Mayors message
Your April edition of Salisbury Seniors magazine is packed with ideas designed to engage and connect you with the services and programs available both in and around Salisbury. I encourage you to explore what is on offer and with a little effort you can try something new.
There is an extensive Event Calendar with opportunities to engage in physical exercise. Maybe try a walking or cycling group. Learn how to play the ukulele or how to write
your story for publishing. Whatever your situation, I’m sure this Event Guide will give you some great ideas.
The feature article focuses on the refurbished Pine Lakes Community Centre, which now provides programs for senior residents. You will be amazed to read the background of this unique heritage building, which was originally built as a railway station.
We also feature two very satisfied Salisbury seniors who have enjoyed a variety
of services that the City of Salisbury’s Home Assist Team has facilitated.
Don’t miss reading the useful tips on how to use your digital equipment provided by the experts at the Digital Hub or about our volunteering opportunities.
Gilian Aldridge JP Mayor of Salisbury
Dear Resident,My main message for this April edition is to stay connected to this vibrant community of Salisbury and get out and about. You never know what ‘secret’ you might find out! I hope you have all been able to join in the fun and entertainment of the recent City of Salisbury’s contribution to the Adelaide Fringe – our very own ‘Secret Garden’ program.

Nestled amongst stately old pine trees and partially surrounded by a small lake is the recently refurbished Pine Lakes heritage building located at Homestead Place, Parafield Gardens.
In early 2014, Salisbury Council decided on a major upgrade and Pine Lakes now functions as a new social activity centre for seniors over 50’s and is managed by the Community Health and Wellbeing Division.
It caters for the increasing demand for centre based social activities for seniors. The new Centre will also become an important venue for a number of the Home and Community Care (HACC) program social support groups for older people and provide an opportunity to develop new programs as well.
The Pine Lakes Centre will be linked closely with the activities and programs of the Jack Young Centre and the Para Hills Centre.
The area around Pine Lakes was originally occupied by Aboriginal people prior to
European settlement. In 1881 the Government proposed the creation of a general cemetery. A spur line was to be constructed from the Adelaide to Gawler railway line, leading into the proposed cemetery.
A railway station was erected – the heritage Pine Lakes building. The plan for the cemetery was abandoned, but the unique Railway Station building remained.
While still being in the planning stage, Council Staff are looking for ideas from local residents about what activities they would be interested in attending.
To provide ideas or to register your interest in being updated about what is happening and the opportunities available at Pine Lake, please contact Jim Binder, Coordinator Wellbeing Programs – City of Salisbury on 8406 8251 or via [email protected].

Salisbury North resident Mary, 77, began receiving house cleaning support following a stint in hospital two years ago. Mary has continued to contact Home Assist when she needs support including for gutter cleaning, fixing dripping taps and replacing smoke alarm batteries and lightbulbs.
Arranging support can be easy. For example a coordinator arranged for a volunteer gardener to assist Mary with her garden. The bags of leaves were quickly removed by a reliable contractor. Mary and her family are grateful for all the support from Home Assist. Her girls know that she is happy and feels able to cope with living at home independently.
In her words “I’m so happy with Salisbury Council services and especially the way the Home Assist team has understood my needs.
I can have a laugh with Stuart, who is always able to assist me with my enquiries about home maintenance”.
A good neighbour suggested that Anna, 83, contact Home Assist for support after a debilitating bout of flu. Anna said “I couldn’t get into my normal garden maintenance routine, but with one phone call to Council’s Home Assist Office my prayers were answered”. Home Assist arranged for a contractor to modify Anna’s back garden so she could maintain it independently. “Both areas are so easy for me to maintain now,” Anna said. Anna indicated this support means she is able to keep connected with her wonderful neighbours and friends that she meets at her local shopping centre.
Call Home Assist on 8406 8225 if you or someone you know needs support to remain living independently at home in the community.
The City of Salisbury’s Home Assist program is having a positive impact on the lives of many residents that are experiencing difficulties in maintaining their home.
ASSISTANCE IN THE HOME

Life is definitely not dull or boring for Brahma Lodge resident Merry Vandervolk.
Although diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes more than 10 years ago, Merry has continued to update her understanding and awareness on how to live a healthier life style. This has included understanding the correct choices in low GI, carbohydrates and cholesterol foods.
Merry has also found a healthy menu at the Jack Young Centre Café that suits her dietary needs. She enjoys the diabetic friendly, low cholesterol menu, especially the grilled fish and chicken dishes.
Her current favourite is the stir fry chicken dish. “I absolutely love it and I can also purchase it as a takeaway to supplement my meals at home”.
Merry is a great role model for people with a medical condition, in particular Diabetes Type 2, as she has become aware of how to manage her diabetes by attending update information sessions, careful eating, and maintaining her level of fitness. Her fitness regimen includes half an hour of daily walking and a weekly ‘Prime Movers’ exercise class at the Jack Young Centre.
This in turn gives her the energy for her involvement in the Jack Young Centre as a member, as the President of the Salisbury Senior Citizen’s Club, and an Advisory Committee Member and member of the Friendship Club.
Merry recently underwent her annual diabetes review with positive results. “I am proud of my efforts to manage my health,” she said. Merry attributes her wellness to her weekly involvement with the groups at the Jack Young Centre and especially the chicken stir fry’s! Contact the Jack Young Centre on 8406 8525 for more information or to receive a menu!
merry's loving living wellIn 1989 the rate of diabetes in Australia was at manageable levels, but since then it has almost tripled with the population exercising less and consuming more unhealthy foods. In 2011-12 more than 4% of Australians had diabetes. The statistics are staggering and the trends suggest that we could be heading to upwards of 5% of the population being affected by 2020.

