Family Development Program

Change graduation requirements from classroom hours to measured proficiency in core subjects.

Offer programs to solve family alcohol and substance abuse problems

Offer after school opportunities for parents

Provide students and families with computer access

Ensure smaller class size

Schools should provide more information about vocational education and alternatives to college

Develop and strengthen community-based service learning programs for middle school and high school students

Offer more summer learning opportunities for students

Invest in professional development for school staff and teachers

Support programs and other community efforts to decrease truancy and improve attendance

Offer more before and after school opportunities for students

Help students and families make the transition to middle and high school

Develop more interest-based programs to engage students

Support and expand the "Community Schools" model

Accommodate cultural and language diversity in schools to ensure equal access for all families

Ensure more family support services in community

Provide more support for early childhood programs

Some Survey Comments•Create a culture and expectation that parents will hold children to high standards•Have ongoing cultural humility trainings for administrators, teachers and staff where community experts and members can be• ….When students see their families in the schools, being respected and engaged in positive ways, they are much more apt to both stay in school and respond positively to focused support to address their individual issues around staying in school•Provide mentors•It is important to address poverty and income/resource gaps•Most priorities listed above are geared toward lower-income families, however middle-class, college educated families need help keeping their kids engaged in school•It is not enough to make sure students and family has a computer...they need access to the web
