After the Crisis, Europe at a Crossroads When on March 29, 2017, British Prime Minister Teresa May sent a letter to European institutions triggering negotiation for the so-called Brexit, it was clear to any observer that Europe was living a historical moment. For the first time since the six founding members agreed on forming the Coal and Steel Community in 1951, the European Union will shrink in size. The economic crisis that started in 2008 is changing the face of Europe forever. The project initiated by Jean Monnet in 1950 has gone through several crises before, but from each of them it had emerged stronger and more cohesive. Today the European Union faces unprecedented challenges. The crisis of the Eurozone, a compound of policy mistakes and institutional flaws, has stopped the process of convergence between the core and the periphery. Furthermore, persisting unemployment and stagnant incomes have fed populism and buried the very concept of solidarity on which the European Union had been built. Facing this unprecedented challenge, Europe is at a crossroads. The discussion is today polarized between on one side the proponents of a renewed push towards economic and political integration and on the other side those who call for the return of the sovereign State. The Brexit referendum and the increasingly loud opponents of the euro within the Eurozone show that as of today the European people are tempted to take the latter road. The recovery that is underway therefore needs to be exploited to put in place the reforms that Europe needs to better function in the global world.