WELL BEINGPeople who are healthy and physically active are less likely to need health and aged care services in later life. We are living longer but more of us are living with chronic diseases. The culprits? Common lifestyle risk factors, such as smoking, excess drinking and lack of exercise.
There are four types of regular physical activity that every adult needs:
1. Endurance activities – like walking, swimming or riding a bike – which builds ‘staying power’and improves the health of the heart and circulatory system.
2. Strengthening exercises – which build muscle tissue and reduces age related muscle loss.
3. Stretching exercises to keep the body limber and flexible.
4. Balance exercises to reduce the chances of a fall.
The key to sticking with physical activity is to make it interesting and enjoyable. Love music? Take dancing lessons or join the JYC Dance for Health group. Enjoy the outdoors? Play ‘catch’ with your dog or your grandchildren. Join one of our local Heart Foundation Walking groups. Let us help you discover the joy of cycling through the low level ‘Cycle Salisbury Social Rides’.
Even a modest commitment can achieve great results. The chemistry of your body changes when you exercise regularly (it signals the body to grow, heal and recover).
Be younger next year in all the ways that matter... and if you want some help give Jim Binder, Coordinator Wellbeing programs a ring on 8406 8251.
‘If the last time you exercised, Jane Fonda was wearing leg warmers and a head band, then it’s time to get moving!’ Colin Milner, CEO International Council on Active Ageing, 2012

Many young people and organisations are looking for skilled volunteer mentors who can guide their future development. Learning from people who have ‘been there and done that’ gives others a privileged insight into what to do or what not to do.
A simple web search will detail individual mentoring programs. Most focus on supporting young people with their learning, such as Homework Club, Wheels in Motion and the Tertiary Mentoring Program, or support an individual’s personal development, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters and Welcome to Australia.
Volunteering SA & NT Inc offers a Mentor Service connecting skilled individuals with not-for-profit organisations to assist in key areas such as strategic development, management, finance and marketing.
and mentoring can also be done from the comfort of your own home. Visit www.micromentor.org a free easy-to-use social network that allows entrepreneurs and volunteer mentors to connect to solve problems and build businesses together.
So what’s stopping you? Go online and search for a mentoring opportunity that’s right for you.
In the next edition we’ll take a closer look at virtual volunteering.

If you want to get hands-on with some of the latest devices, each of our libraries has been equipped with a small range of digital devices for you to try out without the pressure of having a salesperson hovering around you.
At the libraries, you will also find resources to help you understand what each device does and how to use them, for example, E-Reader, iPad and Android Tablet.
You can also access the public computers free for up to 55 minutes. There is also free WIFI for library users. If you want to use an E-Reader,

YOUR WISHES FOR
FUTURE CARE
Salisbury SENIORS 25
If this happened to you, how would you want decisions to be made for you about your health care, living arrangements or other personal matters? Who would you want and trust to make these decisions for you?
The new Advance Care Directive is an important step forward in planning for health care that came into effect on 1 July 2014. It enables you to:
• write down your wishes, preferences and instructions for your future health care, end of life, living arrangements and personal matters; and/or
• appoint one or more Substitute Decision-Makers to make these decisions on your behalf if you are unable to make them for yourself.
Having an Advance Care Directive can make it easier for others to know and act upon your wishes if they have to make decisions for you. It can also give you peace of mind that your wishes will be known and be respected if you cannot make these decisions yourself.
You may have heard of documents such as Enduring Power of Guardianship, Medical Power of Attorney and Anticipatory Direction. If you have completed one or more of these documents in the past these are still legal effective post- 1 July 2014 or you can make a new Advance Care Directive.
To assist you to make an Advance Care Directive, a new website has been developed with a step by step guide to help you complete and print your own Advance Care Directive form.
Visit www.advancecaredirectives.sa.gov.au for forms and information.
Kits are also available at Salisbury Libraries, the Jack Young and Para Hills Centres.

Although you may not like to think about it, there could be times in your life when you are unable to make your own health, accommodation and personal decisions due to a serious illness or injury.
AGE FRIENDLY SALISBURYActive ageing and age friendly communities are not just words, they are proven concepts and the City of Salisbury would like your support in the planning of the City's future Ageing Strategy.
The City of Salisbury in collaboration with the University of South Australia are asking residents and stakeholders to participate in a community consultation to help inform the development of the City of Salisbury Age Friendly Strategy.
What do you think is the best thing about growing old in Salisbury?
What could be improved to make Salisbury a better place to grow old in?
