    ADVANTAGES OF FIBERGLASS REINFORCED PLASTICS

Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), is a composite material consisting of fiberglass reinforcements in a plastic (polymer) matrix. The variations of both reinforcements and polymers allow an incredible range of physical and mechanical properties which can be developed specifically for the performance required, unlike traditional materials such as wood, metal, ceramics, etc.

Fiberglass reinforced plastic composites are strong, lightweight, corrosion resistant, thermally and electrically nonconductive, RF transparent, and virtually maintenance free. These unique properties of FRP, make them suitable and desirable for a wide range of product applications.

    FRP Advantages include:

Strength and Durability Versatility and Freedom of Design Affordability and Cost Effectiveness Unique Physical Properties

FRP is an attractive, lightweight, and durable material with one of the highest strength to weight ratios available for component fabrication. It is also highly resistant to environmental extremes. FRP does not rust, is highly resistant to corrosives, and is able to withstand temperature extremes as low as -80F (-26.6C) or as high as 200F (93.3C).

Fiberglass reinforced plastics can be tooled, molded, and fabricated into almost any shape or design. There are few restrictions on color, finish, shape or size. In addition to its versatility, FRP products are very affordable and cost effective solutions for almost any application, component or part. Once molds have been created, parts can be easily duplicated at extremely cost effective price points.

FRP products are chemically inert, thus will not react chemically with other substances. FRP products are also structurally stable and exhibit the least amount of expansion and contraction with temperature fluctuations when compared to traditional materials.

Pultrusion is the continuous processing of raw materials by pulling resin-rich reinforcements through a heated steel die to form profiles of constant cross section of continuous length.

Pultrusion gets its name from the method by which the profiles are made. Raw materials are literally pulled by what is called the puller. The puller is the machine made of pulling pads, which grip the product, and a drive system that keeps the product moving. The puller is located just before the cut-off saw.

The process starts with the reinforcements. Typically, unidirectional glass roving begins the process. This is the fiber that runs along the length of the profile. Then, the fiberglass mat is added, which is a multidirectional reinforcement. Next, the glass reinforcements are wet-out with a thermoset resin, typically polyester or vinyl ester. Finally, just before all the material is pulled into the heated die, a surfacing veil may be added to enhance the surface appearance of the final product.

Next in the pultrusion process is the curing of the composite. The curing or hardening occurs while the wet-out reinforcements are being pulled through the heated die. The heat from the die causes the resin to cure and by the time the part exits the die; a hard part in the exact shape of the die cavity has been formed. The final result is a solid, rigid profile with all reinforcements laminated within.

The puller then pulls the product exiting the die to the cut-off saw, which cuts it to the required length.

Vinyl Ester (VFR) - Developed to withstand frequent and direct contact in the harshest of chemical environments. VFR is Beige, ideal for use in acidic and caustic environments such as chemical plants, waste water treatment, and plating applications.

Isophthalic Polyester (IFR) - Industrial grade resin great for environments where grating may occasionally be in contact with harsh chemicals due to splashes or spills. IFR is Dark Grey, perfect for outdoor applications.

    CONSTITUENTS OF FRP PULTRUSIONS

FRP pultruded composites are composed of two main constituents- resins and reinforcements that can take on a number of variations.

Resin - The resin (polymer) system imparts the properties of corrosion resistance, fire retardance, and elasticity. Although, American Grating offers a number of resins tailored to specific environments, the majority of FRP components use two systems most often: polyester and vinyl esters. Polyesters offer excellent service in most environments. Vinyl esters are selected for more severe environments where optimal chemical resistance is required. All American Grating resins also include UV inhibitors. Consult our Corrosion Resistance Guide (Page 110) when selecting a resin for your particular application.

Reinforcements (Fiberglass) - Depending upon the manufacturing process and strength requirements, a number of fiberglass reinforcements will be utilized.

Rovings - Rovings are unidirectional continuous filaments of strands of fiberglass. They are utilized in all pultruded products and molded grating products. They are the rebar of FRP, providing longitudinal tensile and flexural strength contributing to stiffness.

Mat - Continuous strand mats are the additional reinforcements in pultruded components and some hand layup components. These components offer transverse strength.

Veil - Veils are used to enhance surface characteristics of pultruded components and some hand layup parts. This constituent is applied to the outside of the part, allowing a resin rich surface to form which improves corrosion resistance and results in a more hand-friendly part.

The following tables were developed based on tests conducted on full sections of American Gratings Structural shapes. Testing was done to determine the ultimate stress vs. slenderness ratios. The following allowable concentric axial stress load tables were generated based on these ratios. A safety factor of three has been used in these tables.
