Tientallen vluchtelingen zijn in oktober 2013 in de woestijn van Niger van de dorst omgekomen. Ze reden met twee voer-tuigen richting Algerije om van daaruit Europa te bereiken. Toen één van de voer-tuigen pech kreeg, werd beslist om een kleine groep er met het andere voertuig op uit te sturen om reservedelen voor de kapotte wagen te zoeken. Zij wisten de stad Arlit te bereiken, maar alle hulp kwam te laat. Vijf lichamen werden terug-gevonden, 35 anderen bleven vermist. Dat meldde de BBC. De zoektocht naar overlevenden werd stopgezet. Begin oktober kwamen meer dan 300 mensen om toen een boot kapseisde nabij het Italiaanse eiland Lampedusa. In die hele maand verdronken er meer dan 400 vluchtelingen in de Middellandse Zee. De Europese leiders bespraken het thema op een top in Brussel, maar kwamen niet verder dan wat beloftes om de mensen-handel harder aan te pakken. Volgens de ngo United stierven er sinds 1993 meer dan 20.000 vluchtelingen aan de grenzen van Europa. Dagelijks krijgen we massaal nieuws over vluchtelingen wereldwijd over ons uitgestrooid. Mensen op de vlucht voor oorlog, repressie, armoede, honger, drugscriminaliteit. In Europa roert het volk zich om onder aanvoering van populisten het fort Europa onneem-baar te maken en om tevens de luiken van de ramen te sluiten om ons het zicht op de ellende te ontnemen. In de jaren ’30 van de vorige eeuw werd er door Herman

Wolf, de grootvader van de Nederlandse schrijver en hoogleraar Europese studies Paul Scheffer, een comité van waakzaam-heid tegen Hitler opgericht. De nood-zaak hiertoe is er volgens Scheffer weer nu identieke verschijnselen als 80 jaar geleden de kop opsteken. Het nationa-lisme bloeit op. Blijkbaar is men er nog steeds niet van overtuigd dat elk leven in principe even waardevol is.

European leaders discussed the theme at a meeting in Brussels, but got no further than making a few promises to take a tougher stance on human traf-ficking. According to the NGO United, more than 20,000 refugees have died on the borders of Europe since 1993. Every day, we are inundated with news about refugees all over the world; people fleeing from war, repression, poverty, hunger and drugs crimes. In Europe, populists stir up the people to make the European fortress impregnable and to pull down the shutters, so we cannot see the misery. In the 1930’s, Herman Wolf, the grandfa-ther of the Dutch writer and professor of European studies Paul Scheffer, set up a vigilance committee against Hitler. Scheffer believes that such measures are now necessary once again, with the emergence of signs that are identical to 80 years ago. Nationalism is flourishing, and people are apparently still not convinced that every life is equally valuable in principle.

In October 2013, dozens of refugees died of thirst in the Niger desert. They were travelling in two vehicles in the direction of Algeria, to try and reach Europe from there. When one of the vehicles broke down, it was decided to send a small group on ahead in the other vehicle to look for spare parts for the one that had broken down. Although they managed to reach the town of Arlit, help came too late. The BBC reported that five bodies had been found, but thirty-five others were missing. The search for survivors was halted. At the beginning of Octo-ber, more than 300 people died when a

In elections, well-known voting methods often have drawbacks that may lead to very strange outcomes, as will be illustra-ted. In his book Majority Judgment: Mea-suring, Ranking, and Electing, Rida Laraki introduces a new and revolutionary voting method that better meets the traditional criteria of what constitutes a good me-thod. This Majority Judgment is a much more meaningful and realistic selection procedure, as is shown by comparing it with the familiar methods for several practical situations.

For a long time, we believed that we inhabited a gravity-driven universe. According to Rennison, however, we live in an electromagnetic universe. Thousands of scientists are currently studying the behaviour of the sun to predict space weather. Plasma and particle bursts can and have disrupted satellites, high-frequency radio communications, GPS systems and power grids, etc. Looking at the rather turbulent life our sun is presently leading, more is on the way. Most textbooks and literature about cosmology are completely out of date, so Rennison is informing people about why scientists studying space weather have had to abandon many of their former ideas. But the concept of an electromagnetic universe is already over a hundred years old, having been promoted by great Nobel Prize-winning minds like Hannes Alfvén.

