•Aging = ▫the process begins when your body has

completely developed

Statistics• 1900 –

▫ 1 out of 25 Americans over 65

• 1995 – ▫ 1 out of 10 Americans over

65• 2025 –

▫ 1 out of 2-3 Americans over 65

Life Expectancy

•Researchers believe that the average life expectancy in the United States would be 90 if people would choose a healthier lifestyle.

•Life expectancy is less at birth than it is at the age of 1.

•Once a person reaches the age of 79 they should expect to live another 5/10 years.

Social Concerns

•loneliness•feel isolated when friends & spouse die•difficult to make new friends & social

relationships•need someone to talk to•someone to care for them•someone to listen to•someone to do things with•transportation is a problem

Mental Aspects of Aging

•Depression – mood swings, affects mental functions

•Dementia – a condition in which the thinking process is impaired▫short attention span, memory loss, inability

to handle simple math problems, loss of concept, time or place, personality changes.

•Alzheimer’s Disease – a form of dementia; 5% over ago of 65 & 25% over age 85

Caring for the ElderlyThe main cause of death for the elderly is long term disorders

Caring for the Elderly

•Osteoporosis – a disorder of aging where thinning of the bones occurs

•Hospice – a facility where people are dying and their families

•Nursing Home - usually for the elderly who need assistance; 5% of the elderly live in nursing homes

Caring for the Elderly

•Adult Day Care – similar to child day care except this is obviously for adults

•Retirement Communities – age minimum; healthy elders; may have health care facility, shopping center, recreational center; one floor – smaller homes

•In-home Care – ramps; expanded door ways; increased lighting; lower cabinets

Types of Elderly Abuse

•Neglect: +/- 50% of mistreatment ▫Self-neglect: failure to provide for

oneself / threatens one’s health▫Caregiver neglect: Failure to provide

care & services which threatens the older person’s health

•Abuse: + /- 30% of mistreatment ▫Physical: Injury; pain unreasonable;

confinement without food, care & medication

▫Emotional: Verbal abuse, intimidation; isolation

▫Sexual: Rape; sexual harassment; molestation

Types of Elderly Abuse

•Exploitation: +/- 20% of mistreatment▫Taking of financial resources by threat,

deceit or force.•Abandonment: +/- 2% of mistreatment

▫Desertion of an older adult by a caretaker

Characteristics and Signs of Elderly Mistreatment

• bruises• broken bones• abrasions• poor hygiene• malnourished• dehydrated• over/under medicated• anxious• timid• depressed• seldom seen / never seen• missing – glasses, dentures, hearing

aids, etc.
