Questions and Answers

Q: What level of fluency will my child achieve if she/he takes the French Immersion program?

A: Most students who complete the French Immersion program achieve a level of fluency considered by the Government of Canada as “functionally bilingual”.

Q: What can parents do to support their children enrolled in French Immersion courses?

Newmarket High School offers Advanced Placement courses (AP). These courses allow students to enrich their studies with university-level academic learning. This international program, administered by the College Board, is a cooperative educational endeavour between secondary schools and Canadian universities/American colleges.

Students are given the opportunity to show that they have mastered the advanced material by taking standardized AP exams, for which they may receive credit, advanced placement or both from thousands of colleges and universities that participate in the College Board AP Program.

All academic and applied courses set high expectations for students. Academic and applied courses differ in the balance between essential concepts and additional material, and in the balance between theory and application. APPLIED COURSES: Applied courses focus on the essential concepts of the discipline. They develop students’ knowledge and skills by emphasizing practical, concrete applications of essential concepts of the course, and incorporating theoretical applications, as appropriate. ACADEMIC COURSES: Academic courses focus on the essential concepts of the discipline and also explore related concepts. They develop students’ knowledge and skills by emphasizing theoretical, abstract applications of the essential concepts of the course, and incorporating practical applications, as appropriate.

LOCALLY DEVELOPED COURSES in Grade 9 and Grade 10

The Ministry of Education has approved the use of locally-developed compulsory courses. These courses have been developed to meet the educational needs of students whose skills fall below grade level. It is a guided approach to learning using practical examples and concrete objects. Each student’s strengths and needs will determine appropriate pathways through secondary school and in the school-to-work transition.
