ADVOCACY

Completed Action 2015 Campaign Nepal Ageing Nepal Kathmandu, January Ageing Nepal organized various programmes to mark the global launching of action/2015 campaign in Jan 15. The main theme taken was Mainstreaming of Ageing Population for Sustainable Development. Action/2015NEPAL campaign team of ageing Nepal took commitment of the concerned government authorities, mainly that of Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare (MoWCS) – focal ministry for the concerns of ageing population, and Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). Other social and professional groups involved were retired officer, literary group, academicians, media houses, to name a few. The team also visited rural areas jointly with Nursing students for the awareness of action 2015, Worked with Under 15 children, general public, and the community groups in rural and urban Nepal. The only two regular publications of Nepal on ageing issues, namely the monthly Voice of Senior Citizens and bimonthly 50+ page magazine Jyestha Nagarik (senior citizens) in Nepali language, were also launched to mark the occasion. Senior Citizens Felicitated Following program were organized in the month of January to felicitate senior citizens.

Support Provided Following events took place for supporting OAHs and the destitute elderly.

Sita Ram Sings for Elderly Kantipur Damak, January 7, 2015 Senior singer Sitaram Tajpuriya has recently performed for the senior citizens. Tajpuriya who has been living in his home in Jhapa after his retirement from the Radio Nepal entertained the senior citizens by singing some of his best folk songs in the function hosted by the Senior Citizens Civil Felicitation Academy.

Elder Service Centre to Fight Loneliness Kantipur Lalitpur, January 26, 2015 The newly established Day Care Centre of Bandegaun has turned a meeting point for the senior citizens of the area to talk, sing hymns and sip tea. Pashupati Maharjan, 84, of local Bugal Tole and other senior citizens reach the centre every day and engage in different entertaining activities. With the creation of the Day Care Centre, the elderly do not have to feel loneliness during the day time when all family members go to work.

Land Donated For Old Age Home Gorkhapatra Sankhu, January 29, 2015 Generous people have donated a Ropani (0.05 ha) of land and cash Rs. 3.4 million to build an old age home at Suntol-8 near the Salinadi area. One local resident Thakur Prasad Khanal donated the land whereas the cash was collected at a Mahayangya (a religious function) organized in the area.

Locals Demand Action against Employees Who Misuse SSA Kantipur Jajarkot, January 19, 2015 Locals of Lahan and Bhagawati VDCs in the district have demanded actions against the VDC secretaries and other staff who have distributed the social allowance by creating fake individuals. An investigation team of the Ministry of Federal affairs (MoFA), Ministry of Local Development (MoLD) and District Development Committee (DDC) found embezzlement of the allowance in Lahan VDC and submitted a report to the Ministry two months back. When no action was taken against the corrupted secretary and other staff, the locals have been disappointed.

Elderly without Identity Kantipur Lothar, Januray 25, 2015 An elderly couple Goman Singh Chepang, 78 and Sahili Maya, 75 still do not have citizenship certificate. A team of journalists who visited them few weeks back found that the elderly have not heard about citizenship card and what is it used for.

Model Agro-Farm of Elderly Couple Kantipur Dailekh, January 4, 2015 83 years old couple Sarvajeet and Krishna Khadka of Kattidhar is busy in their model farm. Now they are earning Rs. 250,000 annually by selling vegetables, tea and cardamom from their two Ropanis (0.1 ha.) agro farm. Sarbajit is popular among the people and government authorities in the district with his newly given nick name 'Alaichi Baje' meaning “Cardamom Grandfather”. Many visit him to buy the seeds and samplings of plants.

Senior Citizens Busy Doing Homework Kantipur Dailekh January 8, 2015 Elderly of Paganath VDC in Dailekh are now attending classes of informal education under the vocational literacy programme. 1,701 senior citizens including SitalaThapa, 67, of Panath 5 and Mansingh Buda, 67, of Pagantah are taking 2 to 4 hour class every day except on Saturdays. 'Guleli Baje' Turns 'Dolphin Celebrity' At 80! Gorkhapatra Dhangadhi January 8, 2015 Many foreign journalists, actors and tourists want to have photograph of 80-year Bhojraj Shrestha aka Guleli Baje of Kailali. A few of them are trying to make a docudrama on his life. Shrestha received this popularity because of his efforts in preserving the Dolphins of Gangetic spices in Karnali, Mohana and Paraiya rivers. Now many take this old man as Dolphin Celebrity.

Septuagenarian Chepang Preserves and Promotes Water Mill Kantipur Makwanpur, January 17, 2015 Sahila Chepang, 74, is the only person in Gopirang village who can build traditional water mill in the Namtar and Kalikatar area. This septuagenarian nick named ‘Ghatte Budha’ or “watermill old man” annually 10 water mills but considering the labour required in preparing the mill, his wage looks very meager. However, he has no option but to continue constructing mills as he has 23 family members to feed in the home.

A total 11 elders faced abuse in January 2015 of which 3 died, 6 suffered injuries and health status of the 2 were not reported. Most of the victims were male and most of the culprits were their close relatives mainly the son and son-in-laws.

Son Files Case Against Mother by Preparing Fake Documents Nepal Samacharpatra Parbat, January 24, 2015 Seventy-five-year-old Seti Damini visited the district court after her eldest son filed a case against her stating that she owed him Rs.250, 000. However, the old lady said her deceased husband had never received any loan from him. She added that her son Sete Damai had prepared a fake document with an intention of torturing her.

Land of OAH Encroached The Himalayan Times January 22, 2015 Officials of the Swargdari Ashram (OAH) claimed that about 1000 Bighas (about 77 ha) of land belonging to the Ashram was encroached in Dang and they urged the concerned stakeholders to help them.

Witchcraft Victim Faces Social Exclusion Kantipur Kailali, January 30, 2015 Raj Kumari Rana Tharu was misbehaved two years ago by her neighbours accusing her of practicing witchcraft has still been unable to mix-up in the society. Nobody in the society wants to be close to her. She fears whether the relatives visit her home during the wedding of her youngest son.

Plights of Elderly Kantipur, Butwal, January 25, 2015 DilBahadur Magar, 75, has been living in the street of Butwal for the past four years. He begs to eat and spends night under open sky near the Lumbini Zonal Hospital. Magar came down to Butwal from Palpa after his wife died and his son fled to India with family. Likewise, Narayandutta Sapkota of Thumdanda, Kaski has been living in the local Siddha Baba Durga Bhawani Shiva Kumari Sainju Old Age Home with his mentally unwell wife. In this way, many news are publishing about the helpless elderly.

Average Life Expectancy of Nepalese Increases by 12 Years Gorkhapatra Kathmandu, January 5, 2015 Average life expectancy of male increased by 5.8 years and of female by 6.6 years in Nepal in the last 23 years from 1990 to 2013, said a report of Global Burden of Disease Study published in the La Lucent Journal. The study team has termed the growth in the average life expectancy of Nepalese as exceptional.
