ARAB TIMES, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2015 41 SPORTS Angry Van Gaal walks out of media briefing Mourinho has no formal offer from United: agent LONDON, Dec 23, (Agencies): Manchester United has made no official offer to Jose Mourinho to replace Louis van Gaal at the Premier League club, according to the Portuguese manager’s agent Jorge Mendes. “There is nothing. We don’t know what will happen in the future, but now there is no agreement. There isn’t an official pro- posal either,” British media quoted Mendes as telling Globo Esporte. Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea last week, just seven months after lifting the Premier League trophy with the Blues, following a run that left champions Chelsea one point above the relegation zone. The three-times Premier League win- ner issued a statement insisting he will not be taking a sabbatical. Pressure has been mounting on United’s Dutch manager with a six-game winless streak that saw the club bow out of the Champions League in the group stages and out of the top-four in the Premier League. Mourinho, who worked with Van Gaal during a successful spell at Barcelona, was previously linked to the Old Trafford job when former United boss Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Embattled Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal showed signs of cracking under pressure as he stormed out of a media briefing on Wednesday after becoming annoyed by questions about his future. Van Gaal has reportedly been given two games to save his job after United’s miserable six-match winless run cost his side their place in the Champions League and saw them drop out of the Premier League’s top four. Rumours have been rife this week that the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss is about to be sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho, who was dismissed by Chelsea last Thursday. Quizzed about the speculation by reporters ahead his weekly press confer- ence ahead of Saturday’s trip to Stoke, van Gaal quickly became irritated and it was less than five minutes before he decided he had had enough Refusing to take any more questions, the Dutchman walked out, saying as he passed a table of mince pies and wine that had been laid on for the media: “I wish you a merry Christmas and also maybe a happy new year when I see you. “Enjoy the wine and a mince pie. Goodbye.” Van Gaal only answered three ques- tions from the broadcast media and then refused to take any questions from the written press. It was clear the 64-year-old, who is only halfway through his three-year con- tract, was in an angry mood from the moment he took his seat in the media room at the club’s training ground in Carrington. “Has anybody in this room not a feel- ing to apologise to me? That’s what I’m wondering,” he snapped after being asked about Arsene Wenger’s claim Van Gaal’s treatment had been “disrespect- ful”. Meanwhile, Stoke City are refusing to take an out-of-sorts Manchester United for granted when the sides meet in the Premier League on Saturday, with the Red Devils more than capable of redis- covering their best form, manager Mark Hughes has said. United have failed to win any of their last six games, a woeful run which has seen Louis van Gaal’s side eliminated from the Champions League and drop out of the top four in the Premier League. “I have been asked whether this is a good time to play them but I am always wary of that because these type of clubs more often than not bounce back emphat- ically,” Hughes told reporters on Tuesday. The Gala will be shown live across the Gulf, thanks to Dubai Sports Channel, and distributed to all football passionate continents. FC Barcelona will arrive in Dubai as World champions, after winning their second trophy of the season (first in August — the European Super Cup), repeating 2011 when they won the Award after winning the FIFA Club World Cup. Then Barcelona brought the Champions League trophy to the foot of the 828 meter Burj Khalifa, where it was displayed alongside the World Cup won by Spain in South Africa and the Europa League trophy won by Gil’s Atletico Madrid. By winning in Japan Bartomeu’s team became the first to win the trophy twice since the new official formula was introduced by FIFA. This enhances Barcelona’s image as the leading football power at the start of the 21st century, being the only team to have won the European Champions League 4 times. The jury’s votes will decide the team of the year and it is hard to see that getting away from the team which has dominated football over the last 15 years, while not forget- ting the importance of Juventus, Bayern Munich and PSG, their closest rivals in the shortlist of 5. The ECA, the European Club Association, has put forward Dinipro as the fifth candidate, which has moral value and, is in itself, an acknowledgment for hav- ing reached the Europa League final although playing 500 kilome- tres from