Introduction
• Demographic changes – increasing older cohorts
• Development of cities – more dispersed, polarised, dangerous etc.
• Feelings of fear – different directions during the life course
• Gaps in research – ageing in urban neighbourhood has mostly been ignored
• Might present additional challenges and risks – feelings of fear and social isolation
Lund university / Technical Faculty / Technology and society / Transport and roads/ Transed2012
Method
• Questionnaire - 2000 randomly collected persons early summer of 2011 (data from the Sound Settlement project)
• Low response rate, 142 responses totally (14 percent) - 39 persons 65 years or older
• Comprising questionnaire – app. 50 questions in Swedish language only, no reminder
• Questions – background, design & shaping, influence, needs, feelings of fear, everyday travel, traffic environment
• Dichotomised variable – secure/unsecure

• Malmö – Swedens third largest city
• Population app. 300 000
• Old industrial city to a city of knowledge
• Social challenges – segregation and gaps
• Foreign background app. 40 percent
• About 17 percent older persons

Discussion
• Growing older in a deprived area can be about feelings of fear in the neighbourhood
• Reducing effects on the feelings of fear? - Knowing where to turn when there is problems in the neighbourhood - Feelings of having an impact on the development in the neighbourhood
• Feelings of fear on local buses – major threat against everyday life mobility
• Extremely low response rate – alternative research methods?
Feelings of fear a threat to the liveable community and the everyday life mobility