The escape of the Danish Jews from the Nazi persecution in October 1943 is a compelling story. It confirms that Den-mark was a unique exception from the dismal history of the Holocaust. What made Denmark exceptional? And how can the very different developments in occu-pied countries such as the Netherlands, Norway and Denmark be explained? In his lecture, Bo Lidegaard will draw on his recent book, Countrymen. He will seek to explain and discuss what made the escape of the Danish Jews possible. The lecture will start by looking at the inter-nal factors that changed the dynamics between the Nazi occupying power, the Danish Jews and the surrounding society, and go on to draw comparisons with the Holocaust experience of the Netherlands and Norway.

Dr. Bo Lidegaard is one of the most respected and widely read Danish historians, and the author of several bestselling books on modern history.

The targeted killing of insurgents of Al-Qaeda and the Taliban with killer robots (unmanned combat aerial vehicles) or drones has become a new method of warfare employed by the United States. Do these drones make the world a safer place? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using drones? Will their use ignite a new arms race? What are the consequences for the military and for the individual soldier? During the first part of the lecture, Homan introduces us to drone warfare, going on to discuss the concept of automated killing. Up to now, killer robots have been remote-controlled machines, with humans remaining in the loop. What if robots were to be allowed to make their own decisions? In the second part of the lecture, Lijnzaad will focus on the legal framework for the use of drones. What are forbidden weapons? Do drone attacks contravene international humanitarian law? What about human rights? What about the killing of innocent civilians?

Thousands of asylum seekers flee to Mediterranean Europe every year, filling migrant reception centres to many times their capacity. How does Europe deal with immigration? Isn’t it time for the EU to set up an improved, common, comprehen-sive approach to migration management and come up with long-term solutions? What changes should be made? Does the Dublin II Regulation need revision? Does the new European Border Surveillance system, Eurosur, represent a real solu-tion? What about the human rights of the refugees?

Prof. Frank Huisman, the Maastricht scientist behind the SIT movement, will enter into debate with rector Luc Soete, chairman of the board, Martin Paul and many others. The panel chairman is Prof. Tsjalling Swierstra.

Stephen Hawking and Thomas Hertog met nearly fifteen years ago in Cambridge and they have been on the same scien-tific wavelength ever since. Hawking’s favourite subject of study is cosmology: the science of the universe as a whole. Hawking’s goal, as he likes to put it, is to understand `why the universe is the way it is’. In this lecture, Hertog describes the evolution in Hawking’s thinking about our universe, and the place of mankind in the grand scheme of things. He explains how Hawking’s ideas have revolutionised our understanding of how our universe began, and sketches the world view that arises from this.

After his Master’s in Cambridge, Hertog was given the opportunity to complete his PhD in the field of cosmic inflation under Stephen Hawking. Afterwards, he worked at the University of California, the Université de Paris VII and at CERN in Geneva. With Stephen Hawking and James Hartle, Hertog carried out work in the field of quantum cosmology and string theory.

Neoliberalism informs us that our welfare depends on markets being free of govern-ment intervention. However, many people have opposed this view, arguing that it does not take into account the moral aspect of human interactions. Morality is indeed something that economic models cannot usually include, so we cannot expect economic theory to lead to moral market regulations. Highlighted by the hundreds of recent protests, two of the fundamental ques-tions of our time are: How could our current economic system be moral? And what will happen to our society and final-ly to economic theory, if markets do not behave morally and do not create bene-fits for the masses? Join tonight’s Debate Café to discuss this important issue with a panel of experts.

Africa’s economy is growing rapidly. According to the African Development Bank, one-third of Africa’s countries have GDP growth rates of more than 6%. Many new Chinese companies are investing in Africa, improving the infrastructure, but also arguably exploiting the resources. Western aid agencies and NGOs still play

an important role, but the question is whether the idea of foreign aid is still a valid concept or more of a hindrance for the development of Africa (economically or otherwise). Will the African nations choose their own development paths, away from the former colonial powers, and implement active policies for economic transformation? And how should we interpret China’s efforts to increase its presence in Africa? Does it pose a threat to the African people or is it an opportunity for change?

