Students will discover what an engineer does and even more exciting, inquisitively createtheir OWN hands-on project which they get to take home most of the time. Enter a world of innovation, imagination, and learning. This semester'soffering is: Aerospace Engineering. Students are introduced to fundamental concepts of flight and aircraft design. Through focused exploration andengaging the Engineering Design Process, they will design, create, test, and improve their own solutions (projects include rockets, parachutes, andairplanes). and Software Engineering. Using laptops, LEGO® WeDo Educational kits and software, students learn how to program and operate thevarious wild animals, cars, adventure stories, and soccer-themed creations they build. Mitsi Dancing Schoolʼs company, Dance of Asian America (DAA), is the only non-profit Chinese dance company recognized by the City of Houston.DAA and Mitsi Dancing School students perform with and receive training from top nationally recognized and award-winning dancers of the ShanghaiDance Company and China Dancers Association, as well as many of Houstonʼs best dance companies. DAA and Mitsi Dancing School are the onlyChinese Dance Company and School to have our own city-wide productions at Miller Outdoor Theatre twice a year. Teacher Description

The course is a combination Ballet and Chinese dance class and will be taught entirely in Chinese Mandarin Language. 30 minutes of the course will include ballet,which covers the following but will progress at a constantly challenging and fun level for the kids: Basic feet and arm positions, Across the floor traveling steps, Barre workand center (Plie, tendu, degage, rond de jambe, battement, sautes, etc.), Stretch for flexibility. Chinese has 56 ethnic groups containing different cultures, traditions andhistory. We will teach a dance from a different ethnic group yearly so the children can take a journey to China through their dancing. They will learn of the culture,traditions and history embedded in the dance and its movements and will master the skills in each dance. The dance can be performed at the School's Chinese Newyear festival or other events. They may also join Mitsi Dancing School recital which is coming up on our 30th anniversary next year. The show is an entirely professionalproduction with Chinese dance and modern dance in the first half of the show and a full ballet (Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker, Swan Lake, etc.) in the secondhalf. More info on the Mitsi Dancing School recital will be given to students in class. NOTE: Proper attire is necessary to attend each class as follows and may bepurchased as needed due to the growth of your child: Leotard - $13, Ballet Shoes - $12, Ballet tights $10. USA Chess has been teaching children from beginners to experienced tournament chess players for over 15 years. Our staff is carefullyselected both for their ability to play (all are experienced tournament players) and to teach the game in a fun, entertaining andinteresting way.

Children of all ages and abilities will be taught the game of chess from experienced tournament players. Lessons are tailored to the abilities of the class.Beginners will be taught the basics (how the pieces move, the rules, etc. ) while more experienced players will be given problems to solve, lessons intactics, checkmates, openings, etc. Children will be split into groups by ability if more than 20 children enroll.

Students will explore the art and culture of ancient China through hands-on projects in a fun story-telling environment. The workshops bring a unique approach toteaching hands-on robotics.

Our classes encourage creativity and problem solving. We teach the latest in robotics curriculum using the familiar and popular Lego building piecesincluding motors, gears, beams, wheels, and a variety of other parts. Using the Lego educational curriculum, and working in teams, students learn howthings are designed and how they work. We incorporate remote control devises to demonstrate the actual working components of each project.Activities are inquiry based, hands on, and above all else FUN.

Houston Shaolin Kung Fu has been in business since 1998. Our Master (and owner ) has been teaching for over 20 years in the Marital Arts. He isfrom Shaolin Temple in China, 32nd generation Shaolin Monk ((Kung Fu).

Teacher Description

Lion Dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume. Basic Chinese lion dancefundamental movements are based on Traditional Chinese Kung Fu. It is an essential part of Chinese festivals/holidays and important functions such asweddings,business openings etc. Often performed by Kung fu schools at such events to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune, happiness andprosperity. Traditional lion dance performances also include the lighting of firecrackers to scare away the evil spirits. There may be an additional costfor costumes and equipment. This information will be announced at a later day and the costs of these costumes will be paid directly to the Provider.

