
Moderator available to discuss borderline cases
10% of portfolios are audited
Additional Notes on New System
Timeframe for submissions is different: Intention submitted February, portfolio submission April
Portfolio content remains the same as
previous years but is now totally electronic
Mentors to become ‘Sign-off Mentors’.
This role to be phased in with new training updates. Existing Mentors will be able to perform the ‘Sign-Off’ role until 2013, to allow additional training to be completed
Sign-off Mentors and Managers write a
confidential reference that the candidate no longer sees

Prior to Intention Submission Sign-off Mentor assesses the sections of the
portfolio relating to clinical competency and signs off the following:
o Case logs (views all 50 cases and sits in on 5 consultations)
o Core Competencies (checks Appendices to portfolio)
o CPD (assesses reflective work) Counselling supervisor signs off both
counselling scenarios If work is not signed off by submission of
portfolio applicant cannot proceed to assessment phase
PASS
DEFERRED Resubmit amendments with next registration cohort
FAIL New portfolio required
Meeting of the Assessor Panel to assess the academic parts of the portfolio
Sign-off Mentor assesses the competency parts of the portfolio: case logs (sits in on 5 consultations, views the notes for each of the 50 cases), Core Competencies and CPD
Sign-off Mentor and
Manager send in confidential reference on candidate