The 20th century was one of the most significant and exciting periods ever wit-nessed in philosophy, characterised by intellectual change in a challenging con-text. These lectures present a colourful picture of the intellectual heroes and key themes of 20th-century philosophy. The central ideas of five philosophers will be introduced: Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Derrida, Rorty and Habermas. Themes like art, moral dilemmas, language, world disclosure, politics, literature, social pathologies and being-towards-death will be discussed with reference to these philosophers. Although it is impossible to focus on every

philosophical detail, the lectures cover the main movements of philosophy over the last hundred years: existentialism, analytical philosophy, pragmatism, post structuralism, deconstructivism and critical theory. These movements will be woven together in a narrative history that accounts for the influence of arts, science and politics. In recent decades, knowledge regarding the way each person’s genetic repertoire is revealed and passed on to the next generation has increased enormous-ly. Furthermore, scientists have disco-vered many genetic disorders that result in disease and infertility, as well as ways of diagnosing them in order to prevent their transmission to future generations. In this series we look into the world of genetics and reproduction, and the deve-lopments that have taken place over the years, including the moral, ethical, socie-tal and legal issues surrounding genetic research and its application in healthcare.

De wereld beantwoordt niet aan het starre beeld dat de klassieke natuurkunde zich ervan gevormd heeft. In werkelijkheid speelt ook de waarnemer een rol bij de bepaling van het verschijnsel dat hij waarneemt. Of een lichtstraal zich gedraagt als een stroom deeltjes of als een golf, hangt af van hoe het licht wordt waargenomen. Beide verschijningsvormen sluiten elkaar weliswaar uit, zijn zelfs tegenstrijdig, maar tonen allebei iets van wat licht in werkelijkheid is.

“Iedere mens verlangt van nature naar kennis” zegt Aristoteles (384 - 322 v. Chr.). Deze nieuwsgierigheid naar de wereld om ons heen, naar verklaringen, naar de moraal, naar het doel van het menselijk leven etc. vormt de bron van de wijsbegeerte, zeker van die in de klassieke Oudheid. Hierbij gaat het niet alleen om het zoeken naar mogelijke antwoorden, maar ook naar het goed en steeds opnieuw formuleren van vragen. De klassieke Oudheid levert het fundament voor de hele latere (westerse) wijsbegeerte.

Ongeveer een eeuw geleden ontdekte de Deense fysicus Bohr deze complementariteit in de natuur. Complementariteit vormt een van de basisprincipes van de zogenaamde Kopenhagen-interpretatie van de kwantummechanica. Einstein verzette zich tegen deze interpretatie omdat zij hem niet in overeenstemming leek met een natuur die onafhankelijk van de waarnemer bestaat. Bohr en Heisenberg verdedigden het standpunt dat de mens niet de natuur op zichzelf bestudeert, maar de manier waarop de waarnemer met haar interacteert.

De antieke Stoïsche wijsheidsleer van Seneca past in de huidige belangstelling voor filosofie als ‘levenskunst’. Zijn brieven en traktaten over ethiek worden ook in Nederland vertaald en druk bestudeerd. Minder bekend is het tiental tragedies dat onder zijn naam is overgeleverd. Deze Latijnse drama’s, veelal zelfstandige bewerkingen van Griekse tragedies, presenteren het tragische lot van beroemde personages als Medea, Phaedra, Oedipus, Thyestes.  In deze toneelstukken zijn opvattingen uit de Stoïsche levensleer verwerkt. Seneca’s spectaculaire en gruwelijke tragedies hebben in de 16e-17e eeuw het Europese drama diepgaand beïnvloed (vgl. Shakespeare, Vondel, Corneille) en werden in de tweede helft van de 20e eeuw herontdekt (vgl. Hugo Claus, Thyestes, Phaedra, Oedipus). Ook zijn toneelstukken dragen bij tot de levenskunst en zijn mede te beschouwen als ‘geestelijke oefeningen’.

Het leven op aarde is volledig afhankelijk van het licht en de warmte van de zon. Daarnaast is de zon de drijvende kracht achter weer en klimaat. Het is dan ook op zijn minst verontrustend dat we de zon niet echt begrijpen. Catastrofale uitbarstingen zien we niet aankomen, de oorzaak van de elfjarige zonnecyclus is onbekend en niemand weet welke rol de zon speelt in de opwarming van de aarde. Schilling vertelt u vanavond wat we wél weten over de zon, welke onopgeloste raadsels en mysteries er nog zijn, en hoe de verre toekomst van onze eigen ster er uitziet.

Schilling is wetenschapsjournalist en publicist op het gebied van de sterrenkunde. In 1989 ontving hij (samen met ESA-astronaut Wubbo Ockels) de Simon-Stevinkijker voor zijn bijdragen aan de popularisering van de sterrenkunde.

