• A Portugese Explorer

• Given credit for traveling around the Southern Tip of Africa, and making it

to India

• He sailed a total of 27,000 miles and his cargo was worth 60 times the cost

of his voyage.

Christopher Columbus

• Sailed from Spain in August of 1492 and made to what is now the Carribean in October of 1492.

• Was looking for a new route West to what is Now India, but in the process "discovered" the Carribean Islands of the Dominican Republic and Haiti

• Boats were called the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria

• Made 4 trips to and from the "New World"

• His original plan was to travel West to get to India to buy spices from India

Ferdinand Magellan

• A Portuguese Explorer

• With 250 men and 5 boats, he sailed around South America to the Phillipines

• Magellan was killed on his voyage.

• Began his voyage in 1519 and ended in 1522

• In the end, only 18 of the 250 men lived, and only 1 of the 5 boats survived

the voyage

• Claimed New Zealand in 1769 and Australia in 1770 for the British Crown

• In Australia he discovered the Aborigines, the oldest ongoing culture in the

world.

• Australia became a penal colony in 1788

Samuel de Champlain

• A French Explorer

• Sailed up the St. Lawrence River in Modern Day Canada.

• Founded the Canadian Province and City of Quebec, which became the base

for France's colonial empire known as NEW FRANCE
