Director of Soil Health

Program Updates

INfield Advantage

• CSNT stalk sampling supplies were distributed through three regional collections between August 7 and September 10.

• Crews have been collecting stalk samples since August 20. As of September 13, 27% of the samples have been collected. This is about double of last year’s rate.

• The Group Leader Appreciation Lunch is scheduled for November 8 at ICMC/ISA’s office. The agenda is still being finalized.

• The Winter Grower Meeting schedule should be finalized by the end of October. We are slightly delayed while the Regional Winter Meeting locations are settled.

Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative

• Received a SARE PDP jointly with IANA to adapt the soil health curriculum for retailers

• In July, Hoosier Ag aired its first CCSI sponsored soil health podcast. The second dropped in August.

• The second program manager, Trisha McClain, started this month. She is covering the northern portion of the state. Ashley Brucker has shifted to the southern portion.

• About 80 people attended either Advanced Soil Health training or the Three Day Soil Health Training. The Three Day Training attendees maxed out the session and CCSI is considering holding another in 2019, rather than waiting until 2020.

• The John Kemp Specialty Crops Tour attracted about 400 attendees, of whom about 75% were Amish or Mennonite. Sessions were hosted in LaGrange, Marion (for ICP staff), Montgomery and Parke Counties.

• CCSI hosted, jointly with the Madison SWCD and the Soil Health Partnership, a workshop on Soil Health Systems for Organic Transition that was attended by 80, mostly new, people.

Red Gold Tomato Conservation Stewardship Award

• The 2018 winner and runner up were announced on August 3.

• The winner was Lieven Bros. of Petersburg, MI. They have been with Red Gold for nearly 30 years.

• The runner up was McKillip Farms of Wabash. This is the first time McKillip Farms received recognition.

District Support Specialist (DSS) Report: 7/14/18 to 9/7/18

August/September SWCD Region Meetings:

Two region meetings were held. In the southwest, approximately 44 people attended the session. Roundtables focused on meeting our new Partner Leaders (Bruce Kettler, Joe Schmees, Jerry Raynor), working with your community foundation, and talking with your legislators. A tour of Nolan Farms was given too, focusing on soil health. In the southeast, key presentation topics included the weather climate, Indiana Agriculture Nutrient Alliance, and Cooperative Invasive Species Management Areas.

The northwest region meeting has been rescheduled for November 15. All region meeting info can be found online: https://tinyurl.com/RegionMeetings2018

ISDA – CREP & Water Quality Initiatives, Julie Harrold

Program Updates

Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program • Interest is still running high and we are continuing to sign up landowners every week. • The current contracts that ISDA has with the 10 SWCD Administrators are due to expire at the end

of the 2018 calendar year. We are creating new 4-year contracts with all of the administrating districts, which will include the allocation of the additional support dollars and any existing/remaining dollars in their watershed accounts. These contracts should go out to the Administrators the week of Sept. 17th or week of Sept. 24th for signature.

• Attached to this report is a report on the current status of acres and dollars in CREP, including total completed acres and total enrolled acres since the beginning of the program, and total dollars paid out through the CREP program. To date, the state has paid out more than $5.6 million. For every state dollar that is spent, the federal match is an average of $4-$13 for every state dollar.

IN State Nutrient Reduction Strategy (SNRS)

• The Strategy is due to be updated this year with the final planned to be out in November of 2018. • The SNRS Workgroup met on September 5th and had a good meeting. We plan to meet again in

mid to late October to discuss and reexamine the priority watersheds for the nutrient reduction strategy.

• The current version of the Strategy can be found on the ISDA webpage at http://www.in.gov/isda/2991.htm.

• Comments on the SNRS can be sent to [email protected]. • To view the GIS Basin Story maps that were created to make the strategy more interactive, visit

the ISDA webpage at http://www.in.gov/isda/2991.htm. • As part of the SNRS and the work of the Gulf Hypoxia Task Force, ISDA is working with Purdue

University in support of developing a Nutrient Reduction Estimation Framework Workshop. The goal is to convene a group of researchers, experts and staff to discuss and develop a framework for establishing nutrient reduction estimates from the implementation of conservation practices in Indiana and their impact on water quality. This could be a step in the direction of having an Indiana Science Assessment. The ICP and IANA are in full support of this effort as well, and are a part of the planning committee.

Gulf Hypoxia Task Force (HTF)

• The HTF face-to-face meeting that was to be held in Baton Rouge, LA this week has been postponed due to Hurricane Florence.

Western Lake Erie Basin

• To view the Indiana WLEB Domestic Action Plan (DAP) and other information, visit the following webpage, http://www.in.gov/isda/3432.htm.

• To view the National Lake Erie DAP, visit https://www.epa.gov/glwqa/us-action-plan-lake-erie

• IANA and ISDA have submitted a proposal to EPA for GLRI funds to continue and expand upon the current phosphorus soil sampling and manure sampling program in the WLEB. One of the focuses of the grant is to work more with Certified Crop Advisors (CCAs) and Ag Retailers. We have not yet heard whether our proposal has been accepted, but hope to soon.