Op deze avond presenteren we een brede waaier van regionaal historisch onderzoek naar de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Bronzwaer gaat in op de verschillen in de Duitse bezetting van Luik en Maastricht en op de gevolgen hiervan. Cammaert bespreekt de geschiedenis van het verzet in Limburg. Van Rens behandelt de vervolging van Joden en Sinti in Limburg en de regionale verschillen binnen Limburg. Claudia Hartman en Julien Beuken hebben onderzoek gedaan naar het geschiedenisonderwijs. Hieruit blijkt dat er weinig aandacht wordt besteed aan de regionale verschillen en aan het feit dat er ook veel Sinti en Roma zijn vermoord. Beiden hebben een alternatieve geschiedenisles voor het middelbaar onderwijs geschreven en getest.

Op Kerstmis 800 werd Karel de Grote in de Sint Pieter in Rome tot keizer gekroond, driehonderd jaar nadat de laatste keizer van het Westen was afgezet. De vraag is of hier een oude traditie nieuw leven werd ingeblazen of dat de kroning het begin inluidde van een nieuwe tijd. Karel zag zichzelf zeker als de wettige erfgenaam van de Romeinse keizers en deed er alles aan om de klassieke cultuur nieuw leven in te blazen, de Karolingische Renais-sance. Maar er is veel voor te zeggen dat hij in feite een nieuw Europa in het leven riep zonder zich daarvan bewust te zijn, een Europa waarvan het centrum niet langer in het zuiden lag maar in het noor-den en waarin voortaan bestuurd werd in overleg en niet per keizerlijk decreet, een traditie waaraan Europa tot nu toe heeft vastgehouden.

Sommige delen van ons brein moeten waken terwijl we slapen. Ze beginnen vreemde verhalen te spinnen. Je moet een examen over doen waar je al lang geleden voor geslaagd bent. Je rent naar treinen die je niet haalt. Je ontmoet mensen die niet meer leven. Je staat opeens naakt tussen je collega’s. De meeste verhalen vervliegen bij het ontwaken. Wat blijft zijn de vragen. Waarom accepteer je in je droom bizarre situaties als volkomen vanzelfsprekend? Bestaan voorspellende dromen? Dromen we in zwart-wit of kleur? Hoe zien dromen van blinden eruit? En natuurlijk de moeilijkste vraag: betekenen dromen iets? Is de monumentale Traumdeutung (1900) van Sigmund Freud achterhaald? Of je nu de meubels in je huis of je boodschappen combineert, of de tafel schikt en je vrienden koppelt, optimaliteit telt. Een school wil klassen en docenten combineren in een optimaal schoolrooster, spoorwegen willen optimale treincombinaties, en een bedrijf wil opdrachten combineren in optimale werkpakketten. Het vakgebied dat dit soort vraagstukken onderzoekt heet combinatorische optimalisering. Het leidt tot fundamentele vragen over de complexiteit van combinatorische problemen. Schrijver legt dit uit aan de hand van het befaamde handelsreizigersprobleem en van het maken van de dienstregeling voor de Nederlandse Spoorwegen.

De wereld om ons heen verandert. De gezondheidszorg vormt hierop geen uitzondering en het huidige business model van de gezondheidszorg is onhoudbaar geworden. Mede ingegeven door maatschappelijke veranderingen, zoals individualisering, globalisering en technologisering, zal de rol van zowel zorgprofessionals als patiënten wezenlijk gaan veranderen. Volgens bloem moeten zorgprofessionals veranderen van almachtige “God” in een coach of gids, die de patiënt steunt in het maken van de juiste beslissingen. Deze nieuwe rol van professionals is de afgelopen jaren vormgegeven in het landelijke ParkinsonNet, met een aangetoond betere kwaliteit van zorg, minder ziektecomplicaties, en een jaarlijkse kostenbeheersing van 15-20 miljoen euro. Bloem gaat uitgebreid in op de totstandkoming van ParkinsonNet, de huidige stand van zaken, evenals enkele belangrijke ontwikkelingen voor de nabije toekomst. De patiënten zullen gaan veranderen van passief object in een actief subject, wat een wezenlijke bijdrage levert aan het handhaven van gezondheid en het herstel bij ziekte.