Linda’s Music Studio is headed by Linda Singer who sang in Carnegie Hall with the Christ United Methodist Church of Sugar Land Festival Choir and isa classically-trained pianist for twenty-five years. This class will be taught by Yan Shen, the MCLIMS afterschool music coordinator. Yan Shen ispursuing her DMA in Piano Collaborative Arts at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston. She holds a Master of Music in PianoPerformance from the Wu Han Conservatory of Music, Wu Han, China and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Xing Hai Conservatory ofMusic, Guang Zhou, China. She accompanied the Gang Zhou Children Palace Choir from 2000-2010 and received the Excellent PIano Teacher Prizefrom the Guang Zhou National Piano Competition in 2008. Yan also served on the piano faculty of the Guang Zhou Conservatory of Music in Chinafrom 2005-2010. Other accomplishments include being a finalist in the American Protege Concerto Competition in 2012 and receiving the ExcellentGraduate Award from the Xing Hai Conservatory of Music in 2000.

Teacher Description

In China, it is required that children sing in a Mandarin Chinese choir. In that spirit, we would like to encourage all students at MCLIMS to register forthis class. It will be taught by Yan Shen who accompanied the Gang Zhou Children Palace choir from 2000-2010. Repertoire will include popularChinese children’s and holiday songs (including Christmas repertoire) for soprano, alto and tenor voices.

STEMology Mobile Science Lab is all about science on the move. We bring the science classroom to YOU! We provide a fun interactive scienceexperience where children can explore and expand their knowledge of science concepts through lab investigations. A wide range of state standardaligned topics will be cover throughout the semester such as Dirt-The Scoop on Soil (Explore the Properties of Soil); All about Circuits (Electricity);Measurement Olympics; Lab Equipment Scavenger Hunt; Growing Crystals (Salt Crystal Experiment); Geology Rocks! (Formation of rock/rockcycle); Gummy Bear Lab (Teaches the steps of the scientific method); Float Your Boat (Density); Stick to It (Magnetism). Students will havethe opportunity to utilize various lab equipment. During the 60 minute session, the STEMologists/students will go through lab investigation which isbroken down into 3 stages: the “Engage”, “Explore,” and "Make Sense."

Yen Laoshi (YenTi Geekie) is a native speaker from Taiwan with triple Master degrees in Music Education, Museum Education and ArtEducation from Teachers college, Columbia University in the city of New York. She is also a K-12 certified Mandarin, Music and Arteducator in the States. She has extensive training in Off, Kodaly, and Dalcroze.Yen Laoshi has been teaching and working with many world renowned organizations since 2000, including the Metropolitan Museum ofArt, the Museum of Modern Art, The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, UNESCO, Columbia University, the Cloud Gate DanceTheater, The school at the Columbia University (NYC), and many other public and private schools around the world. Yen Laoshi alsocreated the first Music Program in the MCLIMS in Fall 2013. She is passionate about creating an innovative interdisciplinary MandarinImmersion environment.

You know that problem solving,critical thinking, creativity and imagination are important for this rapidly changing world but are unsure as to how to create the organicenvironment to support and lead your children?We have established an Elite-themed curriculum that provides opportunity for children to learn Aesthetic education within a Chineseimmersion environment. Children will explore multiple themes about Fall and Winter, Chinese National Day and other Holidays. Therewill be at least two teachers in each class to create a low student to teacher ratio to ensure the best support to each student’s needs.We welcome children who are new to Chinese or have previous experiences with language and culture.

USA Chess has been teaching children from beginners to experienced tournament chess players for over 15 years. Our staff is carefullyselected both for their ability to play (all are experienced tournament players) and to teach the game in a fun, entertaining andinteresting way.

Teacher Description

Children use Kodu software (video game design software from Microsoft) to create a cool video game complete with worlds designed by the kids,Rovers, Cycles, Rockets and a variety of characters the are programmed by the kids to interact at the command of the player. Games include scoring,health and all the features of the child's favorite games.