home (due to circum- stances beyond their control). In the race to the Player’s Award a lot of weight will be given to Messi’s first goal in the final against River Plate, and to the 5 goals scored by Suarez in the two games against the Asian and South American champions. Perhaps no one will manage to beat this exploit by the Uruguayan in the list of scor- ers in the Club World Cup final. The event in Dubai will also be the opportunity for a cultural exchange on the problems of foot- ball on the eve of the New Year, while waiting on a solution to the crisis at FIFA, which is expected February 26th with the new elec- tions for the presidency. Also the 2016 European Championships in France will be the focus of atten- tion with the presentation of the technical and regulatory changes being studied by UEFA. With 12 Italian compa- nies coming together to support him, Cracco will present high qual- ity products and stake the claim for the Mediterranean diet as the ‘secret of success’ for feeding and fuelling footballers. Globe Soccer’s highly popular Best Fan Award for 2015, present- ed by Kooora — the Arab world’s largest and well-regarded football site, has now closed with judging underway. Past awards were received by Alarico Rossi’s for his motivat- ing Football Slogan, and Carlo Polfranceschi for his comments and insight in to what would create a preferred Stadium experience. For the 2015 edition, fans were asked to vote for their favourite team by writing a team slogan where, once again, the winner will be flown to Dubai to join in the 2016 Gala evening’s celebrations, be seen with their heroes and be recognised for their independent, creative thinking. It is official that the award for the public’s favourite team will cer- tainly go to Barcelona, in accor- dance with the voting of thousands of fans on Kooora.com and via Globe Soccer’s social media. The Dutchman has replaced Jose Mourinho but confirmed at a press conference on Wednesday it is only likely to be a short-term role. He arrives with Chelsea struggling in 15th spot in the Premier League with sup- porters unhappy with players for their perceived failure to work for their prede- cessor. Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard bore the brunt of supporter criti- cism but Hiddink’s message to them was a clear one. “I spoke fully to the squad and, of course, we talked a bit about the past, why I’m here, the reasons why we are down,” he said. “But on the other hand I told them things happen in football and I want everyone to look in the mirror, not just for two seconds, but longer. “And see what anyone can contribute from now on to raise us up. That was what I was emphasising. Not to look back to much. “We cannot ignore what has happened in the recent past, but I asked them and told them to look in the mirror and be hypercritical and give the best for the team. They have to look forward.” He added: “There must be a great desire to play. If you don’t have that desire, please knock on my door and we’ll talk. We’ll talk briefly.” Hiddink is reprising the role he took in 2009, a season where he helped Chelsea win the FA Cup. “I shouldn’t be here, halfway into the season,” the 69-year-old said as he gets ready for his first game in charge at home to Watford on Boxing Day. “That means things are not going as well as foreseen at the beginning of the season. But anyhow I’m glad to be back. It’s a few years ago that I was here in a similar situation and I tried to help out when I was asked to do so. “I worked at that time with a lot of love for the club and to work with the players is great. “First we said let’s go to mid-May. But then we’ll see. I will see what will hap- pen. We have only spoken about until the end of the season. “No manager can guarantee three points every week, but we have to show to ourselves, the club, the players, the fans inside Chelsea and abroad, that the team have big desire to wash away the last half year and go up to the next com- ing games.” Hiddink has refused to rule out a return to the club for former player Didier Drogba who was in the stands alongside him for the 3-1 win over Sunderland last week. “I worked with him five or six years ago, and I was delighted to have such a professional in the squad,” he said. “He is a legend already in this club, but also outside this club in the world. So it’s nice for guys with these big hearts to con- nect them somehow with the club. But he is playing for Montreal, under contract. “All the big clubs, and the smaller ones, have these specific guys, figures, who can go into whatever they like — coach, ambassador, manager — but they must be given the opportunity to do so. They give the Chelsea brand a big image, worldwide. “The official process I don’t know, but I spoke openly from the bottom of the heart that such impact players can be huge for the club. How it goes on now, it’s others who have to deal with that. Not me.” Arsenal are in the middle of an injury