When you think of afrobeat, then you think of... KOFFIE.The music of KOFFIE can best be described as a mix of afrobeat, jazz, and 70’s funk. “KOFFIE was formed after Fela Kuti opened our ears”, says drummer Otto van der Wotto. Fela’s full sound and great grooves were the reason for delving into afrobeat. Last year, KOFFIE performed at many festivals, including Oerol, Dunya and the Roots Festival Amsterdam. At the same time, the 7 KOFFIE boys recorded their first album in collaboration with vocalist Nassan Silva Lopes. Alongside afrobeat, the source of inspiration for writing their numbers came from Nassan Silva Lopes, whose roots are in Guinea-Bissau (West Africa) and who contributed many traditional rhythms and melodies. The album was released in March 2013.

Abafazi is a group of strong South African women, who tell their life stories through the power of music. Traditionally, the African drum and the melodious marimba are instruments played mainly by men, but the colourful and talented women of Abafazi have succeeded in turning that stereotypical image upside down. They are presenting an energetic, dynamic performance of well-known African hits, their own compositions, dynamic cho-reography, fabulous colourful costumes, wonderful voices and a wide range of African dance styles.

In South Africa, these ‘abafazi’ (translated literally as women) are well-known faces. For instance, they accompanied Shakira at the kick-off of the 2012 World Cup, and they took part in the opening of the Olym-pic Games in China.

Each year, thousands of men and women in Switzerland are imprisoned without trial or sentence. They may be deprived of liberty for up to eighteen months before being deported, simply because they are living in the country illegally. For nine months, Melgar immersed himself in the administrative detention centre Frambois in Geneva, which accommodates rejected

asylum seekers and illegal migrants. Some of these people have been established in Switzerland for years, and have jobs and families there. But one day, the cantonal immigration authorities arbitrarily decide to imprison them, in order to ensure their departure. The problem is that no inmate is willing to leave the country voluntarily. Thus begins a relentless administrative procedure to force them onto ‘the special flight’.

In the mid-19th century, hundreds of thousands of Europeans emigrated to South America. It was a desperate bid to escape the famine, poverty and despo-tism that ruled at home. Their motto was:“Any fate is better than death”. Die an-dere Heimat is a domestic drama and love story set against the backdrop of this forgotten tragedy. Though in several ways related to the famous Heimat television series, this beautifully shot black-and-white feature is accessible for those unfa-miliar with Edgar Reitz’s previous work.

Waarom rust er nog steeds een groot taboe op de genocide op de Roma en Sinti? Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden er meer dan 500.000 ver-moord. De in Kosovo geboren Roma radioverslaggever Galjus gaat samen met vriend en filmmaker Entrop op zoek naar het antwoord op deze vraag. In ‘Verbroken Stilte’ reizen zij samen door Kosovo, Duitsland en Polen. Galjus ziet hoe de geschiedenis van toen zich in het heden herhaalt door de toenemende mate van discriminatie van zijn volk. Galjus en Entrop zijn aanwezig bij de voorstelling en gaan na afloop in gesprek met het publiek.

Hiertoe richt ze sub-sidieverzoeken aan gemeente, provincie, fondsen en goede doelenstichtingen en legt ze contacten met donateurs, begun-stigers en sponsors. Met haar subsidies stelt ze het SG in staat jaarlijks de Global Culture Nights en de Avond van het Woord te organiseren. Wat is Studium Generale? / What is Studium Generale? Studium Generale is een programma van activiteiten op het gebied van brede wetenschappelijke, maatschappelijke en cul-turele vorming. Het bestaat uit lezingen, debatten, collegereek-sen, concerten, filmvertoningen en cabaretvoorstellingen.Het Studium Generale is een activiteit van de Universiteit MaastrichtStudium Generale is a program of activities covering a broad spectrum of scientific, social and cultural topics of education. It consists of lectures, debates, lecture series, concerts, movies and comedy performances. Studium Generale is part of the Maastricht University.

SG-Agenda / 13 January – 25 February De SG-Agenda is een uitgave van Studium Generale Maastricht met informatie over het programma van het SG. Ze verschijnt vier maal per jaar en wordt verspreid over een groot aantal adressen in Maastricht. Geïnteresseerden van buiten de Universiteit Maastricht kunnen de SG-Agenda gratis thuis ont-vangen. Aanvang en einde van de activiteiten / Start and end of activitiesDe lezingen beginnen om 20.00 uur. De avonden worden afgesloten om uiterlijk 22.00 uur. Voor de overige activiteiten gelden vaak afwijkende tijden. The lectures start at 8 pm. The evenings are concluded no later than 10 pm. To other activities sometimes other times apply.

Toegang / AccessTenzij anders staat aangegeven zijn de activiteiten gratis toegankelijk. Unless otherwise specified, the activities are free of charge.
