In his first year of competing against older and more experienced riders in the under-17 category, the 14-year-old showed he could more than hold his own against WA’s brightest junior cycling stars. The South West Cycle Club member and Bunbu- ry Catholic College student began 2018 in emphatic fashion. Joshua represented WA against the country’s best at the national junior track championships in Melbourne and was part of a four-person team that broke a State record in the under-17 team pursuit. That effort ensured WA finished with a bronze medal. Joshua also claimed the under-17 State title at this year’s WA Junior Road Championships in August – which earned him a position on the WA team which competed at the recent 2018 Cycling Australia junior road national championships. Most recently, the Eaton-based youngster cemented his status further as a rising star by win- ning the under-17 State criterium championship earlier this month. Joshua Commons is the reigning State under-17 road cycling and criterium champion. Age is no barrier CYCLING Entries for the 2019 SWAS Telstra Fun Run are now open, with people encouraged to get in quick to score free race mer- chandise. The first 100 to sign up for the fifth annual race around Bunbury’s Leschenault Inlet – on Saturday, March 16 – will receive a complimentary T-shirt. All members of the public are encouraged to enter run (2km, 5km or 10km) or walk (5km). Cash prizes are up for grabs in each race category and there is a special prize for the school with the most number of entrants. Walking and run- ning enthusiasts are already gearing up for the event, with local race walking champion Cooper Anderton setting his sights on claiming the 5km walk. South West Academy of Sport chief executive Bernice Butlion said the event was family friendly, with prams and young children welcome. “We’ve made competing in the fun run affordable so eve- ryone can take part — with an emphasis on having a good experience,” Butlion said. The Leschenault teenager picked up the top award at the red-carpet event at the Bunbu- ry Regional Entertainment Centre on December 7, before heading east to contest the Sail Melbourne International regatta with fellow SWAS ath- lete Will Drew. The annual awards dinner is held annually to highlight the achievements of top junior athletes and coaches – with this year’s function celebrat- ing the academy’s 10th anniversary. Highlights of Shannon’s 2017-18 campaign have includ- ed finishing first at the Singa- pore national championships and third at the Singapore youth sailing championships. In addition, Shannon earned silver at the world youth cham- pionships, and competed at the Youth Olympic Games quali- fiers.
