NEWMARKET HIGH SCHOOL
Newmarket High School is firmly rooted in its community; as such, NHS builds on a long-standing tradition, which enables its staff and students to respond effectively to new demands and challenges brought on by a changing environment. Throughout all changes, the school’s community is aware of the importance of maintaining a warm family atmosphere, which supports the needs of its students.
Newmarket High School addresses the concerns and needs of the whole person through its regular programming, additional supports and co-curricular activities. The school strives to maintain a positive environment in which cognitive and physical development of its students are promoted in association with an awareness of appropriate values, both moral and societal.
Newmarket High School nurtures a climate for school life in which interpersonal, as well as school and community, relationships may grow. The school not only promotes open communication between staff and students, but also fosters the same attitude in its communication with parents and with the community at large.

Questions and Answers
Q: What level of fluency will my child achieve if she/he takes the French Immersion program?
A: Most students who complete the French Immersion program achieve a level of fluency considered by the Government of Canada as “functionally bilingual”.
Q: What can parents do to support their children enrolled in French Immersion courses?
A: The most important thing parents can do is to be encouraging and show interest in their child’s learning. Parents can encourage using French language outside of the classroom (e.g. plan family excursions to French-speaking locales, watch French televi-sion, visit cultural events, etc.)

All academic and applied courses set high expectations for students. Academic and applied courses differ in the balance between essential concepts and additional material, and in the balance between theory and application. APPLIED COURSES: Applied courses focus on the essential concepts of the discipline. They develop students’ knowledge and skills by emphasizing practical, concrete applications of essential concepts of the course, and incorporating theoretical applications, as appropriate. ACADEMIC COURSES: Academic courses focus on the essential concepts of the discipline and also explore related concepts. They develop students’ knowledge and skills by emphasizing theoretical, abstract applications of the essential concepts of the course, and incorporating practical applications, as appropriate.

LOCALLY DEVELOPED COURSES in Grade 9 and Grade 10
The Ministry of Education has approved the use of locally-developed compulsory courses. These courses have been developed to meet the educational needs of students whose skills fall below grade level. It is a guided approach to learning using practical examples and concrete objects. Each student’s strengths and needs will determine appropriate pathways through secondary school and in the school-to-work transition.