crisis with seven players currently on the sidelines but goalkeeper Petr Cech has said he was confident the club can pull through this period. Even without Alexis Sanchez, Santi Cazorla, Francis Coquelin, Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky and Danny Welbeck, the Gunners have won four games on the trot in all competitions. Arsenal are second in the Premier League table and just two points behind leaders Leicester City, and Cech hopes the injured players can recover quickly to help the Gunners end their 11-year wait for the title. “We’ve been through the season with plenty of problems. Everything isn’t going as smoothly as we would like it to,” Cech told the BBC. “We can’t avoid injuries — sometimes you have more, sometimes you have less — but we showed that even with the unlucky injuries at the moment that we manage to win games. “I believe we will benefit from players coming back into the team, once they are fit. “The season is long and anything can happen. But if we stay where we are until March or April, then we have the chance to win the league.” Arsenal travel to take on 12th-placed Southampton in the league on Saturday. Manchester City striker Wilfried Bony has said he was disappointed to lose his starting place to a returning Sergio Aguero after manager Manuel Pellegrini opted to start the Argentine in Monday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat by Arsenal. Aguero was playing his first match in about three weeks following a heel injury and was replaced by the Ivory Coast international in the second half of the game. “He (Aguero) is coming back from injury. He hasn’t played for a few weeks,” Bony told British media. “I’m disappointed that I didn’t start but I’m not the coach. The coach does what he thinks is best for the team.” The former Swansea City forward had scored three goals in four games leading to the clash at the Emirates Stadium, although Aguero is the club’s topscorer this season with nine goals, two more than Bony in five fewer matches. Pellegrini backed his decision to start Aguero. “He worked with the squad the whole week. He needs minutes,” the for- mer Real Madrid manager said. “Normally when he comes back from an injury he needs minutes. I think that these minutes will be very important for him.” West Bromwich Albion need to be “lucky” with injuries and suspensions to maintain a fully fit squad, manager Tony Pulis has said ahead of the Premier League’s hectic festive fixture schedule. The Baggies start a set of tricky match- es with a trip to relegation-threatened Swansea City on Saturday and then host Newcastle United, who are on a three- game unbeaten run, before they come up against 11th-placed Stoke City. “We’ve got to be lucky, that’s the one thing we’re hoping, that we get some luck. We don’t get bookings and we don’t get injuries,” Pulis told reporters on Arsenal’s Theo Walcott (right), attempts a shot on goal which is blocked by Manchester City’s Nicolas Otamendi during the English Premier League soccer match between Arsenal and Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium in London, on Dec 21. (AP) US investors in talks to buy Everton LONDON, Dec 23, (Agencies): A con- sortium led by two US technology investors is negotiating to buy Everton Football Club for an estimated £200 mil- lion (272 million euros, $297 million), The Times newspaper reported on Wednesday. The report said the group had signed a preliminary agreement with owner and chairman Bill Kenwright and was check- ing the club’s accounts with the aim of completing a takeover within the next six weeks. The agreement means the investors have been given time for exclusive talks on the deal. The consortium is led by John J. Moores and Charles Noell, co-founders of venture capital firm JMI Equity. The 71-year-old Moores, who is also the founder of business software firm BMC, bought the San Diego Padres base- ball team in 1994 and sold it in 2012. Contacted by AFP, Everton’s press office could not immediately comment on the report. The report comes after fellow English Premier League side Crystal Palace last week said US investors Josh Harris and David Blitzer had bought a 36-percent stake. Everton need to overcome a tough run of fixtures around Christmas and avoid last season’s meltdown during the same period, forward Steven Naismith has said. The Toffees play five games over a hectic 15-day schedule beginning Saturday, including trips to Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur in the league, and hosting Manchester City in the League Cup semi-final. Everton failed to win a single game in all competitions last season from mid- December till the end of January. “I think we suffered a lot from that, going through Christmas and not picking up many points at all,” Naismith told the club’s website (www.evertonfc.com). “That is always going to harm your chances of finishing as high as you can. “You definitely need to be picking points up.
